Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

I would like BU to do well this week.

See, this is what I'm talking about...we get into a rythm and then somebody has to bring up BU...does everything on this thread have to come back around to BU?;)

UMass is horrible. Their record looks ok but remember three of those five wins were against Lowell.

That's a plausible interpretation, but there's another inference we can draw, namely that Merrimack is very, very good. Friday night they came from behind to beat an improving Northeastern team at Matthews, and then poured it on poor Tootie's team last night. The Warriors have home-and-home with UNH next weekend, and then travel to Orono for a pair the following weekend. It would be nice to see them take a tumble, but I'm not counting on it.

Speaking of Maine-UNH, if you haven't seen the way that game ended, check out the video on the HE site. It’s from the barn-burner between UNH and Maine in Durham. If you don’t feel like watching the first 8 goals, fast forward to the 5 minute 45 second mark. The score at that point is 4 to 4 with less than a minute left in regulation. Gustav Nyquist (leading scoring in the nation last year?) gets the puck at center ice, undresses the UNH defenseman, gets around the Cats goalie (who had come WAY out), and thus has a wide open net. You’ll see what happens next.

I imagine Maine fans don't have many nice things to say about Sirman after that game-winning goal....

No doubt. But if Sirman had made the save, then Nyquist likely would be goat for the earlier play.

Links to our preview of tonight's game and a Chiasson feature are up on the blog.

Were all three of BC's goals scored by BU? I have Warsofsky definitely deflecting the first, Escobedo I'm pretty sure deflected the second, and I think Clendening deflected the winner. Can't fault Millan. Also, I was thinking that it was great that BU was staying out of the box and then, of course, a stupid penalty by Ruikka.

He might have gotten away with what looked like a trip at first...his stick was held for a bit, then it looks like he gets his stick in the other guy's skates, maybe the ref lets it go if it stops there...then he cross-checks the guy on his way to the ice and gets the penalty...that was not a smart move.

I don't think there was any carryover from the third, going to OT should negate any carryover makeup calls...I think this was just a dumb move out in the open.

Ruikka had an ok game save that huge penalty and the weak touch pass during the PP that cost us a sustained possession and risked a break the other way. (on another thread someone asked why he was on the team)

BU made a lot of bad passes in their own end, similar to the Ruikka pass, soft touch passes that would look fine if the players were in synch, instead looked like they left more than one puck out in no man's land as the intended recipient either wasn't ready or couldn't adjust to the pass.

2 additional thoughts: If BC is indeed the best team in the country, then I feel much better about our chances with the rest of the country and, the fifth time's a charm...watch out BC in the HE playoffs!! Unless we lose, and then watch out in the NCAA's...1 outta six ain't bad!!

Late in the 3rd period (about 10 seconds to go?), a BU player made a soft dump in pass as he was leaving the ice that was easily picked off by BC at their own blueline. BC turned it into a scoring opportunity at the buzzer. Does anyone know who the BU player making the soft pass was?

I don't think the rest of the country is too concerned at the moment. BU has a lot of games to win to even think about the NCAA Tournament.

You got BC's B- game or somewhere around there. Don't get too excited.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if BU did some damage down the road. UNH and BC are the only two teams that are clearly better than BU. And I could see BC losing to BU down the road in the Garden again, especially if BC's on a huge winning streak going into that game.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Seeing how BU beat UNH twice and as of right now is the only team in HE to have beaten them...

But ya, I'd say UNH is still better. I do think Merrimack is slightly better than BU.

UNH probably is a better team than us, but having defeated them twice, it doesn't make a lot of sense to call them clearly better. Mack may have an edge on us, though we did get them twice on the road, and the total goal differential in the series was one goal. One game on a neutral site, probably a toss up.

Yes, all three goals went off BU guys. A stupid penalty by Ruikka? You're joking, right? That call was horrendous.

Totally agree. While BU has no one to blame but themselves for squandering multiple opportunities in the 3rd, that cross-check call against Ruikka was absurd. Its kind of difficult to perform a cross-check when you have one hand on a stick that's being held by your opponent.
