Big Ten Conference Tournament

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

No one answered my question. No one shows up to the CCHA tournament, even when Michigan is in it. Why would it be any different for the B1G tournament?

Funny there were about 15,000 no shows there dressed like hockey fans when I last attended the CCHA finals 2 years ago.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Do we know whether Minnesota travels well? I'm not sure anybody's ever asked them to go farther than St. Paul. ;)

A bunch of us were in Buffalo a number of years ago, and in Columbus a while after that. I don't know if we "traveled well" or not but some of us did travel.

That's because they sell only two tickets. The CCHA tourney sells roughly 1/3 the tickets they sell for the WCHA Final Five, and for roughly the same prices.

Thats not true if Michigan is in the Finals that building is sold out pretty much. The two finals that ohio state played against michigan drew 17 and 16 thousand i believe.

So the BTHC can look forward to selling this thing out if OSU and Michigan play in the final every year? Sweet.

Grand Rapids regional 2004 (9 hr drive)
Columbus Frozen Four 2005 (12 hr drive)
Grand Forks regional 2006 (4 1/2 hr drive)
Denver regional 2007 (13 hr drive)
...

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

There were about 26 Gopher fans in Grand Rapids in 2004.
Minnesota's band was there, and I imagine there was at least 25 in that group.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only Gopher fan that made that trip besides the band. :p

Thats not what i am saying. Any Final that involves michigan at joe louis arena is pretty much a sell out. I just used those 2 games against the buckeyes as an example.

Not surprising considering Ann Arbor is in Detroit's backyard.

They don't count - they are forced to go. :)

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Me. I don't think that Milwaukee has a large enough base of hockey fans to support the tournament compared to the likes of Detroit or St. Paul. Either UW is good and it's a success or UW is bad and it is a disaster, I don't see much in the way of middle ground. I'd have more faith if the Showdown had remained in Milwaukee and successful.

Just getting back to the internet so sorry for the long delayed response. Milwuakee couldn't draw enough fans to continue hosting the WCHA tournament on a biennial basis. Hell, regular season high school games in MN outdraw your state championship. Your fanbase will not support it. UW has a good following in Madison. You even sell out some of your games against rivals. Outside of Madison the loyalty wains.

I was sort of joking... but since you brought it up.

I distinctly remember the Pepsi Center being mostly Sioux-green. With quite a few Air Force fans, naturally. A pretty solid contingent of DU and CC jerseys (even though neither team was playing, and we were all cheering for Air Force), and the usual spattering of Michigan gear. Minnesota was the 6th best represented team at that regional. :)

I'm sure you have the counts to back that up. :)
