Let me just be the first to say... WOW!

I think Parker is losing it. Actually, I think he lost it a long time ago.

On one hand I feel bad for this kid. Very similar blindside hit that Parker drilled Saponari with (he was also shocked at the expulsion). On the other hand, this is what happens when you go to play for a coach that has been showing signs of dementia for the last decade.

While I'm sure the truth about the whole story is somewhere in the middle of Parker's story and Glass' story, this whole episode, combined with the Saponaris' dismissal, doesn't bode well for a good image of the program. I worry what recruits will think when they see that this is the 3rd dismissal for attitude issues. :(

I doubt York would do the negative recruiting bit (luckily for Parker) but the other coaches around the country, especially the big boys out there nationally... you can bet this will be printed out multiple times in hockey offices around the country. Not good for BU at all.

There are just so many things that jump out at you... and I'm not trying to pile on but do find this very interesting when you consider cumulative things from the last few years.

- Is optional really optional to Parker?
- NCAA rules... Glass knows the rules, obviously... is he implying that BU was not right to hold that practice or weightlifting session? Don't know but it raised an eyebrow after I read this a 2nd time around.
- The seriousness of academics at BU - traditionally a very low number of guys on the HE All-Academic team lately... throw in Chris Bourque and Glass questioning whether academics are important to Parker... hmmm.
- Cleaning out a kid's locker with no warning.
- Parker ignoring the kid and his dad for a few weeks and then when he sees the kid he says "where the F have you been?" and tells him to leave.
- Not shaking hands or making eye contact with the Glasses.
- "Quite clear that Parker wasn’t even sure of the details himself" and "he definitely didn’t care what Andrew had to say."
- "irrational monologue from Parker"

Lastly, you have to wonder why he is kicking kids off the team for missing meetings and bad attitudes but did not kick John Sabo off the team when he almost murdered a kid outside of The Avenue. I think this was mentioned when Saponari was kicked off the team but you have to ask this even more so now.

Despite the decline over the decade+ and general buffoonery from Parker during this timeframe, I'm putting this moment down as officially the beginning of the end for Parker.

Yep. Not good. Not good at all. (Regardless of where the "truth" lies. Simply that this story is out there.)

I would encourage people to keep that in mind. Both Vinny last year and Glass this year have nothing to lose by telling their side, whereas Parker made it clear in both instances that he has no intention of getting into a war of words. Parker has his reasons, and I'm sure neither dismissal was an autonomous, off-the-cuff decision. Obviously it might turn off some recruits like you mentioned, but I'm sure Parker took that into account before making his decision.

Yes.

I didn't get that impression. I don't think it's much of a secret that pretty much every team does this.

- Cleaning out a kid's locker with no warning.
- Parker ignoring the kid and his dad for a few weeks and then when he sees the kid he says "where the F have you been?" and tells him to leave.
- Not shaking hands or making eye contact with the Glasses.

These are the things that stuck out to me. Definitely odd to say the least.

If that's all true, that's pretty bush league. I don't see too much of a connection between Saponari and Glass, the reasons for Saponari seemed a bit more clear, specifically the bike ride thing, and there was evidence that his attitude was a cancer on the team, which didn't seem to be the case here.

This really doesn't look good for the program, and you don't want that kind of thing going on and in the ears of recruits. I don't know if Glass has any recourse through the university, though clearly he's not getting back on the team, but if that's what happened, that's extremely improper treatment from Parker. At least talk to the kid and be upfront about what happened and give him the respect to respond.

While it doesn't seem that Glass made anything up, his explanation of missing/being late to those meetings left a bit to be desired. If he was in the training room being worked on by the training staff, assuming he arrived there when he was supposed to, you'd think the training staff would tell Parker the kid was late because he was receiving treatment, and that would be more than a legitimate reason to be late. That's the only part where I thought there could be more to the story.

Thanks FL for putting this together, good stuff.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

I hope every potential BU recruit reads this Andrew Glass article. I would never let my kid play for a lunatic whack job like Jack Parker if he had the chance to. Not that Glass had a strong professional hockey future, but he basically ruined this kid for reasons that appear to be no better than "the scattered mind droppings of an old man". Too bad for Glass. He clearly deserved better than this.

agree, good job FL and with your position there and being around Parker, kudos for putting the interview out there in the first place

And it does not appear he notified anyone when he could not attend the workout due to studying (also the team was not in NY for the majority of the weekend) and a no call, no show is still a no call, no show even if the person in question has a valid reason for not appearing. That said Glass's case seems much more valid than Vinny's "I was told if you are late to any of these bike rides I'd be kicked off, and I was only late for 2 and now I'm SHOCKED to be kicked off the team." I do hope Parker's side is significantly different enough that it could dispel any future recruits concerns if this is called into question.

