Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

This is a sure bet. The news media is not journalism, it is entertainment and the Disney Rule of Entertainment is: latch on to the most familiar narrative and recapitulate it. Don't drown in depth or introduce ambiguity. Above all don't lose your key demographic -- your job is to sell cars and beer, and the way to do that is hold those eyeballs long enough that the ads can be implanted.

Yep, it's exasperating but it's the reality of journalism today.

I'm going to have to check out citizen four as handy mentions

Have tickets to Suicide Squad Thursday. My expectations are set appropriately. All I care about is Harley Quinn. If they nail that character I'll leave the theater happy. The rest I couldn't care less about.

Yeah I got tickets Thursday as well for me and the GF. My expectations since it was announced were that it would be a good summer movie without much depth but lots of explosions. Give me that and I am happy :)

Some DC fanboys have actually started a petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes over the poor reviews of Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad. They really have no clue how movie reviews work, and definitely no idea how a site like RT works since all it does is collect the reviews, run it through a formula and spit out a result. It isn't like RT has any influence on what the critics say.

I heard the uncut edition of Batman vs. Superman is much better. Fills in the plot cracks.

Rumors are - whether they're to be believed or not - that the movie went through reshoots because of how BvS was received and that the changes were to its detriment. If so, it'll get an Ultimate Edition release just like BvS did, and that'll make for the good version.

It isnt true, and many of the people who started that rumor backed off it since then. (and pretty much everyone involved in the reshoots called it for the BS it was)

The UE of BvS is much better but really it will only matter if you either A) want to see the Superman story (which they butchered in the Theatrical Cut) and B) you either like or dont downright hate the Theatrical Cut.

As for the fanboys, I ignore them as much as I ignore Rottentomatoes. The only critic I care about is myself. :) If I like the movie great, if I dont...well unless I outright hate it I wont pay it a second thought. Its a flipping movie.

The only critic I trusted is now dead.

As for Suicide Squad, since I know just about nothing concerning the story/characters (other than the Joker, obviously), just entertain me, and be really *ed up in doing so. I want at least 2-3 moments of me muttering to myself "what in the actual f*?" in awe.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Even in reviews that aren't great, the praise for Margot Robbie (Harley) Will Smith (Deadshot) and Jared Leto (Joker) is off the charts. People are even reluctantly saying Jai Courtney does a good job. The issue is that they only had six weeks to write the script and then when BvS was panned the studio panicked and ordered a bunch of reshoots that changed the film. What I have read/seen is that the suicide squad is awesome but Suicide Squad is not. Even critics who don't like it think this needs a sequel (or even a frachise) because the cast is just that good. I'm planning to see for myself tomorrow night.

For general specifics, if that makes sense, I've heard via local radio shows:

The Joker isn't in it enough.
Margot Robbie nails it.
It's boring, not a lot of action, given the potential.
Even when the Joker IS in it, he's rather bland, doesn't reach full nutzoid (although I'm pretty sure everyone, including me, will be at least somewhat comparing Ledger's Joker to Leto's Joker).

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

The Joker was never going to be in it much...he is a side story and not part of the Squad.

I couldn't care less if it's, "nutso". For me it's become cliched to add shock value to a movie. It's a similar movement when movies tried to capitalize on Scream and later Blair Witch. Meh - give me great settings, dialogue, character development, production and depending upon the genre action, drama, suspense, SFX, etc. Brent I think you've become a "OMGZ!!" movie addict and the first step to recovery is acceptance. :D

I disagree. However, given the nature of the characters in SS, I would expect it to have some WTeff moments.

Some of the movies I recently watched are far from from the ZOMGZ! type, and I really enjoyed them. ;)
