BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

In light of that play, I was surprised BC's 4th goal was allowed. I've seen that called 2 minutes on the skater in the NHL, so I thought at a minimum, they'd wave the goal off.
Also was surprised that goal wasn't waved off due to goaltender interference.
My initial reaction was that the puck was in so much earlier than the collision. I usually see refs let that stand but I can see it being called either way I guess.

Overall, BC was just too fast for Cornell, outside of the Big Red's stars. They looked like a team playing its first game. Interesting to see if they catch up at all tomorrow.
I was expecting Cornell to start making it closer as the game went on but as time went by BC really started to impose its will. Tomorrow will be interesting.

I just watched the highlight reel and this team looks amazing. The speed to get behind and past defenders - with and without the puck. The passing and shooting was superb. This against what is a very fast Cornell team. I don't know what the whole game looked like, but the highlights are scary for those rooting for other teams. Wow.

Just watched the third period of the second game. BC is so fast. Honestly, their defensive play on the penalty kill opens up so much because of their speed. Kate Leary's goal, the sixth one, was a thing of beauty, an end-to-end rush. It's still early, but if BC can put on that kind of performance consistently, they are going to extremely tough to beat.

Yup, that's the one. I remember when I first saw I said out loud, "Holy s*&t." That was her second of the game. BC looks to be getting very balanced scoring. Imagine what they can do when Capizzano is fully healthy again.

And Kaliya Johnson hasn't played yet either. Embarrassment of riches.

Thoughts about the B team's 4-1 win at Providence:

* It was even more of a B-team than you think given the five who were missing for 4 Nations: Johnson and Wedell both didn't dress for the game. Defensive pairings were Miano/Bender and Flanagan/Kickham, and they looked very tired by the end.
* Of the three remaining lines (Field / Anastos/ Capizzano, Leary / Sullivan / Kent, Grieves / McLean / Doherty), it was the Grieves / McLean / Doherty line that really stepped it up. Obviously, Grieves got her two goals in the first period, the first on a great strip and breakaway, the second on a one-timer off a nice pass from Doherty, but that line was the one that maintained most intensity to the end. It's also the line that's been stable since the start of the season (they occasionally lend Doherty to a higher line, but they always get her back) and it showed in the crispness of their passing. Great night for all those kids.
* The Field / Anastos / Capizzano line was solid in front of the Providence net, a bit uncoordinated getting to it. Capizzano looked almost back to her normal speed but I don't think she's 100% quite yet. Same for Leary / Sullivan / Kent. Both those lines managed a goal each, but they were scrappy, not the thing of beauty that both of Grieves's were.
* A sign of how world-turned-upside-down the BC play was: of our presumed stars left, Field, Anastos, Capizzano, Bender, all of them were on at best even +/-. Field was on -1.
* Miano and Flanagan are both emerging as serious weapons. Miano is a physically courageous defenseman and took more of an aggressive role tonight than previously. Flanagan continues to have an uncanny ability to be in just the right place to scoop up a missed pass on the forward line and get it up the ice with a burst of speed.
* Did I mention they looked tired by the end? Bender in particular looked tired. The Providence goal at 15:15 in the third happened because she lost her balance, and on taking that penalty with 30 seconds left in the game she looked genuinely worried that she'd hurt the Providence player.
* Katie Burt stepped up her game another level. Some great glove saves on screened shots.
* Knowing how good our fourth line can be will be a big boost to the team come the postseason. Even if they don't score, they can safely be put on the ice against almost anyone. If we have a good tournament run, I think we'll be looking back to tonight as one of the reasons.

Nice place on the USCHO poll.
Keep the eye on the prize!
I hope that the team takes this as motivation to play like they deserve it every minute of every game. They are going to have a massive target on their backs. I can't remember the last time an eastern team was ranked #1.

This is the first time BC has had a team other than men's hockey ranked #1 in a poll since football in 1940.
