Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

I got a group consisting of myself and it looks like 8 other students to go down to this weekends UMass-Lowell game. Anyone else going? Should be a great game. Anyone know where the great places to eat before the game are?

I'll likely be there with a few others.

It's Lowell, so there's not much of great interest nearby. I'll see if Pike's Peak has a pregame bar. There's usually a big BC representation in Lowell.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

He does not have an advisor/agent calling the coaches 24/7 promoting his cause and bullying them into more icetime.

As others have mentioned, I can't see York allowing that.

I'll be in Lowell.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

There's a lot to like about Lowell. Never been there myself but within walking distance to the arena is Lowell's best known restaurant Cobblestones. It used to have a great reputation and as far as I know it still does.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Dont worry about Lyles, he is a heck of an athlete and will do a very good job, very good.
He has been behind the 8 ball since day one because so many reputation kids have been brought in and they get the benefit of the doubt over him. He does not have an advisor/agent calling the coaches 24/7 promoting his cause and bullying them into more icetime. Watch his production and plus minus over the next month and compare it to the others. He will be a strong addition. As long as he settles down and keeps it simple, he will excel

Interesting thing mentioned here about advisors/agents lobbying coaches for their players to get more ice time or whatever else. I never realized that must occur. Adds a whole other layer of dynamics to wonder about regarding players' roles. Wonder what conversations ever transpired between York & Kenny Ryan's people prior to him departing after 2 pre-season games. Apparently not much communication right before the departure though, since York said he was stunned.

That's a tangent, however.

Regarding Malcolm Lyles, I hate to be negative on a college player, but that kid is WAY too small to be a regular & effective replacement for Patrick Wey. I mean he's like Cam Atkinson's size! He can't physically win battles in/near the boards or in front of the net, and that's kind of important for a defenseman. Pretty big component to be lacking, I think. At least he seems to move the puck effectively from what I've watched, and hasn't gotten burned, either. He also gets into position well and breaks up forwards' progress in open ice alright. But that size factor is going to be exposed the more he's out there, I see that coming. Best of luck to the kid, though. I hope he might be able to compensate for his size somehow.

Another option would be the Lowell Beer Works which is a couple of blocks to the left (towards the campus) of the arena.

Parking in Ayotte Garage is only $5.00, I believe they are getting $10.00 for the lot in front/left of the arena. If you get there early you may also find some street parking for free.

He's listed as 2 inches taller and I personally don't think Cam Atkinson is 5'8" as I've stood next to him.

5'10" isn't huge and sure he's smaller than Wey but he should be able to hold his own and it is a height that is acceptable at D1 for a puck mover like him. Warsofsky isn't big either and he's quite good playing defense for BU. JD Forrest was about Lyles' size as well.

OK, you've got me with the facts, Carmine. He at least LOOKED Atkinson's size on the ice last Friday night. 5'10? - Wow. Maybe you can get away with a puck-moving defenseman on the 3rd line. They have thus far when he's out there. AND Maine is pretty **** big, too, so that's a positive. Believe me, I wish the kid the very best & will root for him. We had a particular defenseman last year who was VERY big & physical - whom I was a big fan of - but KIND of (sarcastic tone insert) tended to put us on penalty kills rather frequently. I suppose a puck-moving D man puts you at less of a disadvantage than that does.

By the way, that particular BIG & physical aforementioned defenseman is struggling to find himself in the pro level (AHL) I'm sad to say. Saw him play in NOV. & looked very unsure of himself out there in his short shifts.

His teammate Benn Ferriero, however, is flourishing. He got a A mid-season report card by Worcester Sharks news writer to complement some pretty nice comments about his game thus far. He looked really good the night I saw him play - scored, as a matter of fact - and he looked like he's adjusted perfectly to the pro game. Pretty ironic the Sharks discovered Ferriero & decided they wanted him after coming to Boston to scout their '07 first round pick defenseman playing at the Heights. Hope things turn around for Nick. I think he has the tools for the NHL game if he can get things together.

As others have mentioned, I can't see York allowing that.

I'll be in Lowell.

They only had about 75 conversations with Petreckis advisors, 250 with Boyles, same with Gerbe's etc

It goes on all the time, sad but true

Dont be then. He is bigger then Atkinson, close to 5'10", 175 LBS and ripped. Strong off the charts. Set several records at Boyles last summer... Every bit as good as Way. If given the chance, he will surprise people.

Also, don't look now, but it looks like Harvard is becoming the 2nd best team in the Greater Boston Area.

That's great for Benn, it's always good to see players succeed at the next level. Now if he goes back to BC this summer and gets his degree, (that he's very close to, yet decided to blow off the last month of school) I'll have greater respect for him. Jerry and BC Hockey take graduation rates very seriously, so to see Benn shut it down a month to go before graduating must have been painful for the coaches to accept.

thats a stupid thing to post. he in fact did the work over the summer and graduated
you having greater respect for him is meaningless. if it matters that much to you, email him or go to his facebook and tell him. to call him out on a discussion board without facts is immature
