Beanpot LXIX: Live and In Person!

Agree that BC played its butt off and props to them for not just mailing it in, especially when they were down by two. OTOH, nobody expected a freshman who hadn't played a minute until Devon Levi left for the Olympics to stand on his head.

Typical Beanpot. Great to see the big, loud crowd.

Glad to see the crowd was a good one. I was curious as to how many people would show up.

I was watching the NESN pre-game video and so many of the clips were from OT winning goals and I feel, with these new rules, that won't happen any more.

How will they determine who is the home team for Monday? Is it a coin flip?

First round attendance was 15,535. Reports of the Beanpot's decline and descent into irrelevancy have been greatly exaggerated, despite the NCAA's best efforts to devalue and demean it.

This year was always going to be tough to predict. I didn't know what to expect. But that's definitely a good, solid number.

Very good numbers in attendance and pretty good games to boot. As mentioned they should absolutely have the Women's Beanpot Final at 5pm then then Men's Beanpot final to follow. That would showcase both games. Men's Consolation games can be played at 1pm.

Attendance was likely buoyed by pent up demand - and I also wonder if the Super Bowl not being the day before helped? The few first Mondays pre-pandemic were all in the 12-13k range. Will be Interesting to see where it goes in the next few years.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the Super Bowl. I'd say that this Monday's attendance could be affected but since neither the Patriots nor Tom Brady are in it, probably not.

The most fun about this year's Beanpot is that, as of this morning, none of the top three teams in the Hockey East standings are in it.

Harvard and NE have never played each other in the Final.
Conversely, BU and BC have never played in a consolation game which is only logical given that the first thing has never happened.
I know this has been gone over before, not having a Beanpot game take 2-3 OT's to resolve seems very very wrong.

Attendance the last couple years before the COVID cancellation had been weak. Entire sections were empty in the upper levels for both games. That is no exaggeration.

It was great to see the BU, Northeastern and BC student sections filled from top-to-bottom. And they were loud. Often vulgar, but loud.

The old cliche "Ten Thousand Men of Harvard" does not not apply to the Beanpot. The Harvard crowd is embarrassingly small, has been for years, and was again this year. The one benefit of it is that the Jumbotron can't go back-and-forth showing fans of each team for meaningless reactions because they couldn't find enough Harvard fans to put on it.
Will there be ANY Harvard students at the championship game if they couldn't be bothered to show up for a game that means something?

I find it interesting how men's fans that don't like the consolation game almost always suggest that the women's championship game be played at 5 pm as an undercard for the men's championship. Never mind that the women's Beanpot has stood on its own since its first tournament in 1979 and maybe the women like their championship game being the main draw. Furthermore, there is the matter of scheduling in years like this year when the women's tournament starts the week before the men's tournament and, like the men, the problem of what to do with the consolation game. Also, what about the fans of the women's tournament who want to attend the championship game? How are they going to get tickets for the championship game? Where would they be assigned seating? Not to mention the much higher prices of the men's ticket's.

The Superbowl has been mentioned as an attendance suppressant for the past several years. I have a spreadsheet tracking the attendance with notes regarding each Superbowl that has been the day before a Beanpot round. You can look below or at the image I posted two years ago with tickets prices.

Agree that BC played its butt off and props to them for not just mailing it in, especially when they were down by two.
Harvard was down by three and didn't "mail it in", so why do you think BC might "mail it in" when down by two? This season there have been 636 times in which a team has taken a 2 goal lead: 46 times the team trailing has come back to win, 23 times the team trailing has tied the game and another 43 times the team trailing has tied the game up before losing. That's 17.6% of the time which the trailing team was able to come back down by 2 goals.

...The old cliche "Ten Thousand Men of Harvard" does not apply to the Beanpot. The Harvard crowd is embarrassingly small, has been for years, and was again this year. The one benefit of it is that the Jumbotron can't go back-and-forth showing fans of each team for meaningless reactions because they couldn't find enough Harvard fans to put on it...

Actually, both Harvard fans were there. Also, all of six (6) members of the Harvard University Band. What an embarrassment and a huge come down from the Billy Cleary days when Harvard had a respectable and loyal fan base--many with no connection to the university. Sadly, the "Love Story" era is long gone.
