Big News out of the CIS

Re: Big News out of the CIS

No, those in and around the Toronto area, which includes me, call anything west of Toronto, Southwestern Ontario. We never say western Ontario for London/Windsor, always southwestern Ontario. Not sure where the info is coming from but wherever it is from, they aren't in the know about the terminology for the area.

Thanks, but I omitted the "south" part because that is geographically correct. My point though is simply that even though the locals call it south western Ontario, doing so ignores geographic reality. It would be accurate if they reversed it and called it western southern Ontario. Geographic reality is that London is in the more westerly part of the extreme south eastern portion of Ontario. So to infer that it is in western Ontario, as in "south western" Ontario, is incorrect.

Don't quite know why I am continuing with this but by your logic can you please explain what is considered the Mid-West USA?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the mid-west is "a region of the north-central US around the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley"

Whhhuuuhhhh?? Mid-west = North-central???

Seems to make enough sense to me but it may not be the best analogy since that part of the US is a lot more "uniform" in shape, in my opinion, than is the very unusual shape of Ontario but I'd rather not beat two horses to death. Didn't realize that my half joking comment about UWO being located in eastern Ontario would create such a discussion that ignores geography...although that was my original point...the university's name does ignore geographic reality.

Forgot to mention in my last post that the second reason that I omitted the "southern" part and only mentioned the "western" part was because this discussion centered around the University of "Western" Ontario, hence my comment about it seeming that the locals call anything west of Toronto, "western Ontario"...as in the "University of Western Ontario".

Again, all one has to do if they are not proficient at geography is to take a quick glance at a map of Ontario.

I nominate this thread for "Most pointless and boring thread of the year" award. I keep getting suckered in by the "Big news" tag, only to find out that it started as a discussion of a minor CIS hockey news item, evolved into an absurd discussion of Southern Ontario geography and is now morphing into an equally boring discussion of U.S. geography. I know....I know....I could just ignore it...but I wish we could just put this one in the trash bin.

I agree....having lived in SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO and in the City of London for the better part of 30 years...I don't care what you "outtatowners" contend...it's still SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO...now... I'm going outside to watch snow melt...and oh, there's some paint drying that needs me to watch....far more interesting than this trash!!

Now, there's a well reasoned position.

I said previously that there are a lot of interesting things going on in this thread and that continues.

You two guys have missed the biggest takeaway of this conversation and you may have even contributed to it and that is namely, that most people don't give a **** about accurate thinking (ie: critical thinking)...it's too hard, not interested, can't be bothered!

It's kind of ironic, don't you think, that this forum is about our interest in a certain sport that is played by young women who spend the more important part of their days getting an education which in many disciplines centers around their gaining the ability of critical thinking?

And here you are telling us that critical thinking is nothing but trash, a complete waste of time, you'd rather watch paint dry. Well, each to his own I guess.

But if someone has difficulty following such an elementary discussion as this has been how well do you think they are going to fare in a situation that is complex and which may have far reaching consequences for them or their family? Two wrongs don't make a right but your logic would have us believe that 5 or 6 million wrongs do. Your being wrong for 30 years just proves that...you've been wrong for 30 years.

Just because 5 or 6 million people continue to mislabel something doesn't make it accurate. If they all understand each other then I guess all is well but it still doesn't make it so even if there was a reason to call it that in a previous era.

I actually never expected a response to my initial comment/question. But the ensuing discussion would seem to show that the state of affairs on the street/in the world with respect to the individual's ability to reason logically is in great need of improvement.

Sorry, Hab, if this post made you come back for "nothing", again.

Re: Big News out of the CIS

I guess we just think a little differently up here with respect to geography. i.e Upper Canada and Lower Canada; Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the East Division of the CFL; Newfoundland Time Zone (UTC - 3:30) etc.

I respect that you want to teach us the error of our ways but History trumps Geography here. If my grandfather called it Southwestern Ontario and my father called it Southwestern Ontario then, by gum, I am going to call it Southwestern Ontario also.

And it has nothing to do with our ability to 'reason logically". Just because we don't agree with you it doesn't mean that we are wrong.

And conversely, just because we agree with you doesn't mean we are right! ;)

You Canucks seem to make a big deal out of geography, for example using the fact that Americans teens can't name the Provincial Capital of Nova Scotia as proof that Canadian kids are smarter/better educated than Americans.

then we find out you don't even understand geographer of your own country either

Goes back to designations used in Colonial times.

Don't even know who the Geographer of our vast country is. Betcha you dunno who that is for the USA either. :D

Which puts it a lot closer to the eastern border of Ontario than it does to the western border, which is a couple of hundred miles west of Thunder Bay.

My guess is that the name arose based upon the population spread, particularly at the time when UWO was founded in 1878. Nevertheless, from the perspective of physical geography, London is nowhere near western Ontario. I'd call it more southern Ontario.

The most Westerly border of Ontario is considered to be in Northern Ontario as it is very far north in comparison to the area where London is located. Here in "Southwestern Ontario" is where UWO is and it is a massive world class academic institution

Blackbeards arguments make me think he is really Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Same format or train of thought when attempting to make a point.
