Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

UCOnn will have a better football team than BC in a few years. Top to botom, it's just a better run athletic department and so once UConn is more established at the D1 level for football, they will assume their rightful place. UConn is the new kid on the block for football, but like basketball, BC will soon be inhaling UConn's exhaust.

BC just doesn't have the athletic department to seriously compete in the major D1 sports (basketball, football, etc). They are never going to have a football or basketball team that can compete for national titles.

Jimmy Hayes played very well Friday night vs Washington with the big club. Led the team in shots with 5 and is back in the line up again tonight at Joe Louis. Probably not as much fun as playing at Lawler but what the heck

Hockey, on the other hand? BC will eat UConn's lunch there all day long!

i agree with your points on the athletic department overall, but being a state school.. i cant see UConn ever paying a top notch football coach enough money to come and stay considering how much they pay their bball coach (rightfully so)

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

One worry I have is that we are a bit thin on defense. It will be interesting to see how Macleod pans out this year as he came in as sort of a project last year and seemed to struggle a bit. Would be great if he became a bit more dependable.

Agreed. This is something I mentioned months ago. After Wey, Cross and Dumoulin you just don't know what you might get from the other 3. Shea is hot and cold - probably an average defenseman on a good day but all they need from him is to be a #6 and get the job done. Alber has a bit more upside offensively and can be pretty good but tailed off a bit last year (I think he got hurt). Macleod really didn't get that much time for me to have much of an opinion on. He could be a potential #4. It will be interesting to see how this group gels - I think they'll be fine by the end of the year. Cross is a great leader and will have them playing as a very good unit.

I will say I think Wey is quite underrated (and most people know he's good) and can be a very good Dman with solid overall game. Cross was very good last year and we all know Dumoulin is filthy and has been since Day 1.

A few of the freshman and sophomores were over in the plex Saturday for the Fanfest and you really have to hand it to Jerry for getting such great kids. Billett (I screwed up again with a goalie), Brown, and Arnold were particularly nice to my boy.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Do you really miss them kicking your ***** every year in basketball?

Don't worry, if they join the ACC that tradition will resume....

Basketball? Who gives a frick about basketball? If I wanted to watch a ball get thrown through a hoop, I'd go see the seals at the aquarium. It's as important to me as the BC women's water polo team.

More people than give a frick about hockey. You know if BC made the Final Four you'd be watching.

That said, I'm glad the NBA is about to lockout. More airtime for the NHL hopefully.

Women's water polo is way better, at least there you have wet girls in bathing suits....

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

This year more than others, leadership is going to be a huge factor. How this group gels and buys into the team will determine their success. Tommy Cross appears to be a solid leader, so that's a great start. In my opinion, Whitney, Hayes, Arnold and one of the goalies need to produce for this team to win championships. BC will get production from Kreider, Mullane and Carey, but they need the other three to improve their offensive production. It will also be interesting to see if BC forms a shut down line. The lack of a shut down line (think Gannon, Greene, Price, Lombardi, etc) killed them in the NCAA tournament last year. With the loss of some offensive studs, they need to play solid shut down defense and win close games. Having one of those defensive lines against opponents top lines, allows BC to create favorable match-ups down through the 3rd and 4th lines.

Going into the season without the weight of a national ranking will help this team. It also makes it exciting for us fans. If they win any real hardware this year, no doubt we will witness a few breakout seasons. Carey? Kreider? Arnold? Hayes? They have the horses, who is going to step up and carry this team offensively?

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Arnold is a very good PK guy and could be key shutdown center. Had 20 points as an 18 year old freshman(thats stepping it up) and s SHG's

They have more than enough to make a run at Hockey East but after that, to many older deeper teams.

Atkinson had 19 as a fresh, Hayes had 13, Kreider 23

tending will catch up with them in March

i'd have a little better feeling about the goaltending if Milner played like he did his freshman year. the few times he did get in there he wasn't too good though it's hard to judge because he simply didnt play enough, the sample size was maybe too small. We'll see how Billet figures into this too very soon

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

BC is ranked 5th in the USCHO preseason poll with 2 first place votes.

just goes to show you that they don't know what they're doing:rolleyes: we know that's way too high for this team right now...............they obviously some how take into consideration where you were at the end of the previous year:confused: hand the two voters who voted BC 1st place votes another beer:p

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Ben Smith took a shoulder to the head and looked like he was knocked out before his face hit the ice. Scary scene.

I'm gonna disagree with that last part only because BC was thought of as the team to beat/one of the teams to beat last year and got bounced in the first tourney game. The key is making the dance. I was tempted to say it matters how you're playing at the time as well, but going off BC's loss last year, I guess that isn't a huge factor. Just make the dance and you have a shot. I think a good example of that would be Miami from a few years back.

Also, if anything, I think the goaltending might be a question mark to start the year, but I would anticipate it improving as the year goes on. Who was a bigger recruit? Muse or Billett?

this from bceagles.com with Jerry providing his thoughts which are always a "must read"

http://bceagles.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/092611aaa.html

was that a JCarter sighting ??;)

One note there is that Alber went from recruited walk-on to earning a scholarship.

agree with your points.

one other thing, BC Hockey is the 3rd at best sport fan/support wise at BC.

BC will always be a football than basketball school. Hockey is a very distant thought to alum and athletic dept

This isn't a revelation. Football and Men's Basketball run the show at every institution that play. Hockey drew 6,292 per game last year. Hoops drew 5,324 per game. Taking the economics out of it and focusing on pure fan support, I don't know how you can make that claim.

God, please stop with this UConn football garbage. They just hired Paul freakin' Pasqualoni. Whatever momentum was built by Edsall will slowly be destroyed. BC will be making the next hire in football and it will undoubtedly be a young guy this time who will then be ahead of wherever UConn ends up. UConn will never compete for football national titles, neither will BC. UConn is better in hoops, BC better in pucks. What's the point?

Do you really miss them kicking your ***** every year in basketball?

This is too funny. As a Harvard guy, why are you so concerned with BC/UConn?

For BC?

I wouldn't say 6 seniors and 8 juniors is young, not at all. That is very much in line with their program

He might have been looking at birth year. BC is usually amongst the youngest in that area. He also may have been looking at the number of freshmen coming in. This is a larger roster than they usually carry.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Muse was outstanding at Nobles, far more consistant than either of the two coming in, pre BC. Might not have had the fan fare because he stayed at one school and was not a dog and pony show but Muse was very, very good at Nobles.

Brian Billett also stayed with one program, the NH Jr. Monarchs, with little fan fare, and has never been part of a dog and pony show, at any level from the Charleston (SC) Wolverines to Team Carolina through the Seacoast Spartans and Maine H.S. hockey. There are benefits to quietly learning his craft, challenging coaches to challenge him, not taking anything for granted and being a student of the game. He will wear the # 1 proudly and give it his all at every off-ice work-out, classroom session, practice AND every minute of every game. His teams have won at each level; his teammates have taken their game to the next level. Steady as he goes, so will BC.

lets hope
I would bet he gets the job done+. Kind of like Muse, it is a sometimes no win spot when team is strong
He is a good one
