Very big game tomorrow night out at Amherst.
I'm not too keen on going out there to face off against a pretty **** good team after having what amounted to drill & shooting practice against Providence and Harvard. This is a pivotal game for BC - for HE's standings and also to feel good again about beating someone real. They need this one as a steppingstone to get some momentum going into the final month of the season. I mean with the exception of their 6-1 thrashing of Maine on Jan. 15th they really haven't had a good, solid win against a good team since they were at BU Dec. 5th. They need to step it up tomorrow night and bring their best game for all 3 periods this time. It's essential they build on something right now in a game that very much counts in the standings and for so much more as well.
I really hope they can maintain the 5 defensemen shifts they were able to pull off against Harvard in order to limit Lyles's ice time to 0.
I said before that this kid is too small to be an effective defenseman - some took exception to that - but unfortunately my assessment was on target as he's totally getting exposed out there on every shift. He can't box guys out with his body so he ends up using his arms and elbows - and stick - to try to compensate - but he can't keep them under control and then he ends up in the penalty box. And to make matters worse, he's getting burned left & right plus can't angle guys over to the boards away from the net.
If BC only had Cross or Wey for the BU & Lowell game recently we very well could have taken both. Lyles was definitely the difference in both games. He brought the ship down and took away BC's chance of winning a couple of tight games against formidable foes to really build on something at the time.

Question I want to throw out there for anyone who might know about this:
Does anyone know how BC works their distribution of hockey scholarships?
In their media guide there are only 11 scholarships mentioned as being designated for 11 players, with Sneep receiving something phrased a little different - some sort of special fund.
And not one of the incoming freshman was mentioned as receiving one of those scholarships.
The mentioned recipients were:
Muse
Smith
Joe Whitney
Gibbons
Price
Hayes
Atkinson
Cross
Shea
Almeida
Carey
Sneep -- aforementioned special fund
I'm very puzzled at how this whole thing works.
2 second rounders & #19 overall pick are paying their way this year because their freshman?? That doesn't really jive from where I'm sitting.
Furthermore, I read many D-1 teams have 18 scholarships they distribute.
That's the limit mandated by the NCAA.
Then I read that BC only gives out 12??
And 12 is what you get this year if you count this particular 'fund' Sneep is receiving - phrased differently than a scholarship.

I believe there are 11 endowed scholarships. We offer 18 scholarships like every other HE school. Somestimes for 4 year, sometimes 3 and 1 sometimes 2 and 2. Ben Smith paid his way for his first two years.

I'm very pleased that NESN has the BC-Massachusetts game tomorrow night. I know these televised games are selected before anyone knows whether they'll be good contests (and why the NFL has 'flex-scheduling'), so it appears that this week ended up being a good choice.
This one and the Monday Beanpot contest versus BU are crucial for BC. It would be huge to win them both.

No offense, but how many people in the building will actually know that the teams are vying for that #2 spot. I've been to games at UMass. The crowd there isn't the type of hockey crazed fanbase that checks the standings, PWR, and out of town scores every night. Let's be honest, people are going to go to the game because they know BC is a very big name program from in-state, it's the cool thing to do, it's a school they like to hate, and that their own team isn't all that awful.

of course that doesnt factor in the boatloads of hillbillies that UNH and Maine bring compared to the zilcho BC fans that normally attend that dump... but i digress.

having been to a UMass hockey game, I was very impressed by the atmosphere, and how loud the fans were. That being said, I didnt necessarily get the impression that the place was hockey crazed like BU or NU, considering the size of the school and how many students were there. i would probably agree that many people who otherwise dont know much about hockey are going to the game because its a big game and its the "cool thing to do." thats not to say the same thing doesnt happen at those big bc/bu games though. out of curiosity, how often does the place sell out? last time i was there it was pretty close, but the place is pretty big, so i wasnt sure if it happens all that often.

There's also a significant flaw in your numbers considering BC games are always when class is in session. UMass had one of the longest winter breaks known to man (finally changed this year) and having 4-5 games with the entire student body gone tends to skew the numbers quite a bit. I don't have the time to run those numbers but you seem to so I'll let you have it.

The crowd is one of the loudest you'll get at a college hockey game but very crude. Their chants aren't witty or original just vulgar and they know very little about hockey. By far the least knowledgable fans I've ever been around. No one else even comes close. They're like a bunch of Mite 3 parents.

It's much nicer than Mullins, that's for sure. It's even nicer this year with more annual improvements done to the building. The enormous widescreen HD video boards are pretty nice, as are the new banners and it was repainted in spots inside the arena. It has nice trophy cases too. Not that UMass people would know anything about that.
BC also has 3-5 games played while students are gone and they are not included in student ticket packages. Thanksgiving break, the tail end of Christmas break, and spring break (sometimes including the QFs hosted at BC, also something UMass isn't very familiar with). The difference is that BC packs the house for those games (excluding the QFs, not that it matters) with very good bulk sales to youth hockey teams. I take it UMass does not. Boo hoo.
