Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

That sounds like Frank and Wooger from last night. They mentioned the age difference quite a few times once UMN was down by four goals. Funny, they didn't mention it the night before when UMN was winning. ;) :)

Thanks for the edit, Brian. I only added the second part as a mistaken attempt at rationality. :D

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Bemidji has a good club . They are well coached and take advantage of thier opponents mistakes. The Gophers are in all honesty not that good of a team this year. Maybe as the year progresses they will get better . I havent seen anything that would tell me they are gonna be anything better than a 500 team at best. I hope they change thier direction and if they dont people will start calling for Lucias head but at some point its not all the coaches fault there has to be accountablility by the players themselves

So is BSU that good or are the Gophers that bad?:D

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Birkholz was EASILY the fastest player on the ice this past weekend. NO CONTEST. The guy has afterburners built into his skates. He could skate the length of the ice twice in the same time that Read could skate from the red line to the blue line. ;) :p :D

You know how in Superman, Superman flies around the Earth really fast to go back in time and save Lois Lane? You probably thought it was just a movie and couldn't really happen. You'd be wrong though. Josh Birkholz does that as part of his daily morning calisthenics. Every morning at precisely 6:37:43 he saves Lois Lane by going back in time.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

Does Birkholz not play a lot? I thought tDon rolled 4 lines? He must not, if this comparison were to have any merit.

He tries, but with all the penalties this weekend and the injury to Flynn, the fourth line got significantly reduced PT.

I have no idea who is faster between Read and Birkholz - I'd love to see a race, both with and without the puck. I think a lot of younger, speedier players have been able to use just their speed against their opponents and come to rely on it alone. When they get to a higher level (like say DI), it's no longer enough and they need to develop their game - I think Read has. I hope Birkholz does. Some former Gophers never really did.

I apologize Gopher fans. I didn't realize that my innocent comment about Read being the fastest player on the ice would cause such backlash.

I really don't think anyone was up in arms, but unless you've seen Birkholz open it up why leave a comment that infers you know there's no way he's that fast? Just sayin... :p

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

You gotta get on base for the speed to matter.

I don't think most Gopher fans are too bent out of shape on the whole Birkholtz speed argument. It is just that when someone makes a statement that one player is fast, and another counters that they think a different player is faster, who plays better or is more noticeable shouldn't be part of an arguement on speed. The question is, if you put the two on one end of the ice, yelled "go", who makes it to the other end first? That is the fastest skater. Birkholtz has pull away speed. On the couple breaks he's had this year, he's left the D in the dust (and not a situation where the D was caught flat-footed). He has yet to do anything with it. I don't know if Read is that fast. I don't remember either of these players really doing that this weekend so I don't know how you say who is faster. Read was quick on the puck and knew what to do with it when he got there. I thought the comparison of Gomez and Mauer was a good one. Mauer being better (therefore more noticeable) doesn't make him faster. I would venture that most frustration from fans isn't arrogance about their guy "has to be fastest", so much as frustration with a less than logical counter argument that seems to be, "Read has more goals/is more noticeable so he must be faster". By that regard, Patrick White is a blur compared to Birkholtz.

I don't know why you guys are fighting about this, Travis Novak is faster than both of them.:p

Is that why the Gopher players are so much younger than the Beavers?

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

BSU's Chris McKelvie (#23) is faster than Matt Read is. You don't notice it as much because of the role that he plays. McKelvie is the center on the checking line...don't get to turn on the jets very often, becuase it's not his job.

Tom Serratore told me once this season that McKelvie has "high end NHL speed"...Read is right behind him though.

Point is, everyone has their job to do.

MacQueen seems to be VERY fast as well..that or the Gopher player who got burnt was extremely slow. Announcers commented on replay of the break-away goal something like..."MacQueen looked like he was shot out of a cannon!"

I was impressed with BSU and feel they have a great chance to do well in the WCHA. They're certainly not cupcakes!

Minnesota looks great at times, and then other times they look horrible. Their PP is fun to watch when they "click", but the sloppy neutral ice play and turnovers kill them almost every series. UND has problems with this at times as well. This coming weekend series in Denver should ve VERY interesting, especially without Genoway.

Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere

I think that both teams last night weren't very good. It was slow ugly hockey last night which is NOT indicative of how Minnesota plays. But I am hoping they don't figure things out until Monday of NEXT week (lol).

Birkholz and Budish are good young players. Anyone who's saying they are not hasn't been watching. They will only get better with time... as all freshman do.

Kangas must have been out sick Sunday night because the guy in his jersey sucked. It certainly wasn't the same guy that shoved it up Wisconsins back side. Again... I'll let him play like that next weekend.

Give Bemidji credit, they capitalized on Gopher miscues... because without the Gophs turning it over 100 times, they would have certainly been shaved Beavers. 3 pipes and bad bounces beat the Gophs... But Bemidji isn't even close to the talent level that Minnesota is.... but that said.... neither was Michigan Tech when they beat the Bulldogs on Friday night. When you let crappy teams hang around long enough... you get what you deserve and thats what happened both in Minneapolis and in Duluth.

Last question. Is Larson ok after that hit. Yikes that could have been a bad one.

It is hard to say what BSU would do in the WCHA when you only see them play a couple games a year and you only have to get up for a few big games a year. The WCHA is a grind and wears teams out and next year we will see if they are for real or not. Good game last night by BSU and they desreved to win.

I think I've watched every Gopher game that's been televised on FCS this season. When is he planning on opening it up? I'll be sure to tune in. ;) :p

Regardless, Birkholz is the FASTEST skater in the NCAA. Anyone that argues otherwise is obviously a dolt. :)

Except for Genoway, he's faster than Birkholz, even if he does have a concussion.

Birkholz is fast but I don't think I care that much. Now the standard is competing for home ice and I'm not sure I can live with that.
