Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

ugh... how embarrassing. Was actually at the Ridder to watch the game. Great team, treat to watch them. First class all the way. Hats off to Coach Frost for running up the score.

For the record, and for old man dave.... My hat goes off to coach Frost for NOT RUNNING up the score on the Beavers Friday night.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

Hey... It was a typo man. I meant NOT running up the score. Yes, I was at the Ridder. Also there for the overtime to witness the ref make that brutal call to save the Gophers. Unreal, but Everyone is happy, including the WCHA.

So old man, enjoy your tainted victory over the Beavers. Your streak is still alive.
I like this guy.

Thank you. Also, for the record, I thought Havel was unbelievable today. She should have been the number one star. That was the Bemidji team I remember from years past.

The Gophers were very fortunate to win the game but I thought the penalty call was justified. It wasn't interference, but it was slashing. And given some of the calls that weren't made along the way, particularly during the first period, Bemidji *really* shouldn't be crying about the officiating.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

Typo sarcasm aside, the poster is unhappy that the score is run up on Friday and then when the Gophers do their best to "play down" to BSU's level on Saturday unhappiness ensues again with the statement of a "tainted victory". Cake and eat it too?

If you choose to look at the glass being half full, you could go with the moral victory angle. :D

Ha, not sure what you're yapping about, but I genuinely was thankful that MN didn't run up the score on Friday. I was thankful the final score was only 8-0. As for Saturday, MN didn't play down, in fact they played very well. The difference of course was BUS goalie Havel. She got the team to overtime along with the BSU players putting in a better all around effort. BUT.... that overtime penalty was such a blatant homer call to ensure a MN victory that only a Gopher fan would see it otherwise.

No Beaver fans are complaining about the officiating..... Just me.

It was a great experience attending both games at the Ridder. Again, truly a first class program. People other than friends and family attend the games because it is an excellent product on the ice and a true college sport experience... band included.

The Gophers will go on to win the National title, so yeah... a moral victory will suffice.

Out of the 112 shots attempted by the Gophers; the stat sheet shows that 41 were blocked, Havel saved 41, 25 missed, and 3 went in. Don't remember where the other two went....

Haha... Yes, I find it quite amusing that there is no mention of a penalty or PP goal in overtime in "Womens D-1 wrap up".

"Streak busters
Bemidji State came closer to defeating No. 1 Minnesota than anyone else has over the past 40 games for the Gophers. After pasting the Beavers, 8-0, on Friday, the Gophers had to come from behind twice to outlast BSU, 3-2 in overtime. Freshman Kaitlyn Tougas scored a pair of goals in
transition to give BSU leads, only to have Minnesota roar back moments later. The Gophers only lead of the game came on the final play 3:48 into overtime. , Finland, native Mira Jalosuo slipped the puck into the net from the back door off of a feed from Kelly Terry.
overtime.

A true conspiracy?

I'm beginning to think a true conspiracy theory for sure. :)

Thoughts from others on the OT interference call?

Thoughts from others on the OT interference call?

It happened right in front of me and, as I said, I thought it was very clearly a penalty. It wasn't interference, exactly, but Lundquist slashed the stick out of a Gopher's (Meghan Lorence, I think) hand pretty blatantly. It was away from the play, hence the interference part, so the ref could have let it go uncalled but it was both obvious and dumb. And since Bemidji could easily have spent 18 minutes of the first period shorthanded, I find Fever's whining to be petty.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

Recorded the game of BTN will watch it tonight, thought the call was bad on Saturday, but thought i would see if that was the game BTN was showing. Maybe if it is a true conspiracy that part will not be shown:rolleyes:

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

McMillen was holding her stick against Lundquist's torso off of a faceoff. Lundquist didn't appreciate it and in frustration takes a bit of a swing to knock the stick away from her body. Maybe she put a little more juice into it than intended, but the stick goes flying out of McMillen's hands and lands about 30 feet away. Could the ref have let it go? Yes. But anyone who had watched that game knew that official didn't have a particularly good grasp of what to call and what not to call at any point in time. The ref didn't have to call it and Lundquist didn't have to do it, because it really wasn't going to gain her anything. Some blame both ways. BSU had done a nice job killing the resulting penalty right up until the scoring rush where too many people got caught watching the puck.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

If you have the premium package you can go to Gopher All Access media at GopherSports and watch the game, I did yesterday. It was at least yesterday archived and as a subscriber I could watch the play over and over as many times as I wanted.

The Gophers are offside at exactly 3:00 to go. They line up for a face off at the dot directly in front of the Gopher's penalty box.

Brandt takes the draw for the Gophers with Menefee lined up to her right and McMillen on her left. Kessel is backed up behind McMillen at what is normally the position taken by the left D, I assume to give her some freedom from immediate contact and a bit of room to operate.

The puck goes down and is drawn to Brandt's right, towards Menefee and the boards. At this point McMillen's stick is between Lundquist's legs. Is the placement deliberate, does she seem to leave the stick in place to hamper Lundquist's movement? Perhaps but it all happens pretty fast. Lundquist reacts to the presence of the stick with a two handed swing hitting McMillen's stick. McMillen is holding on to the stick with only one hand and it goes flying out of her hand and over to the penalty box door. Also keep in mind that the official who called the penalty is down in the corner in front of the band, this all happens right in front of her, directly in her field of vision.

Penalty? Morris certainly thought so. If Fever happened to be looking directly at the play at that moment (as Morris was) and thinks it wasn't a penalty, well, hockey officiating involves a lot of subjective judgment, Fever has a right to reach his own conclusion and Morris had a right to reach the conclusion that she reached. There was certainly something there that CAN be called as a penalty.

I didn't see the whole play live, my view was sort of out of the corner of my eye, I was puck watching.

On replay it looks like a penalty to me. As the contact was made only with McMillen's stick and not her body, I believe the correct call is interference.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers Hockey 2012-2013

If enough people care I could pull a quick clip off this and put it on YouTube for ppl to make their own judgment. I have the premium package.

Eeyore... it also happened in front of me. It was at the faceoff and the two were jousting for position... MN let go of her stick during the joust and it went into the air, therefore making it look SO BAD.

As for "easily have spent 18 minutes short", that could have gone both ways. Side note: the inconsistency of the calls were terrible. I always find that when you have two female head officials (IMHO).

You can call my whining petty if it makes you feel better. So I'll add this to my whine The WCHA in there post game review can't even give credit where due and describe how and why the the Gophers never led at one point in the game or why it went to overtime. Nope, just that the streak is alive and well.

Just calling like it is... Painful isn't it? So that's it... I'll let it go now.

The Gophers are an awesome talent and win gracefully week by week. I look forward to the day when they will be required to lose gracefully.... or tie gracefully... or only get two points gracefully.
