Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012 season thread

Best part of tonight though is BU lost to Holy Cross. :D

i'm in disbelief:confused::D ...........great come back for our guys tonight. I didnt get to see it but a huge disparity in the shots..........did we control the play the way the shots suggest? and we have a superstar in the making with Arnold:)

the shots were very misleading. through 2 periods we led 28-18 but i would suspect that almost all 18 of NU's were better from any one of ours. I dont have access to in depth scoring analysis like grade A chances but I would suspect they were in NU's favor. BC wasn't skating hard enough to generate quality scoring chances and was just throwing the puck on net from all angles. (Granted, that is the scouting report on rawlings because he is prone to softies) but again, through 40, even 50, minutes, the offense wasnt your typical eagles offense.

up to then, NU played as sound of a game as you can expect. excellent defensively and relentless offensively, chipping pucks through the neutral zone and just driving to the net. Milner really played well, i thought, considering how lackadaiscal his team played in front of him for the most part. NU's forecheck was aggressive and constantly disrupted the breakout or stole the puck.

I have absolutely no idea what changed at the 10 minute mark of the third. I was thinking it was possible that BC was just trying to wait out the emotional push of NU (that lasted over 2 periods!) and attack in the third period. but coming out of the dressing room, shea and kreider immediately took stupid penalties and i figured we were in for more of the same. ultimately, two simple shifts changed that when almeida and dumoulin drove the net on similiar looking plays and tucked the puck past rawlings to tie the game. after that, BC opened the floodgates offensively and was all over NU (who only got 4 shots in the third) for the rest of the game. at that point it felt like only a matter of time before BC would win.

Wow, didn't see that happen in the video stream from NU. Big loss and defense will have to suck it for 2 months without him. Does that mean Mark Begert will see playing time?

Gruesome injury to think about but obviously glad it happened now rather than later. Who am I to question york, but I never understood carrying only seven dmen especially when the 7th doesn't have a ton of expectations.

you arent going to find too many D-1 caliber players who are willing to be your 8th defensemen. hopefully no one esle gets hurt along the way. i'm sure York will be utilizing his 4 forward power play and 3 forward penalty kill alot more to keep the remaining experienced defensemen fresh during games. steve whitney is about to get a much bigger role.

bc hockey: begerts cant be choosers

""If we had won that game it would have been really unfair because Holy Cross really out-played us," -- Parker

Anyway, I just wanted to say that the new uniforms are awesome. The four stars on the neck is just fantastic.

Heading up to Lowell on Friday's game? Thinking of driving up to see the team play. Always fun to be at Tsongas.

I'm somewhat surprised that a sliced tendon isn't season ending, like an ACL? If he comes back at close to 100% after the break I'll be happy, but as someone else mentioned, if anyone else goes down we may be in trouble. I wonder if any of our forwards have experience on D? What about Brooks Dyroff, he's got size and some playing time, I wonder if he starts practicing on defense? One other thing is that our guys typically come back on the earlier side of Jerry's predictions, so maybe he's out 4-6 weeks instead? Fortunately we have some easy games coming up, but he'll certainly be missed against Notre Dame....

Sure, the quality of 7/8 is a step down, but they brought in someone like Patch Alber as a walk on. There weren't any immediate expectations or high expectations for him. The bigger thing is that they usually carry eight dmen. I'd suspect most elite programs carry at least eight dmen. Carrying seven is risky.

I think T Atkinson has played some D as well here a couple of years ago

Long live beige!! Hate "gold" (orangey-yellow).

Have you taken any photos of BC in their new home jerseys. I like to see the color scheme on the numbers so that when I get the new jersey I can have someone put the correct color scheme on it. Not sure what font or style they are using on the numbers. I'm glad they're not slanted as in the old jerseys.

BC won a national championship with only 6 D for all but the first game and several guys playing hurt though not missing many games.

I will be there as always when BC is up here. living in the Merrimack Valley, BC at Tsongas is sooooo much easier and thanks SteveF, for the reply and in depth analysis on the NU game , seems we were very fortunate and i suspect that recipe isn't going to work too often against decent teams especially on the road.......

Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012 season thread

Just like we love to channel our inner Jack Parker and pounce when players don't show up, we also have to give credit when players up their game. The first weekend of the season, I wasn't sure if Kevin Hayes made the trip out to N.D. But, as ineffective as he was in BC winning the Ice Breaker, he has been as effective since returning home. That line of Hayes, Arnold, and Kreider are not only skilled, they are beasts. They will be very tough to play against physically, from a size, toughness and speed perspective, for most teams. They looked like men against boys Friday night against Umass. If they all stay hungry, they should create huge match-up problems.

5-1 anyone impressed yet? I know the NU game wasn't up to some people's standards, but they won a close game on the road, at a tough barn, six games into the season, against a competitive NU team. I'd say, Wey's injury aside, the positives outweigh the negatives. Certainly want to work on playing physical without taking penalties, but with all the questions coming into the season, it's tough to complain about some small developmental areas.

Keep it going in the right direction. UML will be another good test. A team they should beat on paper, but it's on the road and as we know, anything can happen in this league. The teams that succeed and pull away from the pack, beat the teams they should, home or on the road.

#12 has a nice stat line. He's picked it up but I still catch him standing still here or there in the neutral zone. I just want to see that hustle in all 3 zones.

After 6 games:
Positives:
- Freshman class. Not a huge class but an impact player from the start in Gaudreau. He is simply filthy. Straight is bigger than I expected and has shown some good signs. Linell just had a great game the other night. Both of these last two look to be impact players down the road as early as 2nd semester maybe. Billet? Gotta get him in there... maybe Saturday if they already secure 2 points. Begert will also be dressing I assume so we might get a look at him for a few months sparingly.
- Arnold. INCH can say, "You heard it here first" as they had the quotes from York about Arnold. He is on fire right now. Playing well in all 3 zones, plays a nice complete game. Fantastic player.
- Milner. I don't anticipate goaltending being a problem.
- Shea/Macleod. Both have been steady at least, which is about what we need from them. Might need one to step up here and elevate with Wey gone. Consistency is key. As long as these two can be consistently ok they will help the D out a lot. Macleod has definitely improved from last year, looks more comfortable, and less hesitant.
- Some good players still haven't contributed much such as Whitney and Carey. This team firing on all cylinders will be scary.
- Wins in tough environments. Will pay dividends down the road.
- Kreider. In great shape, dominating down low and in front of the net. Giving us some production.
- Facing adversity at NU and overcoming it.

Negatives:
- Kreider. Penalties are Petrecki-like and that foolishness isn't going to cut it for much longer.
- Power play: Not bad but not great. Needs some work. Having a few of the guys with one-timers getting set up and using them will be the biggest thing IMO. Whitney and Cross have great one-timers, esp Whitney. It's a huge asset in college on the PP and there aren't many guys at this level with a great one-timer.
- Wey injury. To be honest I was expecting more from him before the injury but this will be a possible issue for a few months.

Wait and See:
- 4th line. We'll know more as the season progresses how these guys can do as a shutdown line.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012 season thread

^^^ I was prepared for 3-3 and was hopeful of 4-2 at this point given the schedule and the losses from last year's roster...........so, yeah, i'm impressed , so far;)

Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012 season thread

Great content guys, some thoughts thus far from my end.

Am I impressed at 5-1? Record wise sure but there are things to work on. The thing I've gathered is that HE is pretty down this year.

Some notes:
Hayes fits in much better with Arnold & Kreider. Some great size that can wear down opponents.
Gaudreau: he is a magician behind the net. Great pickup.
Straight: impressive to hold his own in both ends with 2 seniors..good two way C
PK: 90.6%
Still need to solve that 2nd point player (first Kreider, then Carey)
Milner has been impressive, to be honest I wasn't sure if we were going to get freshman year Milner or sophomore year.
Kreider needs to cut down on the penalties, he is already halfway at his total from last year.
The D has been very meh so far IMO, way too many breakdowns in own end.

As I said on Friday, this team has a chance to go on a nice run here and distance itself from others:
