Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

How is BSU on the big ice surface?

Well they dont really play on big ice to often but they did play northern michigan on their olympic ice earlier in the season and tied friday and then won saturday 5-0. So we will just have to see

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

BSU always plays UND tough, so this should be an interesting series, especially with how well the Beavers appear to be playing right now.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

-Air force was ranked 18th when we played them
-Northern Michigan was 21st when we played them on the road
-Huntsville had beat notre dame in notre dame earlier and they swept air force in air force
-Robert Morris is just robert morris and yes they suck

-Yes we have really not played anyone to tough yet but to play four games in a row on the road and not lose and to start the season 7-0-1 in D1 college hockey is tough to do no matter who you play.

Everybody overlooks the CHA. Truth be told, they are very solid programs for what they have been dealt. Can you imagine trying to recruit solid players to your program when your in a 4-team conference, play mediocre teams all season long, with minimal exposure.

After watching Robert Morris Friday night, I would consider them a solid hockey program. Anything can happen when a team can come out of the CHA, and beat a WCHA program. The recruiting power is heavily uneven between the two.

Alabama Huntsville - 3
#8 Notre Dame - 1

Robert Morris - 5
Alaska Anchorage - 3, Didn't UAA beat #2 UND?

Niagra - 1
#6 Michigan - 2

Huntsville sweeping Air Force

Niagra - 2
#3 Cornell - 3 IN OT

Robert Morris - 8
#20 Quinnipiac - 5

Looking at just a few weeks of games, you can't overlook any of these teams.

Historically, BSU has not performed well on Olympic Ice. They did get three points out of Northern Michigan this year, but before that, I believe they only have two other wins, and that was two or three years ago when they swept Mankato in Mankato. I could be wrong on that though, but I do know those two wins were the first in something like 15 games on Olympic Ice for the Beavers.

I don't think you can really compare records and who has played who in this year. The Gophers have played North Dakota, Wisconsin, Denver and Anchorage to a 3-4-1 record. They are the premier program in the State of Minnesota and have always got the top notch recruits. But talent alone doesn't always win you games.

Bemidji on the other hand, has been able to use last year's Frozen Four run and use it as a confidence spring board into this year. They are 7-0-1 and one of two unbeaten teams in the nation. You play the hand you are dealt and BSU has played it well, even though people try to put down the teams they have played. While they may not have the top notch recruits that the Gophers have, I think they play a lot more like a team than the Gophers do. In that team philosophy, they lay it all out there for each other, and I do believe their hard work overcomes any talent they may be lacking. They all buy into the philosophy of Beaver Hockey, and when you have 20 players all doing the same thing, it bodes well for the team.

What to expect this weekend, I don't know. I really feel the Beavers have a good shot right now. The key for them will be not to get caught up in the whole "this is the Gophers, lets make a statement" and to play their system. If they do that, there is no reason they can't come out of Minneapolis with some points. If they lose though, it will not be the end of the world, just two games in a 34 game season. No matter how you slice it, somewhere between 9-0-1 and 7-2-1 after 10 games will look nice for the Green and White (yes, I would love for it to be 9-0-1 ;) )

BSU was 0-2 last year (both at Minnesota State) on the 200x100, 0-3 two years ago (0-2 @ SCSU and 0-1 @ CC), but figured it out three years ago 3-0 (2-0 @ MSU and 1-0 @ CC) before this years 1-0-1 weekend at NMU.

Yes, BSU had never won a 200x100 game before that in their D-I era (0-19-1 in fact, with the tie vs. Minnesota State in November 2002), but what does even last year have to do with this years team?

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Ok my comments on here have been pretty Homerish. I realize the gophers players and coaches wont take the Beavers lightly. The Gopher fans on the other hand I am not so sure. Seem pretty cocky to me.

I do know that I have followed College Hockey for 25 years now and that this Beaver team deserves their current #7 USCHO ranking, I do Know that the Palace is in Grand Forks ND and not in the TC. I was a big gopher fan for many years and still believe their style of hockey is the most fun to watch. I remember the years of Bonin and Brink (great Bemidji alum and gopher walk on) the years of Stauber (you have Alex who?) etc....

So talk your trash and we will see, because I also know that if the Beavers were to be swept this weekend I wont go into hiding like a fudge packer fan, I will give credit where it is due.

The real question is where will all the gopher fans be when they lose again?

There is no such thing as former Gopher fans, I don't buy it.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

As a proud BSU alum who normally bleeds maroon and gold (on every other weekend) ..... I am happy to say one more BSU sweep is in the works..... I just hope and pray the gophers make a contest of it

You never know you could be right. It feels strange to have Bemidji come into our rink as a favorite with a undefeated record and a number 7 ranking. But if the Gophers were to get untracked I can hear it now....OVER RATED ! :D

Well, the COULD happen, but right now..... with Don at the helm...... the only over rated team is unfortunatly the Gophers with 13 votes in the USCHO poll...... :D :(

"There is no such thing as former Gopher fans, I don't buy it."

True story started as a fan of the Dogs in the mid 80's as they were the only team on television up here, was very thankfull to get Fox North and followed the Maroon and Gold religously. Went to the old ralph to watch the Gophs and susies, once took an obstructed view seat at old Mariucci just to watch the gopher sioux game live, cheered on a GREAT Gophers team when Bemidji's Andy Brink played with Bonin, and still remembers how I felt when Mike Legg turned in to houdini and screwed a great run.....

I have also followed the Beavers since 1991 watching many Dll champions, and obviously will root for them over the gophs from here on out.

Looking back it seems UND/Bemidji games were low scoring and often only a one goal difference. Seems like they always play well in big games. Almost expect Bemidji to shut out the Gophers in at least one of the games.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Just saying, lets not get too cocky with this game just yet.

But once the game starts the guys can get as cocky as they want. Beavers can get intense and things might even get a little messy towards the end of a period. If they start shutting down the slot towards the end of a period and there's a lot of pad saves, watch out! Because that’s means something is definitely fishy. But hey to be honest, I don't have a problem with that. As long as at some point they leave the slot wide open, that’s all the guys really care about anyway. The bottom line is we have to score no matter what. It’s another weekend and the guys need to score!!!

Anything you can do we can do better! (hint: it's not something I expect BSU to say to the Sioux anytime soon, if ever).

Gophers sweep. While yawning. And saying Sam who?

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Lets get real here. Any Beaver fans saying that the Gophers "have no idea what their up against" doesn't follow college hockey.

Exactly! I’ve heard rumors the Beavers have a tendency to expose themselves up the middle. So I hope we’re determined to press in hard and just keep pounding that crease. If we can get a man steadily moving up the slot that’s always effective. And I also heard that Beavers like to watch their end and not let others enter unmolested. They’re really good at reading exactly when guys are entering their end and believe me they can put up a little resistance. I've seen it first hand.

Of course the main thing is to just to ignore that, be aggressive, flood the crease and score. Then if we continue to stay deep in the zone as long as possible, my guess is the Beavers will give in to the pressure. That’s why I think it’s so critical that the man in front keeps his stick ready and stays near the open slot. This is so important! You don’t want to be surprised when all of a sudden a huge shot comes from the point, which by the way often happens when the point isn’t covered properly. Don’t get me wrong, I’m ok with a little stick play too. But I also hope the guys don’t waste a lot of time by getting too fancy with the stick.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Seems to me playing the Badgers was a perfect tuneup for playing the Beavers. I like Minnesota's chances.

Innuendo at its finest?
