Gameday! Wish I could get the game from Duluth on TV in the Alexandria area...... Oh well, Schultzie and Biss on the Beaver Radio Network always do the job!

I decided to buy the UMD nchc one day pass to watch. Has been a good game so far. Bitzer playing out of his mind. Let's hope they can finish it out here.

Also it is incredibly stupid that nobody gets an extra point after the first ot. Needs to be a uniform rule across all of college hockey on overtime. No reason for the winner to not get an extra point. Yea I realize they aren't in the same conference but I think they should keep track of overall points not as well as conf as these ot games against non conf teams should affect pairwise

I'm just fine with having it be a tie after 5 minutes and having the 3x3 or shootout be for practice.

How would you work the 3x3 into the PWR? Historically, a win is a win. But now we have three types of wins - a 5x5 win and a 3x3 win, and a shootout win. (and maybe a tie, who knows).

When the Powers That Be decide on how each should be treated, then I believe the NCAA will adopt it across the board.
----------------------
One man's opinion. I hate the shootout. Play a tie after the 3x3. So then we have
3 points for a win playing 5x5
2 points for a win playing 3x3
1 point for a loss playing 3x3 or a tie.

Winning pct = total points earned / (games played x 3)
In H2H a 5x5 win trumps a 3x3 win. Ditto on CoP.

Standings would look like
GP....W5....W3....L5....L3....T....PTS....Win%

Pts = W5*3 + W3*2 + L3 + T

If you win 34 games playing 5x5, that's 102 points. If you win every game in 3x3, that's only 68 points.

This should put the onus on trying to win 5x5 and not go into the extra session.

Feel free to shoot holes in it.

I really like this idea. Generally don't like ties though and it is very rare you go through a 3 x 3 ot without a winner but If they don't want to do the shootout they could make the ot periods longer as well. No way somebody doesn't score in a 10 min 3 x 3. Your idea is much more likely though and I would be happier with that then having no extra points for non conf 3 x 3 winners

1. I am fine with a tie.
2. I don't like change, so 2 pts for a win just seems correct.
3. A tie should be half as many points as a win. If 2 teams are equal, they shouldn't be penalized a half a point. Should split points equally and that can't happen with 3.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: 2016-17

Last nights game should be considered a tie. Although I like the 3 on 3, I abhor shoot outs. The 3 on 3 victory is good for bragging rites and that's about it. If a conference wants to use it to award an extra point in conference - that's up to them.

The scoring is uniform NCAA-wide in the old W-L-T system. I think that it's fine to let the leagues test out ways to provide incentives to not tie, although I truly hate the shootout.

Agree, in part. But once you go to a gimmick (3x3 or shootout) to decide a winner, you then need to do something different when awarding points. If you want to award a loser point, you have to make the game points available equal for everyone, hence the 3-2-1-0 structure. BTW, in my proposal, I'd like to see:
5x5 for 60 minutes. 3 points awarded for a winner, 0 for the loser. If tied:
5x5 sudden death OT for 5 minutes. 3 points awarded for a winner, 0 for the loser. If still tied:
3x3 sudden death OT for 5 minutes. 2 points for a winner. 1 point for the loser. If still tied:
Tied. 1 point each. Yea, we're out of balance, but so what? Neither side won.

NO SHOOTOUTS!!!

As an aside, soccer awards 3 pts for a win and 1 for a tie.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: 2016-17

I hope you're right Suze. I think the Beavers were still trying to recover from the travel headache they had Wednesday night. Sounds like their flight from Seattle to Anchorage was delayed 3 hours. They got to their hotel around 130 AM (430 AM Bemidji time) Thursday morning. Nothing like a 19 hour travel day.

Oh well, it is what it is and good teams have to find a way to battle through it.

Sorry, I feel no sympathy for your travel woes. UAA does this stuff for HALF their games.

Not trying to make excuses. I am one who has not complained about the Beavers having to go Alaska as I know the Alaska teams have to do it for every road trip to the lower 48. What bothers me this year is the WCHA Schedule Maker. As I understand it, when a team goes to Alaska, they are supposed to have a bye week or a home series the next weekend. Earlier this year, the Beavers this year went to Fairbanks and the went to Mankato the next weekend. Now they go to Anchorage and then follow it up with a trip to Bowling Green.

At least they got 11 of 12 points on the first trip. We will see if they can get 9 of 12 on this trip.

After next weekend UAA spends TWO weeks in the lower 48, they come home for a weekend and then they spend TWO weeks on the road in the lower 48 again. Nobody else's schedule even begins to compare to the Alaska schools.
