Big Ten Conference Tournament

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

I have one question for you. Why is the Big Ten basketball tourney in Indinapolis every year if it is not about money? That would sell out any where they put it and they don't move. Is it because they guarantee the most money? If so I would think the Xcel would guarnatee the most money when it comes to the hockey tourney. If not why is it there?

The basketball tournament started out in Chicago and then alternated between Indy and Chicago for years. It has been in Indy for the last few years but in 2013 it will be in Chicago again, then alternate between Indy and Chicago for the next few years after that.

The BTHC tournament will go wherever they can make the most money. I hope no one is naive enough to believe any differently. The ADs and school presidents won't care at all about not giving their team a fair shot at being closer to home as long as they can make the most $$$ at the X.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

19,463 saw the MN-UND title game in '07 there - I highly doubt any MN-SCSU game topped that in attendance.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

If anyone thinks that these schools (especially Ohio State and soon to be Penn State) are interested in anything other than maximizing the profit of this tournament and getting their hockey programs out of the red, you are fooling yourselves.
Thanks for the numbers ... very enlightening.

I agree its all about the Benjamins, but if you are tOSU, the best way to kill the red ink is to start filling the rink during the regular season ... which can be aided by the excitement of the Tournament. Look for a push from Columbus to host this thing too.

And look for Buffalo to make a Pegula-push to host. Personally, the United Center would be a logical fit, which would be my choice; 5 of 6 are within a 6 hour drive plus its an excellent air hub (better than any other choice including MSP).

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

If OSU can draw 8,000 for a regular season game vs Michigan, they should draw that for the tourney.
That game's attendance was actually over 9800 and it was a Friday night game which usually is a weaker crowd that a Saturday game.

That's great, but can they do that consistently, year-in and year-out? Ohio State is playing relatively well this year. What if they aren't the year the tourney is scheduled? How many would show up to watch a championship game without OSU?

People are REALLY overestimating how many people are going to travel for this tourney IMO.

OSU has indeed been in the red for a number of years with their hockey program. During the end of last coach's tenure they weren't selling enough tickets to pay for turning on the lights - embarrassing! You Minnesota and other fans have been fortunate that your schools actually gave a crap about hockey all these years and gave you what you needed to be successful, here King football reigns but it's FINALLY starting to change. We have a QUALITY coaching staff now and attitudes here are improving and I think in several years we will be selling 9000 tickets a game providing we're winning games. People here are more likely to pay to see OSU play a recognized conference foe like Minnesota and Wisconsin rather than schools like Ferris and Western. Hockey here is a great deal for an evening's entertainment - $12.00 for an adult ticket, $8.00 for kids and free parking! There was a study done to build a hockey only arena so we'd stop sharing with the basketball teams but the university president wants to fundraise millions for his legacy, the medical center and with us now having the most expensive college football coaching staff I'd be very surprised is the arena isn't dead for now.

Sure it's about guaranteed money. Let Minnesota have this one on the rotating schedule with Detroit. All Big Ten schools playing D1 hockey have major revunue sources in their football programs, except Minnesota.

I hope you don't think Minnesota will get any more from this tourney than any other program. Not true. That's not how the F5 works and it won't be how this works. If anything, let us have it for dragging us into this conference to begin with. Our program was very profitable and doing quite well without it.

I'd say up front not many but it's hard to say how it would be several years down the road as since we got an NHL team the town has been slowly growing a hockey mentality and a lot of locals did want to attend the Frozen 4 when we hosted.

This. And the fact that the X is a top arena in all of hockey. And will bring in (arguably with Det) the most money for a tourney like this.

If it makes sense financially, I'm sure it will happen down the road. I'm not confident that it will, but never say never.

Exactly. The X would bring in by far the most money for the Big Ten. It really wouldn't even be close, including Detroit. In St Paul you can charge more money AND get more people in the seats. I understand wanting to rotate the tournament around for the purposes of fairness, but if the B1G wants to maximize $$$, then the X is the best place for that.

Osiecki is indeed a winner. First as a player, then an assistant at UND, head coach in the USHL, assistant at UW ...
Just a matter of time. Lock up the good seats now, because tOSU will be selling out within 5 years. :) (Of course the tickets are about to get a lot more expensive.)

I figured that, but never having attended hockey in Detroit (and only having been there once, maybe 20 years ago), I didn't want to say for certain.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

id like to see it rotate between college campuses, or alternate between st paul/detroit. just what id LIKE to see.

Allow me to answer your question with another question. If it is about the money, why have the Football championship game in Indy? Why not in Detroit? Why not in Minnesota? Does Indiana have a better football fan base than Michigan? NO! Look at a map. Indy is nearly equal distant to Lincoln, State College, and even Minneapolis. Indy and Chicago are the two most centrally located cities with NBA arenas. That's why its in Indy.

You show me a spreadsheet of OSU hockey losing $2 Million a year for the last 7 years and say this is proof they want to make as much money as possible. To me, that proves they don't care how much the program loses as long as OSU gets the publicity. Like I said, this isn't the WCHA. Hockey does not control the purse strings in the B1G. Sorry Minnesota.

That's why we have the BTHC!!!!!

Minnesota didn't want it. It's absolutely ridiculous to say they don't care that their hockey program is losing $2.5 million a year. Ridiculous.

How long has OSU's program been around? Since 1963? Hosting a BTHC tournament isn't going to all of a sudden build their fan base. That too, is ridiculous. Absurd.
