Big News out of the CIS

Re: Big News out of the CIS

Also, Pokechecker, I'm not quite sure what your definition of local talent may be. Here in NH, I consider southern Quebec kids and all New England kids to be local talent. The players and their families can easily drive here for games. QUOTE]

What?!!! Being able to drive there is the criteria for local? I can drive to N. Dakota & Canada but don't consider them local.

The area we're from is 1 hour from Boston, 1.5 hours from Providence, under 2 hours from Dartmouth, and under three to UVM. We can be in Montreal in almost the same amount of time it takes to get to U Maine. In a state where youth players regularly travel at least that amount of time for games, I would agree with Whoop's definition of "local".

The drive to nine US D1 schools is quicker and shorter for me than the drive to Toronto, the center of the PW/Women's hockey universe, in our own Province. Personally only consider two of these nine D1 schools as Local, but the point is that it is easy driving distance.

I can drive to North Dakota as well (actually done it), but that takes like 20+ hours from our place driving time. (1250 miles on back country roads in north, or 1500 miles using all free ways south around the lakes via Chicago)

I think in general...or for the majority of locals ;) in the US Midwest "local" is a slightly different concept with more precisely defined boundaries so to speak.

I think it is still a gray area. Gigi was probably seen as being more local because she was a Minnesota kid, but was her home a quicker drive than someone like Bozek? I don't know. It's a nebulous topic.

Perhaps it's not the majority then. When I use the term "local" it designates a Minnesota kid. When MJ recruits a Wisconsin kid, that's a local kid for him in my mind. Not a matter of miles driven for me personally.

I suppose I could adopt the alternative interpretation and celebrate the choice of locals Maryann Menefee and Brooke Garzone.

Whole thread was pretty much a nebulous topic discussion from the start. Then it devolved.

Re: Big News out of the CIS

some of you really crack me up the way you argue minutia and drift off topic

and then there is OntarioMan, first he cherry picks teams with Canadian rosters, then when that doesn't prove his point he cherry picks seasons!
LOL
hey ONMAA, if I were to cherry pick seasons how about MN winning 100% of their games and WI also nearly 100%,
that's still 20% better than your all Canadian teams
but really, you are only helping prove my point

paying Canadians to stay home would not hurt the NCAA, it would only hurt the few teams who totally depend on them, and in about half those cases it would likely improve their team, since there is no direction to go except up

and if you paid Canadians to stay home, wouldn't some Canadians simply take their place? you'd have to pay them all to stay home
maybe instead, you should pay every Canadian that moves to the US to stay home, although that would be a mighty big bill to pay

Re: Big News out of the CIS

Stop right there. Any university in Canada can give a scholarship to an American player. Whoever told you this information is filling your head with garbage. Canadian universities do the same thing as American colleges do and they charge their foreign students 3-4 times regular tuition. It doesn't make sense to spend $15k-$20k or more on one American player when we can get 3 or 4 Canadians or more for that price and get the same style or talent out of the Canadian players.

are the Canadian "Ivy" schools kind of like Canadian football?

Re: Big News out of the CIS

This brings up a good question. The top "A" players will want to go D1 but what about the "B" player? Would it not be fair to say that some D1 bubble players go D3 because of the cost that Blackbeard pointed out? Would some of these players be inclined to go to CIS if the option was available?

I think I understand the point that you are making but at the same time don't forget that there's cost at a D3 school too and some of them can't afford to offer a wide swath of full scholarships. As an example, I had a D3 coach tell me some years back that all they could offer a player, any player...no matter how highly touted, was the use of a lap top computer for four years and transportation to and from the games!

Some deal....where do I sign up?

Re: Big News out of the CIS

That's your reply to my post. *** do you mean "are the Canadian "Ivy" schools kind of like Canadian football?"

Re: Big News out of the CIS

Canada has "Ivy" schools?

In a manner of speaking...the so called "Canadian Ivies" which are UBC (British Columbia), UT (Toronto), McGill, and I think Western Ontario and possibly Queens. This is probably more up OnMAA's alley so he can correct me or fill in what I may have missed.

Queens and UWO are indeed both part of that Club. Blessed to have daughters attend UWO, UBC and Brown. All three fine institutions with academic excellence opportunities galore. Each of these schools have their own unique strengths, character and history. (Brown celebrating 250 years in 2014)
