Boston College Women's Hockey '10: Thunstromian Dominance

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey '10: Thunstromian Dominance

I don't know. I'm not really a fan of these types of thought experiments. I don't think anyone can answer these hypothetical questions with certainty.

What I can do, is watch the games that actually do happen and react to them. And what I see: a continued lack of success w/ passing out of the defensive zone, a lack of a strong, consistent strategy to get it into the offensive zone (outside of "wait for Thunstrom to streak past the red line and look for a home run pass"), no-look passes into a general direction instead of on to a teammate's stick, defensive breakdowns leaving opposing players open, bad penalties at bad times... the list goes on.

I don't think anyone could fairly watch this team and say "this is the best they are capable of." It would be doing an incredible disservice to the talented players on this team to say they're only good enough to win 5 out of 26 games played in the season.

I'm not necessarily saying it's coaching - I'm not at practice or in the locker room, who knows what might be going on.

I *do* know that I see troubling signs of a chronically underachieving team.

I agree 100% with your last sentence!

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey '10: Thunstromian Dominance

Great article! Good to hear from some graduated BC legends!

I agree with an earlier poster who said this team misses some of the leadership it had. Players like Taverna, Spillane, and Stuart were the bedrock of this program.

So, Beanpot Tuesday.

Any chance BC repeats the 2007 and 2009 heroics against Harvard?

Well, a Republican is sitting in Ted Kennedy's seat, so I suppose anything is possible.

Hate to sound like a Terrier... but...

If we win the Beanpot, this season will have been a resounding success.

There, I said it.

"Resounding"? Suppose you win the Beanpot, finish 5th or 6th and lose your HEA quarter. I'd say you had a successful Beanpot amidst a mostly lackluster season. Five years ago, maybe, but at this point, your program should expect better. A program coming off an NCAA spot has to make it at least as far as the conference semis to call the season any kind of success.

He's referring to how BU men's fans obsess over the Beanpot, even if the team underachieves in the conference and/or ncaa playoffs. BU keeps winning the Beanpot, and BC fans make hundreds of posts about how they don't care about the Beanpot because they'd rather win in April.

TTT seems to be conceding the season to a BU level measure of success.

"Should" is different from "do."

Winning at Harvard would be an outstanding coup for this team even if they were firing on all cylinders. Let's see what happens. They seem to get up for these games.

I'd just like to correct you here - we care about the Beanpot. But yes, we would rather win in April. If we don't win the Beanpot, we shrug it off because we have bigger things ahead. But if we win it, then great. Now on to the next piece of hardware.

If a team is good enough to win @Harvard, and then win in the Beanpot final, then they owe it to themselves to go into the HEA tourney believing that they can win it and get back to the NCAAs. I'm guessing that would be their goal, even if Grant is already satisfied and turns his attention to printing "Beanpot Champs" T-shirts.

This season has been a disaster. The fact of the matter is, if we can escape with any form of hardware, I'll be happy.

We've won 5 games this year. Five. Cinco. Cinque.

Look, I'm all for the "let's get it together and WIN everyone - We can DO IT!" attitude. It's great. But let's be realistic. If we win the Beanpot, I'll be pumped like you wouldn't believe.

Oh yeah, I forgot....isn't this the same fella that in an apparent attempt at humor in his acceptance comments declared to the national TV audience that both daughters were available...

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey '10: Thunstromian Dominance

Not sure where you heard that, but that's not what he said at all:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/20/us/politics/20text-brown.html?pagewanted=1

he did make a comment about them being available, but it was spur of the moment and possibly from nervousness. I think people read a lot more into it than necessary.

Personally I thought he gave a great speech and was pretty down to earth.

Anybody want some tea?

Are we talking basic Lipton or Salada, or are we talking something more full bodied like Earl Grey or Darjeeling? A cup of Earl Grey sounds good right about now!

any of the above sounds good. Home brewed sweet tea is also a great option, regardless of the weather. Then there is always a Long Island Ice Tea for something with a little kick. Shoot, we could have some tea at a party :D
