Re: Boston University: 2010-11 part I - "so...you're saying i get a calendar??"

Have any of you season ticket holders had any luck selling tickets on the Ticket Exchange? There are a few home games I can't make so I put some tickets for sale, but I'm not sure if anything will actually happen with them...

Lots of good point totals, but this guy knew how to put it in the net better than all of them.

Amonte: 25-33-58

it did help playing with two other future NHLers in McEachern and Joe Sacco, but Amonte had better numbers than both of them that year and they weren't freshmen. Two things stuck out for me that year:

- consistency - had those 25 goals with no hat tricks and if memory serves, very few two goal games.

- 9 game winning goals.

- and oh yeah, owning the #1 Spartans on a regular basis :D

Amonte elevated the skill level on the team and the excitement around that team more than any other freshman since I've been following the team (1987).

buoldtimer, rogie - who would you put up there? Silk (30 goals)? Rick Meagher?

I agree with boston22 - let's keep our expectations in check for Coyle. He has successfully painted a target on his back after one exhibition game.

Haven't used it, but you could always post here or in the Tickets Forum.

I think they will be. It still amazes me that a few of those players decided to come to BU. It's not like Durocher is the most well known coach out there, and the program is only, what? 4 years old?

Program is in its sixth season. Durocher is an extremely hard-working and throrough coach both behind the bench and in recruiting efforts--which the HE title and monster recruit class bear out. This article sheds some light on the Poulin recruitment and how that success may leverage more top-tier recruits. http://beyondthedashersblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/hockey-east-preseason-feature-marie.html

It pretty much seems to work for BC games and big OOC games.

Yup, that was the point of my original post -- which was a reminder to myself, as much as for anyone else. Last year I saw Chiasson pot two goals to open the season (seemingly the one bright spot in an otherwise dismal night at the Mullins Center). He managed to get 5 more the rest of the season. Number 9 is obviously talented and may make a big jump this year, but it's hard to make the transition to D-1 hockey even if you have the pedigree.

.

Silk had 35 goals in 34 games as a freshman in 76-77, playing with Rick Meagher (34 goals) and Mike Eruzione (23 goals) on arguably the best line in college hockey that season. With O’Callahan and Lamby on defense, it was a dominant PP unit. Sean, do you have PP stats?

Meagher scored 19 (40 points) as a freshman, but that team (190 goals in 31 games) was loaded up front (T.Meagher, Burlington, Marzo, Robbins, Buckton, Eruzione), so he wasn’t called upon to shoulder the scoring burden. 73-74 team should’ve been in the NCAA title game. Next to the 1991 title game loss, the ’74 semi-final loss to Minnesota (SHG in final seconds) was one of the hardest to take.

One other name to add. Paul O’Neill, a tall, lanky center from Charletown (IIRC) with Bonino-like hands. He wasn’t a freshman because there wasn’t freshman eligibility in 72-73, but he was a first year varsity player and put up 35 goals in 28 games. He left school after that season and played 13 years in the minors and Europe, just 6 NHL games.

This.

I definitely do expect more from Coyle this year than Chiasson last year, though. A lot of people are throwing around the Colin Wilson comparison, and my reactions is always, "well, kinda." Physically, he and Wilson are very similar. As athletes, their combinations of size and athleticism are incredibly rare, and markedly similar.

After that, though, the comp gets fuzzy, or at least warrants a "To Be Determined" tag. Wilson's physical tools were obviously outstanding, but what really made him a college stud was his ice awareness. Some of the passes he made –– and I may be remembering him more sophomore year than freshman year –– were just bewildering.

I'm not saying Coyle does or does not have that sense, I just didn't see quite that in his first game. What I did see were possibly the best set of hands –– especially when it comes to shooting –– that I've seen in my four years at BU. That goal he roofed on the one-timer from Connolly , there are guys in the NHL who can't get a puck up off the ice that quickly in that situation.

This might sound strange, but if I had to compare Coyle to any Terrier I've seen (so over the last four years), I think it might actually be a slightly more physically gifted version of Vinny Saponari, but with magnificent hands. Strong defensively, great in the corners, and with a knack for finding open space near the net.

Sounds a little like that Drury fellow....

Obviously didn't see him play but I would be hard-pressed to imagine he has better hands, especially in the shooting sense that you're framing this in, than Bonino.

You're right, although based on what I saw last Saturday, I'd say he might be in the same ball park.

Probably still too early to say for sure, but he looked pretty darn close. He was no more than two feet away from the goalie and somehow managed to rifle it over his shoulder while catching the pass and shooting all in one motion, in traffic.

Perhaps we should see how he fares against the varsity (BC, UNH, Maine) than against the Varsity Blues.

Yup. Doesn't mean it isn't a fun discussion, though.

Yup, Paul "Ensign" O'Neill from Charlestown (MC grad). Very fluid skater with great hands. A couple of his cousins also from Charlestown had pretty fair freshman seasons at BU:
Mike Fidler (MC) 24 goals, 24 assists in 31 games. Stayed for 2 years at BU then turned pro. Younger brother Mark (Matignon) was even more productive, 30 goals and 35 assists in 31 games.

When I was looking for high-point freshmen, I stopped in the mid-90s as scoring dipped across the board much of the time since (though may be on a modest upswing now), so it's hard to make comparisons across eras.

On this damp and dismal day, waiting for the puck to drop, I looked at BU team scoring in more recent years. The 2008-09 season is just ridiculous statistically, so there may be more to learn from other years. To state the obvious, goal-tending trumps everything else. The 2006-7 team only scored at 2.54 clip, but had a 20-10-9 record thanks to a 2.00 gaa. The high goal-getters that year were MacArthur with 16 and Higgins with 13.

Even when the team has scored better (by today's standards), it really has been more a matter of depth than having one or two players carry all the load. In 2007-8 the team averaged 3.38 goals per game, with MacArthur and Ewing getting 21 and 17 respectively. More impressive, in the 2005-6 team averaged 3.5 goals with Roche (pardon me) and Ewing scoring 17 and 16, which spelled a 26-10-4 season, including the HE championship

So the early-season optimist in me says we don't have to depend Coyle and Nietro to put up spectacular numbers. Instead, it's reasonable to expect that Chiasson (7), Megan (5), and Trivino (4) can get well up into double digits. As to goal tending, however, . . .?

I'll tell him.....

"hey bomber jr! No more crappy pizza! And don't let your dad turn you onto a Blackhawks fan!"

There ya go. :)

There is no such thing as "crappy" pizza to a 6 year-old.

Blackhawk fan? fine (at least they win once every 30 or 40 odd years.) If he becomes a Cubs fan you can turn me into DSS.
