Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

Myself, my initial impressions were that it is geared more towards audience that has been following this program for 20-30+ years than someone like myself who has only been exposed to this program for 5-6 years. I couldn't appreciate the video as much as perhaps others among us who watched the DVD since anything prior to the 2004-05 season, I have no knowledge of... and the majority of the DVD was pre-2004-05. It was interesting to watch, and I learned a lot about both programs, but I was hoping for a lot more "BU and BC are two of the best programs today" than actually appeared on the DVD.

Your logic is bass ackward here. If you thought most of it included material pre 2004, wouldn't that make you the target audience? You know, if you look at it as a learning/history excercise. Why would you prefer something that just goes over stuff you lived/know?

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

did you buy it recently? I think the book is out of print, hence the high price on Amazon. If it's still at the store I'd stop in and get it next time I'm there.

It's out of print. Checked with Barnes & Noble today. To the Christmas list it is.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

About a year ago when doing a search for Steve Thornton winning the '95 team MVP, I found this link to most of of the pages in Bernie's History of BU Hockey. Only the chapter about the Kelley years is missing.

Some good news. Popko returned to practice and is expected to suit up this weekend. I'd like to see him back with Glass and Pereira, and Megan on LW with Connolly and Saponari.

I recall Parker saying last year saying last year that he preferred to have Connolly playing LW rather than center a line. Of course, that could have been because he was not good on faceoffs last season (only won 41.7%). Although a small sample size, he's off to a better start this season, so we may just see him stick with those linemates. Also, with Bonino out, Connolly is the most logical choice for the second center on PK (after Popko) since he would normally be out there in those situations anyway.

is Bernie on this board? He should work on getting that back in print, though I imagine it would be difficult (the entire audience for that book is probably posting on this web site)

No, but he's easy to find at The Bar Formerly Known As T's after every game.

Not too much to add to what has already been said but ...

- Leaving out the fan perspective in this DVD is not just a simple oversight. One of the biggest reasons the rivalry is so intense is the fans. Heck, a lot of the players are friends from peewees on up [weren't Lawrence and Gerbe linemates on the U-18 team?] and don't really hate each other at all. So leaving out that angle is a big, gaping hole.

- While we're talking about glaring omissions, they were missing some history too. To cite a couple of examples: How about the stretch in the 80's when BC was undefeated against BU in the regular season but BU was undefeated against BC in the postseason? How about the 78' Blizzard Beanpot final?

- They showed footage but often didn't say when it was from.

- They could have easily found some better quotes from BU like BU-Grad's sig or Parker's infamous "BC fans wear t-shirts, our fans wear jerseys" line.

Bottom line: It wasn't bad but if you only have $10 budgeted to spend on a DVD, spend it on CandyCanes99's classic, not this. CC99 has better music too.

I watched this from a different perspective since I'm less versed on the history of BU-BC than some here so I'm not going to comment on specific footage they should or shouldn't have put in. Upon second view I paid more attention to the structure of the film and how they put together the story. From that end, I thought they did a very poor job. The film was discombobulated and didn't really have a flow to it. They'd talk about coaching for a few minutes then turn to some Beanpot talk. There was absolutely no chronology to it as it would jump all over the place both in the interviews they showed and the clips. One of the most important things in making a documentary is capturing the story your telling and revealing it as you go along. This really didn't happen here, the story jumped all over the place and sometimes scenes and clips didn't connect to one another. My guess is they had a lot of ideas they wanted to show here but either couldn't find a way to intertwine them or simply didn't intertwine them. Either way, it made for a disjointed film that was difficult to follow at times and left me wondering why a transition occurred and what the connection was.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed it and some of the stories were really great and it still made me check my calendar to see how long it is until the first weekend in December.

Good to see those COM skills are getting a workout. :D

As long as we're ranting :D I freakin' hate the podcast intro. That intro is about 14 seconds long, and there are at least 14 different shots crammed in there. It's hockey! World's fastest game and all that. You don't have to sex it up, you A.D.D.-Michael Bay wannbes! Let me watch them do their thing! You don't need camera tricks to make hockey look great. In fact, you've made it so we can't tell WHAT the bleep's going on. /end rant

So, off topic, but now that I've graduated and am living in CT (though I still have been driving up to Boston for games... my car hates me) I decided to go to some of the college hockey games in the area.

I started with Sacred Heart, and it made me realize just how lucky we are to be BU fans, even if we complain about Agganis. Their rink is about half the size of Merrimack's, and having played an away game there this weekend on the adult team I play on, I can attest that the locker rooms that the visiting team has to dress in suck (not even a bathroom...).

So yeah, just a bit of "even if we are 1-2-0 on the season and can't get a decent hot dog, it's still better to be a BU fan" cheer here. ;-)

Did you guys know that Bemidji State won the National Championship last year? They did according to Sports Illustrated.

Check out the Scorecard story on Alabama Huntsville in this week's issue. Glad to see their editors are working hard over there.

BU Hockey: Beavered

Slurpees, nice analysis. I was thinking the same thing as I was watching. Not only did the jumping around/no thru line bug me, but the footage of non BU-BC games when talking about BU-BC confused me and seemed sloppy. It needed chapters and characters. The fans are a key character.

That's ok, I'm willing to cede them an incorrect mention in a SI issue (holy cr@p! SI still exists in actual magazine form?).

I was just thinking about Bemidji and Air Force, etc. the other day and how remarkable their runs through late March were.

What a great tournament that was.... :D

Also, Puck Swami's thread on Bands got me thinking, is our band financially ok? Do they need donations? Just curious as I've never heard them ask for anything...

If our band played Tom Jones' 'help yourself', I'd donate $10/game :)

I agree with the lack of flow having now seen it, certainly jumped around chronologically and went over events multiple times from different perspectives. Now, I think recruiting stuff is interesting, but in a video that is supposed to be devoted to the rivalry between the two schools, too much time is spent on this as well as historical exposition of the schools coming to fruition rather than any kind of intertwining as would apply to the rivalry. I hope that the TV cut removes most of that.

And as mentioned before, the fan angle is completely 100% necessary to show this as a rivalry given the way players already know each other, etc. One of the early descriptions said that these rivals are like roommates or brothers. Maybe to the players sometimes, but not to the fans. No sir. That perspective needed to be in here, and to me is much more vital than the recruiting tales (although the Kelleher story was very cool and did stress the rivalry well).

How many fans are making the trek up to Lowell tomorrow? A buddy of mine goes to UML and got me tix, so I'll be going with him and hopefully gloating over him. Can I expect a decent BU fan section at Tsongas?

when we tried to buy tickets through agganis they said they were sold out. now it's agganis box office people, some of whom couldn't tell who what BU's mascot is.

There will be tickets available at the Tsongas Box Office. It will be a big crowd but I doubt it will be a sellout.

i picture of stevef holding up a "where's BU" sign while they played in the championship game in milwaukee would have been perfect :D or profromdover in his "sucks to BU" would have worked, though not as well (since i believe he bought that at cornell).
