I was wondering about this as well. Someone on Eagle Action said he has already commited to BC, but I haven't seen anything on it elsewhere. Maybe "The Kid" is someone to ask. He seems to have some good insight.

Sullivan did commit to BC and is coming next year. Jeke is also coming but is a walk-on. Jerry loading up on D for next year! Matheson, Piazza, Sullivan, Jeke, Doherty all D coming in next year.

With the exception of Piazza - he is for 2013. Is it safe to assume that as a walk on, Jeke will still get the same opportunity to play than someone who is on scholarship?

I believe Piazza is recovered from the concussion and is back on track for 2012.

Yale screwed the pooch on this kid big time. A local kid who would put fannies in the seats and a heck of a player from what I hear. I have to look at our D-Men coming in and try to figure this one out.

If Sullivan is in fact coming next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Piazza (even if he's been cleared to play) pushed back to 2013 as he pretty much missed the entire year and that probably isn't the way you want to transition into HE as an 18 year old freshman. Plus, they already will have 8 D-men on the roster and find it hard to believe that they would carry 9.

Agreed, I wouldn't be shocked for York to tell him to take an extra year to make sure he's fully recovered & to get his legs back.

You are probably right, but how big of a joke is this award? Jerry has won one in 1977. He has zero Penrose Awards during the last 17 years of turning BC's hockey program into the best in the nation. That's with taking the program over from the lowest of lows too.

How many times has he been HE COTY in those 17 seasons? Obviously he's made the FF several times.
I think it speaks more to the Hockey East coach of the year award. Since the only way to be included in the Penrose is to be Coach of the Year in your league or make the NCAA Semifinals.

Either way, since Jerry has arrived, they have been staples in the Frozen Four and have won three national titles. So if getting to the frozen four is a qualifying trigger, he has had many opportunities regardless of what the league did. Year after year the guy has his team peaking at the right time. Sorry, but that's coaching. You can have all the talent in the world, but when mismanaged, it can be disasterous. What about recognizing the value of going 17-0 the last half of the season? Not losing in February and March, the two most important months of the year for teams seeking trophies. What Bazin is doing at Lowell is very impressive, but how much of it was the fact that their former coach was pathetic? How do we know the players didn't quit on the former coach? In fact, their top 5 scorers are upperclassmen. There's an argument that they mailed it in last year and Bazin is being rewarded on the former coaches incompetency.
Everyone points to the underdog coach exceeding expectations, what about the team who continues to win with targets on their back? Once again, there's BC performing among the nations finest college hockey teams and surviving in what Jerry calls the "take your sticks away" tournaments (HockeyEast and NCAA).
Maybe it's just assumed he is the best in the business....and if that's the case, throw the guy a bone every once in a while.

It's definitely an interesting discussion. He's basically an eastern version of Herb Brooks over a longer period of time (check his awards and stats as well).
It's one of those things. Just like with defensemen getting awards and AAs, some yahoos will look around at the stats and give your top 2 point-scoring Dmen in hockey the two spots for first team AAs. They don't watch enough to actually formulate an honest opinion.
Give the COTY to the guy that did such a great job this year. Sure I understand that. But as Steve pointed out, it's really based on who did a terrible job last year and how much an improvement you can make. For a guy like York, that's impossible to win when you win almost 25 games every year at minimum most years. Given that he lost Muse, Gibbons, Whitney, Hayes and Atkinson, you could make one heck of an argument that he absolutely should own that trophy and did as amazing of a job as anyone else. But it's going to Bazin because Lowell is Lowell and BC has the best and should win with that talent (recruiting = shooting fish in a barrell). I'm ok with that as long as he keeps winning the other trophies! If you ask any hockey fan that has a clue who the best coach in college hockey is, upwards of 95% will say Jerry York hands down, not even the fanboys have claimed Parker is better for the past few years - that ship has sailed a long time ago. But only a few (BC fans) will say he should win the Penrose though. Make any sense? Of course not. But that's the way it is.
The media sells it, and you live the role.
