Boston College 2024-25 TV * JG * MG

It's a great team. But there are cracks in the foundation that need to be fixed or good teams are going to exploit.
Yes.

I looked it up, they were 38% from the dot last night, a large departure from their already-terrible 47% season rate, and I still feel like they were decent in the first period on faceoffs in my opinion so imagine the numbers in periods 2 and 3. That plus a bad PP is a recipe for disaster in tournaments.

"The Gustafsson turnover is pointless to worry about as the game was already over and they weren't going to sniff a goal anyway (but it was bad)." Why not call him out too? Those two turnovers directly resulted in goals and put the nail in the coffin. Also what was the decision to put Dean on the second line? He has been horrible this year... That was a very bad decision - he is not a playmaker and kept that line from being impactful.

I also want to point out that BC was pushed around in the 2nd and 3rd. BU threw some bodies around and prevented BC from their speed and puck possession game. BC did not know how to respond and the coaching staff did not adjust.

Brown did not and blew another BEANPOT in two years with two very talented teams. I don't expect Leonard and Perreault back next year and our chances against BU in the POT not so good.

Goalie can do it for you, last night he kept BU in it. The game turned on a few big plays in the second and then it was rope a dope in the third.
The two goals Fowler gave up for the 2-1 BU lead was all they needed. Both top shelf snipes that caught him leaning towards chest level to ice level shots. Both shots, the BU shooter had a clear path to the net with no BC defender to distract the shooter. Not much difference between the two teams in talent.

After period one, not sure why BC stop attacking and let BU take it to them and lost the game.

Some stats for everyone to digest.
BC is 55th in the country is faceoff % and 52nd in PP.

I went back and looked at the national champions from the past 6 years (technically 7). They all have a good PP and good faceoff %s

2024 22% PP, .498 faceoff - a rarity in this group but of course they did go 54% vs BC in the national title game
2023 22% PP, 57% faceoff
2022 24% PP, 54% faceoff
2021 23% PP, 54% faceoff
2019 21% PP, 52% faceoff
2018 23% PP, 50% faceoff

With a 47% faceoff and criminally bad 16.7% PP (with this talent) this team is going to get launched into the sun in both tournaments if they don't improve on these two things drastically.

Sounds like Jellvik is out long-term. Happy Tuesday.

I would move D Michael Hagens up to forward with James Hagens & Stiga. MH is an excellent skater with good offensive instincts. He played forward earlier in his career. 20+ years ago, Jerry York moved D Marty Hughes with similarly good offensive skills, up to forward with terrific results. BC had their chances to win this game in the first period, but only 1 goal to show.

Marty Hughes was one of my favorites back in the day. Persevered through a rough senior year with his mother's passing. Back on point -- and forgive the pun -- I'd put Minnetian on the point on the PP instead of a fourth forward.

I'll take anyone that gets pucks to the net. They only have 12 PPGs on the entire season. That's an ok month for some teams.

The loss of one-timer threats on each side of the ice from last year with Smith and Cutter operating on their off-wing sides has greatly diminished the unit's lethality.

Perreault playing the “high” point takes him away from being around the net where he is deadly with short passes & shots. Perhaps BC should go Gustafsson & Powell at points with Perreault, Leonard & Stiga up front. Get shots off quick and make defense scramble to cover, rather than allow them to block those calculated set ups.. BC team speed is negated on a tic tac toe power play setup, so a higher tempo similar to what we saw with Gustafsson manning the point while Powell was out w/ injury, would seem to play to our strength. Recall BC win over BU at Conte, Leonard fires that shot off goalie, and Stiga taps in rebound on opening powerplay.

BU now has the better goalie and everyone in the world knows it. What a move by Pandolfo. BU is now in serious consideration for the national championship.
Maybe this was a teeny bit of an overreaction? They got smoked at home by PC and the wunderkid gave up 4 on 21 shots and got pulled.

Poured the rubber on Hrabal, which was needed, he is a good goalie. Stopped Perreault on a clean break away on Friday and a penalty shot last night. BC was flying from the drop of the puck. I think in the first the shots were 20-3. Leonard is just a beast, I think the second goal he drew three guys to him on the half bords , passed it to the front for a tap in goal. He helps win games in so many ways. He has to stop with the the retaliation penalties, everyone one is trying to goad him into a penalty. Last night he was clearly taken down and they got him for embellishment, which was a bad call. I would hate to play against him.

Tough drive back with all that snow ⛄️ but eventually got home safely. Long 3 hrs in dangerous conditions but was worth it after Friday’s awful loss.

Hard to gauge this team at times but when it’s one and done you can not have slip ups during the game that can end your season or not play a 60-minute game

I could barely make it out but they really hate on Leonard with the ‘ F@@@ Ryan Leonard’ cheer and even last year here he was constantly booed each time he touched the puck

Good to see them bounce back finally and get a road win in front of college hockey's dumbest fanbase. Seems like Jellvik is out for quite a while so they are going to have to get things figured out up front. I found it very interesting they put Traeger in for Shamburger, he was quite good on Friday, but Traeger was also solid last night. It got me thinking perhaps personnel needs to be moved around. The Joyce brothers continue to be solid in their roles and I am not sure they should leave the lineup even at full health; Connor Joyce adds some heft to the lineup. Bottom line is there are guys that are capable and the staff needs to find the guys and the combinations here in the next few weeks. Maybe they rotate guys in and out for a while to see who remains consistent. Some guys may need to watch the playoffs in street clothes regardless of whether that makes an NHL GM happy.

The officiating was terrible (of course); especially calling the embellishment on Leonard. Meanwhile, Mr. Leonard needs to stop with the stupid penalties. We all can see he is targeted by other teams, often with headshots or attempted headshots, but they have to kill about 1 penalty per night of his and it's just not tenable or acceptable. Can Letourneau just be an enforcer if he remains in the lineup?

Faceoffs were much improved: 56%. Perhaps this is more of a thing where they just weren't concentrating on it and took it for granted and now it's a bit more of a gameday emphasis or a mental thing that was an issue previously? Joyce was 6 of 7.

At this point staying healthy has to be the top priority especially with every team trying to kill Leonard.

Aside from Friday night, they've been coming out with some dominating first periods lately but just can't seem to get more than a 1-goal lead in that period and end up making things more interesting than they need to.

Interesting fact of the day. Ryan Leonard is the first back-to-back 25+ goal scorer in the program since Cam Atkinson (30 and 31 in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011). Nathan Gerbe also accomplished this feat in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Jeff Farkas has also done it and Brian Gionta did it in four straight seasons (goat conversation). Tony Voce had two but not back-to-back. Farkas is the only one that didn't get a ring, but wasn't far from winning three. Gerbe basically single-handedly won them the title in 2008.

Leonard likely will match the back-to-back 30+ goal campaigns of Atkinson, Farkas, and Gionta since he had 31 last year as a freshman if he can net another 5 over the course of the next few weeks.
