Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

Does agganis ever sell student section tickets for break games? I think it would make sense if Cornell was ever over break... 107 and 109 would probably be almost completely empty... sigh, alright I admit it 108 would probably be vacant too, why not try to sell those tickets?

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

Hm... I guess the argument that Cornell/BU wouldn't sell out at Agganis is pretty sound if the game is over turkey weekend. I wonder what would happen to attendance, especially from the Cornell crowd, if this was marketed as "red hot hockey" instead of just another ooc game at agganis. Seems to me there's a possibility that the hype/media coming up to any future meeting at agganis (especially after the two renewal-of-rivalry games at MSG) would be bound to draw more people than those 2001 games.

As for lynah it sounds awesome, but it's hard to believe we would ever agree to a game at lynah without a game at agganis so if we want lynah we're probably going to have to sacrifice that maybe-poor home crowd in Boston.

judging by their alumni support and fans in general Cornell would stand to make a lot of money from a special vs BU event at lynah, I'm guessing they could apply special ticket prices for the game and still easily sellout.
The games at MSG were intended to bring college hockey to an area that doesn't often see it, and to engage two large alumni populations with the most popular sport the schools have to offer. Games at Agganis and Lynah are immediately "just another game".

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

you have to go back to prehistoric times to 1988 with the boston garden he/ecac classic game on Dec10th, then the Syracuse Xmas tourney game on Dec29th. (that would have been an interesting trip... ;) )

1988 at Boston Garden. Rival Revival. *shudder* Talk about a disaster. 2,500 fans at the Garden and BU lost 7-2 (if I'm remembering correctly. I've been known to mis-remember.)

I'm a little bummed that I've missed the two most exciting games of the year. (the last two!) but hoping this is a launching pad to better play. A 3-point weekend would be nice.

BU Hockey: MSG Hangover?

EDIT TO ADD: Kennedy, I just noticed you are living in Chicago. You living in the city? If so, where? Oh, and if you see Jay Cutler on the street, punch him in the mouth for me. Thanks.

Yeah, I wonder how special the event would be if you were playing it in someone's home arena every few years. Seems to me the novelty is playing in NYC, with two large alumni bases nearby. Even in the next few years people who haven't had a chance to attend yet, plus the ones who come back for the experience, ought to keep it a sell out. There's such as thing as too much of a good thing however, and for that reason I'd ease off on some rotation between the MSG, the TDG, and the two home arenas. I know for BU fans we're generally playing 3 games at the Garden/Fleet/TD anyway (2 Beanpot nights, at least once in HE tourney most years) so its hardly a new experience to play there.

I really don't think playing at on campus arenas would detract from the spectacle or attendance of MSG, as long as they aren't doing a on campus game and MSG in the same year, which no one has yet advocated for. The type of fans that would be willing to make the 5+ hour drive to Ithaca would not skip MSG because they had already seen the teams play recently, so then on a 4 year rotation the more casual fans wouldn't get overexposed with Cornell to the point that they would skip MSG. And I don't think anyone would complain if BU hosted Cornell on Reunion/Alumni/Homecoming/Whatever-you want-to-call-it Weekend every 4 years, with the Michigans of the world scattered in for the 3 years in between Cornell visits.

I agree a game at TD would be a bust, because while MSG may not be exactly in neutral territory it is nowhere near as close to Cornell as TD is to BU, not to mention that Cornell filled 65% of MSG and I doubt BU could do the same with TD, and finally TD is not nearly as special a venue for college hockey to be played at.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

Totally agree with avoiding TDG. That would be a terrible idea, and would almost certainly come nowhere close to selling out.

Living up in Lincoln Park/Lakeview. And you'd be more likely to persuade me to pop Ron Turner or Jerry Angelo in the mouth, only because of the size discrepancy between myself and Jay. It's been adorable to watch how it took until this week for so many Bears fans to realize this was a terrible football team.