This will go great with my story. Gotta call the script writer back.

Ya know, this could make a half decent movie. A hot tempered coach with a penchant for crazy antics slips into senility halfway through the season without anybody noticing. It starts out simple like forgetting that he just made a line change and sending the next guys in on short rest. It evolves into what broadcasters assume is an uncanny ability to brush off recent defeats and ignore 3rd period leads. It ends with a pathetic irate old man screaming from the bench and throwing clipboards and water bottles. It'd be a real tear jerker. Oscar material for sure.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

As ewe points out, there are usually 3 sides to every story.

The kid's story proves nothing and should be assumed is not completely accurate, intentionally or otherwise.

Are there bosses/coaches out there that either are crazy or go off the deep end on one issue? Absolutely. (Leach, Knight, O'Leary, Gundy, Price, Haywood...to name a few) So, it is possible that Parker is just totally off his rocker and this kid's story is exactly accurate. It is also quite possible that the kid's story has been honed, possibly by an attorney, to distract from the fact that he was asked to leave the team, which is embarrasing for him and his family.

I'll say that I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Gilroy was late for something in his career, or name any other player that was clearly committed to the team, yet it wasn't a federal offense...and I wouldn't be surprised if general attitude and respect are integral to this issue. A player could be late for a few reasons just like an employee could be late or any of us are/were late getting home when we were teens or as adults. We all know that the actual reason, the veracity of the story given, the amount of regret expressed, the effort made to be on time and our previous track record are major factors in whether mom/dad/boss/spouse say "hey, I understand" or "where the **** have you been?".

As for the survey they did previously...the "gee I was just being a positive guy" sounds a little convenient, but, let's say that is accurate. Perhaps Parker is a good judge if the player ranked other people fairly/accurately and if the player has lived up to his optimism through the summer, fall and season to date. A guy striving for the top and demonstrating that on a daily basis might be forgiven for an inaccurate assessment of himself and his teammates. A guy saying he is better than other guys, not putting in the work and then being cavalier about getting to meetings...maybe the coach says "I've had enough of you blowing smoke".

If the timeline of communication is accurate, then Parker should have gotten back to the player sooner. But, it is his job to run the team not play HR executive for one player that can't seem to get to meetings on time and there is no rule that says he has to...in a corporation you might expect better response from a manager but I wouldn't assume that carries over to a college sports team.

A good question from the interviewer would have been "did you or your dad say anything, email anything, voicemail anything to Parker or others that could have come to Parker's attention?" Often a manager is aware of an employees response to an issue even if it isn't face to face, and coworkers or teammates often will relay stuff up the ladder. Maybe Parker asked the assistant coaches or captains if Glass appeared to be sorry and taking this seriously. Maybe he asked the trainer if Glass was really late for the reason he said...there are so many possibilities...most of which are far more likely than the coach suddenly went crazy (although that could still be the case).

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

As ewe points out, there are usually 3 sides to every story.

I believe this was also the name to Boston band Extreme's 3rd album. And a pretty good one at that (and very underrated band and guitarist ... Nuno Bettencourt).

Anyway, you have to wonder why Parker is asking the question if he isn't going to like the answer. Was there a right and a wrong answer? Clearly there was a wrong answer. Was there a right one? Maybe Glass says "I stink, I'm the worst forward on the team..." and Parker says, "you have no confidence and it's a big part of the game, get your head out of your butt or you're going to get kicked off the team..."

Was it one of Parker's classic Jedi mind tricks to get these kids thinking about how much improvement they have to make in the offseason? If so, why not just give the kid an assessment? I would imagine Glass would be given an assessment from Washington scouts since he is drafted as well. I just get a feeling that the answer to his question from the summer questionaire was thrown out there as a reason for his dismissal long after the fact because Parker was just being a crazy man and needed some more "reasons" to fall back on. It just doesn't make sense to cite something like that months after the answer occurred and seems like they never spoke of it once until that point.

And lastly, is Glass' contention that he tested near the top of the team in on-ice and off-ice conditioning true of false? Because if it true, the kid clearly was committed to working hard; conditioning isn't something God just gives you as a gift at birth.

Just throwing some things out there. There's a lot of ins and outs and what have you here....

I like how the BC folks come in to bash Parker and then we get more information. Not so fast, guys.
