Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012 season thread
Kobasew's knack for getting the clutch goals was unreal that year. Starting with that game at Harvard over Thanksgiving break when another all-time clutch guy, Mike Lephart, tied the game with the goalie pulled before Kobasew won it in overtime.
From there he grabbed the GWG in the Beanpot opener and then another goal vs. BU in the Beanpot final.
Back at the Garden again he got the GWG vs. UML in the HE semis.
We all know what he did in the Frozen Four.
But I still maintain his biggest goal was the GWG against Maine in the Centrum. It was 3rd period, Maine had just cheated to tie it up (shocking) by slashing the stick out of Orpik's hands and then swept his stick into the corner intentionally, and then Chuckles just surprised Yeats with a laser top shelf with a full head of steam. Losing to that maggot Walsh was a real possibility that day and God knows what would have happened if not for that goal. He scored, Walsh cried, got booted, BC scored again and the rest is history. I put it up there with the OT goal by Whitney vs. Miami in that same building as it was not necessarily what won BC a national title but they never get to the FF without it and was a huge hurdle to get over to get there.
His style is certainly similar.
You piqued my curiosity so I went back to 2001.
Kobasew frosh (only) season was 3rd in scoring with 27 goals, 22 assists, 49 points (Behind Gionta 33-21-54 and Kolanos 25-25-50).
Led the team in game winning goals (10).
First in PPG (14)
1 Shortie and 1 Hat Trick
That was one HeII of a freshman season. Not to mention HE Tournament MVP and Rookie of the Year, IIRC.
Check out the stats for that team. Holy Crap!