TBA, I hope you were able to wrap up that conversation with my uncle fairly quickly, my phone conversation with him last week last about 45 minutes longer than I expected. Wholly unsurprising that he'd chat up someone in the MSG ticket line.

I realized it a few weeks ago, but going into the season, I was fooled to believe that Cutler was enough (even though they suck/are inexperienced at receiver) and that the defense wasn't over-rated. (They are. Big time.) Lovie and Turner have to go. Cutler needs a punch in the mouth. Hey, at least the Blackhawks are rolling. :)

Lincoln Park is a nice area. Have a Gino's pizza with sausage, peppers, and mushrooms for me. /end Chicago talk hijack of this thread.

I like the every other year at MSG approach. If it wanes after a few more times then I'd try to fix it but right now it looks like a real success.

When my wife asked why they don't do it every year I told her interest wouldn't be high enough...I asked her if she thought we'd go every year and she looked at me like I was insane and said "yeah, I do think we'd be here every year". Apparently she thinks we are too sports focused.

I then drove all day to see Steelers-Ravens game in Baltimore...maybe she is right.

Ideas for future years:
  1. Official BU hotel, group discount, party in the bar etc (like a bowl game).
  2. Group buying power for Broadway shows on Friday night.
  3. Don't charge $30 for hotdogs before the game or offer a discount for kids
  4. Get the coaches/captains on Today show
  5. Skills competition at Rockefeller Center - couple players from each school
  6. Scholarship fund or charity tie in with game
  7. BU party/cruise on Hudson

We go to NYC several times a year, those of us more familiar should have done a travel guide for less frequent visitors - here is to remembering two years from now.

I'd prefer every three years. This was an expensive weekend. And it was $20, not $30. :) I think they could try for the discount on the hotel but I don't think they could get in Thanksgiving weekend. Possible, but I would bet against it. I love the idea of the skills competition at Rockefeller Center but given that it's outside and you don't know what the weather is like, you run the risk of injury. Still though, I like that train of thought.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

I'm not sure a skills competition with just two teams would be all that exciting. Has there ever been any discussion about holding some sort of multi-team gig at MSG? Might be cool to get a two-day tournament at MSG, certainly would be good for college hockey. Maybe nab another HE and another ECAC team and play two Friday, one Saturday? Too much to ask? Probably. But with the right teams, I think it could be a cool weekend.

Regardless, I like some of the ideas pirate. It'd at least be cool to get an "official" team hotel and try to get a bar or something as an official postgame meeting place.

It will never happen on Thanksgiving weekend at MSG. I'm pretty sure the pre-season NIT for NCAA hoops is always there the Wednesday and Friday of Thanksgiving week. I can't imagine college hockey would ever bump that.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

Kennedy is right - this would not do well on campus. The novelty is MSG, and two big NY based alumni.

Don't fix what ain't broken. Two very successful games in three years - change nothing.

Good call. Forgot about the NIT.

yeah, Duke - UConn was letting out as we went to a show in the theater at MSG Friday night. I guess that is where they do the draft...looks bigger in person.

You can see some promise amongst the mistakes and missed opportunities...I wouldn't be shocked to see this team go on a post-Beanpot run.

If it wasn't for last year, that would just be normal...start out poorly, turn it on late and make it interesting.

We were in line together for a while. I thought the game started at 7. He was nice and god knows I can't complain about how much someone talks. :D

He said I reminded him of you. LOL.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

I just did the math:

We have 5 points through 9 HE games. We need around 30 points to get the 4th slot, which means 12-7-1 over the remaining games.

And if we don't finish the regular season in the top 4 in HE, we will need to win the tournament to go to the NCAAs.

Discuss.

Boston is lovely in April. Guess the boys will find that out as well.

I don't think it's THAT dire, yet. Honestly, if they can right the ship, 12-7-1 is not an unreachable goal. 19-0-1, yes. But BU teams have a habit of turning it on down the stretch, and 12-7-1 is not impossible. The team has talent, it just needs to put the talent and effort together to win.
