Beanpot LXIX: Live and In Person!

Harvard was down by three and didn't "mail it in", so why do you think BC might "mail it in" when down by two?...

I was responding directly to a BC poster regarding a BC-specific post, and the context involved the unprecedented BC losing streak. Not unheard of for a team in those circumstances just giving up the ghost and riding out the remainder of the season. Agree that H didn't mail it in either, but that game was not germane to the post to which I responded.

Actually, both Harvard fans were there. Also, all of six (6) members of the Harvard University Band. What an embarrassment and a huge come down from the Billy Cleary days when Harvard had a respectable and loyal fan base--many with no connection to the university. Sadly, the "Love Story" era is long gone.

It really is sad. Harvard has a solid program, and plays good hockey.
Every Beanpot game for quite awhile must seem like an away game for the Crimson.

BTW, on attendances, 2014-20, a lot of those numbers would be "announced" attendance rather than actual attendance.

There was a time that the schools (well, at least three of them) could use Beanpot tickets as a way to raise additional funds from alumni to guarantee tickets. I hope those days return.

I find it interesting how men's fans that don't like the consolation game almost always suggest that the women's championship game be played at 5 pm as an undercard for the men's championship. Never mind that the women's Beanpot has stood on its own since its first tournament in 1979 and maybe the women like their championship game being the main draw. Furthermore, there is the matter of scheduling in years like this year when the women's tournament starts the week before the men's tournament and, like the men, the problem of what to do with the consolation game. Also, what about the fans of the women's tournament who want to attend the championship game? How are they going to get tickets for the championship game? Where would they be assigned seating? Not to mention the much higher prices of the men's ticket's.

Sean

Would you feel better if the women's title game got top billing every other year instead? Or do you actually like that the women's Beanpot is played in front of absolutely nobody? Maybe let them play Tuesday night at the Garden in front of absolutely nobody. It ain't our job to figure out the logistics of a women's/men's title night combo other to suggest that maybe it should be looked into. You don't think the women would like to play at the Garden?

What to do with the consolation game? Throw it in the garbage where it belongs. Or move it to on campus.

Bingo. Personally I would like the women game to grow and by playing the 5pm it would get more eyes than their title game as Mathews. No one cares about the consolation game.

And with the new OT rules it's more feasible than ever before. You know the game will be over by a certain time. I'm sure NESN could cover it just like they do on semifinal Monday. Rotate who gets nightcap every year. Wouldn't bother me. Just imagine a year where the men's and women's title games feature the same two schools. Would make for an entertaining night and a stage that women's college hockey never gets.

The women's Beanpot isn't played in front of absolutely nobody, which you would know if you attended one. Or else you are denigrating the fans who attend it as being nobodies.

NESN already shows the women's Beanpot on NESN+. In fact, this year they showed all four games.

Forgive me Sean. You are correct, the women's Beanpot is in fact NOT played in front of 0 fans. Thanks for taking that so literally. I apologize to the 1,110 people who attended the title game.

That's the paid attendance, I was there. Have seen 300 games at Matthews, many in the 1980s from the ice with just 200 people in the stands half of whom were in the dog pound. So I am a good judge of capacity. If there were 600 people in attendance I would be surprised.

An elderly alumnus from a Beanpot school is settling into his seat—one of the best in the TD Garden--for the championship game of the Beanpot College Hockey Tournament. The seat next to him is empty. As he sits down, a young lady--a stranger--comes by and asks if the empty seat is taken. "No," he says, "the seat will be empty tonight." "This is incredible," replied the young lady. "Who in their right mind would buy a super-expensive seat like this for the Beanpot and not use it?"

The old alum says, "Well actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Beanpot we haven't been to together since we met as students back in the day."
"Oh, that’s so sad" says the young lady, obviously moved, “especially since it’s Valentine’s Day. But couldn't you find someone else--a relative or friend, or even a neighbor--to come here with you tonight?”

The gentleman then sighs, shakes his head and replies, "Nope, they're all at the wake."

And that, boys and girls, is why the Beanpot is special.

I think you post this every year. And I smile and laugh every time. May I steal this?

A ho hum 3-1 win coming for BU. Although I am rooting for the shootout just to emphasize how ridiculous that would be.

The only thing I'm happy about with my team being on the wrong end of the score is that it wasn't decided by an idiotic shootout.

BTW, attendance was 17,850 (sellout), which tied the all-time record set in 2020, and I'm guessing more than a few got in "unofficially." Official total 33,385, which is the most for both rounds that I can remember. So, the Beanpot is apparently more popular than it has ever been.

Coming off a pandemic (am I allowed to say that?) I guess it's not that surprising people want to get back at things. I just wasn't sure about the # of people still being hesitant about being around big crowds. Now we'll see how the HE semis and title game do. Those have been in a downward trend over the years. However, if you end up with say UMass, BU, UConn and NU/UML/PC that will hopefully draw well. Especially UMass and UConn (who would be making first appearance). Those schools should bring big crowds.

While overall I guess I’m happy with it - Northeastern fan turnout quantity was excellent, but quality was very poor. Maybe 1/5th of them cared about the game and knew the chants. I guess fan base growth needs to start somewhere, but I’m not sure this is the way to do it.

I wouldn’t count on considerable northeastern student section turnout for conference tournament games. It was fairly poor for the 2019 finals if I recall correctly, but they would need a significant shift in play to make it that far this year anyway.
