Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

So I'll add this to my whine The WCHA in there post game review can't even give credit where due and describe how and why the the Gophers never led at one point in the game or why it went to overtime. Nope, just that the streak is alive and well.
That is Minnesota's recap. The WCHA site seems to always use the feed from the winning team. I'm not sure what they do with a tie, but I'd guess they use the one from the team that wins the shootout. That's why it takes a Gopher-centric view.

If you have the premium package you can go to Gopher All Access media at GopherSports and watch the game, I did yesterday. It was at least yesterday archived and as a subscriber I could watch the play over and over as many times as I wanted.

The Gophers are offside at exactly 3:00 to go. They line up for a face off at the dot directly in front of the Gopher's penalty box.

Brandt takes the draw for the Gophers with Menefee lined up to her right and McMillen on her left. Kessel is backed up behind McMillen at what is normally the position taken by the left D, I assume to give her some freedom from immediate contact and a bit of room to operate.

The puck goes down and is drawn to Brandt's right, towards Menefee and the boards. At this point McMillen's stick is between Lundquist's legs. Is the placement deliberate, does she seem to leave the stick in place to hamper Lundquist's movement? Perhaps but it all happens pretty fast. Lundquist reacts to the presence of the stick with a two handed swing hitting McMillen's stick. McMillen is holding on to the stick with only one hand and it goes flying out of her hand and over to the penalty box door. Also keep in mind that the official who called the penalty is down in the corner in front of the band, this all happens right in front of her, directly in her field of vision.

Penalty? Morris certainly thought so. If Fever happened to be looking directly at the play at that moment (as Morris was) and thinks it wasn't a penalty, well, hockey officiating involves a lot of subjective judgment, Fever has a right to reach his own conclusion and Morris had a right to reach the conclusion that she reached. There was certainly something there that CAN be called as a penalty.

I didn't see the whole play live, my view was sort of out of the corner of my eye, I was puck watching.

On replay it looks like a penalty to me. As the contact was made only with McMillen's stick and not her body, I believe the correct call is interference.

Great insight...thank you. If that play had happened in any of the regulation periods... no call made. Especially if the Gophers were in the lead. That's my whole point.

Dang.... please excuse my bad..... "The WCHA in their post game review"

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

Wasn't able to discern anything from the All Access playback myself...with some video playback issues upon a couple attempts. All I saw was McM skating a stride or two and picking up her stick.

The BTN telecast shows it quite clearly.

I'm serious... How could the league allow the lowly Beavers to end the streak?
The conference call came into the minor officials box after regulation.....they were very clear.....BSU would not be allowed to win and that they ok'd any and all means to get BSU back in line. Take this as a warning BSU, Don't let it happen again. :D

Actually, if you watch the BTN game footage carefully, there are several points at which you can see one of the refs has some sort of earbud in. Either she was listening to her iPod or they could get instructions from the league office during the course of play.

That could have been one of the bluetooth devises that connects with the Gophers bench....they're pretty much standard for home games. Btw, I wonder if anyone noticed the how MN is allowed to tilt the rink each period. 5 degrees isn't much, but it does help.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

I'm staying out of the whole "was it a penalty/was it not a penalty" debate. All I know is that a stick went flying, the ref's arm went up, and I thought, "OMG... the ref actually called a penalty in overtime."

That was, of course, followed by "and the Gophers are going on the power play." :D

The rest, as they say, is now history.

My personal opinion is that although it was a clear penalty I don't think you call it toward the end of a tie game or in overtime. It was a type of infraction that should have only been called if it thwarted (or directly led to) a clear scoring chance, at that point in a very tight game.

I don't believe in any conspiracy theories but I do think the Gophers caught a huge break. Seeing how the rest of the game was called (very inconsistently) I can't say I was surprised.

I left the game happy, but with some mixed emotions.

I would suspect that squeaker should provide a bunch of motivation should it be the Beavers at Ridder for a WCHA q'final series.

Agreed but I imagine the Beavers would also have a lot of motivation (given the way the game ended) plus a jolt of confidence knowing they can play with the Gophers right to the end. If that call had gone the other way (say Lundquist would have gone down with McMillen's stick in her legs) the outcome could have easily been different.

Alright alright.... ehore and pokecheck, yack it up, say whatever it takes to make yourselves feel better about that win. Yeah, I'm overboard with the conspiracy. However, MN and Coach Frost hold plenty of clout, and those officials heard a lot from both Sertich and Frost as the game progressed (missed and inconsistent calls).... Morris jumped all over meaningless, neutral zone faceoff joust to appease Frost.. She only handed out one penalty when clearly should should have called both, or not call one at all.

I never ever said it wasn't a penalty.

For the Beavers to ever come that close again to an upset vs the Gophers would be like winning powerball or being strike by lightning twice in the same day. The solar system was aligned last Saturday for a potential upset.... no way will it align again.

BSU surpassed their per game goal total and their goalie was absolutely amazing. BSU had no business (when comparing numbers vs numbers) being in position to win that game. That said, just goes to show what above average goaltending can do.

Ok, that's it... I will now leave this be (I know I said that earlier). Good luck to the Gophers on the way to the National Title and making the WCHA proud.

One thing I think that everyone in this thread can agree is that we have a lot of respect for the way the Beavers played on Saturday. I like BSU, their players, and their coach. I want them to have success, with the exception of when playing a certain opponent.

Have both Serty and Frosty been diagnosed with Shannon Miller Syndrome?

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

MN let go of her stick during the joust and it went into the air, therefore making it look SO BAD.
She let got of her stick therefore making it look so bad?

What, did she use The Force to make it fly 30 feet away while she 'let go' of it?! I mean, she plays for Minnesota, so that's possible, but I think she would have chosen a more opportune situation to use The Force in were that the case.
