Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

I posted this on Facebook:

"So my girlfriend and I saw Ghostbusters...for the love of Gozer why the hell was that piece of crap made?? It is in the top five worst movies I have ever paid to see. There was zero redeeming qualities to it, no laughs, the cameos were pathetic, the story was terrible and the villain served no purpose. Your know a movie stinks when the best part was cut out and put in the credits...screw you Paul Feig."

I went in expecting maybe a 3 out of 10...it gets zero. No hyperbole, the movie was a complete and total miss. Everyone was miscast (especially MacKinnon who I wish had been killed off her acting was so terrible and off putting) and outside the very last cameo the entire cast was mailing it in.

No, not really. I don't care if Handy liked it or not. Dan Barreiro (local radio personality) liked it. Rotten Tomatoes score is still pretty good. Besides, he hated the best part of the whole film. Kate McKinnon was awesome. I would go again just to watch her performance. If you hated her it's no wonder you hated the film.

My personal guess is the bile was so worked up in his system that there was no way the film could meet even the 3 out of 10 requirement that he set up. It was doomed from the start. I went in with 0 expectations (I didn't even like the first two films to be honest) and I left happy.

Your guess would be wrong but hey go on with your bad self  I do this moron thing called thinking you should try it some time.

But lets say you were right...my girlfriend chose the movie, she was pumped to see it, she hated it almost as much as I did. (the difference was she liked the cameos I hated them) How are you going to explain away her dislike Dr. Freudy Doo?

It is great you and the critics liked it (and i mean that seriously, we should all enjoy the movies we pay for) it lasted one week and then no one saw it because the audience didnt. It was 5th in its second week behind Ice Age...when all is said and done it is barely going to be profitable and will be seen as a failure by Sony. On nostalgia alone it should have been a big movie (especially with a high critics score) but no one liked it because it just wasnt that good. It wasnt sexism, or anger or anything, the movie just didnt do much. If you are going to reboot a classic, you cant half *** it.

I think my girlfriend said it best...what was the story? Who were they fighting? How did we get to the conclusion? (and what was with the stupid Homeland Security/Mayor story that served zero purpose) The movie was basically Kirstin Wiig playing her usual character, Melissa McCarthy playing her usual character and MacKinnon talking monotonally and making bad jokes. (oh but hey she danced to an 80s song so...yeah) Leslie Jones was good though. The hamfisting of putting in elements of the original movie (like using phrases from the song, the way the logo came about, Slimer, The Marshmallow Man) needed to go too. If you are starting fresh start fresh. Problem was they had no idea what they were doing so they put in stuff like that hoping the old school fans would dig it...I didnt and neither did they from what I can tell.

We agree to disagree Scoobs :)

Indignation - (saw it in Utah at the Film Festival this winter) finally releases on July 29th. I cannot say enough good things about this movie. I hope it's a huge success.

Never heard of it...whats it about?

Based on a Philip Roth novel. No, I never read any of his stuff. Amazon has the synopsis of the book here.

It is 1951 in America, the second year of the Korean War. A studious, law-abiding, intense youngster from Newark, New Jersey, Marcus Messner, is beginning his sophomore year on the pastoral, conservative campus of Ohio’s Winesburg College. And why is he there and not at the local college in Newark where he originally enrolled? Because his father, the sturdy, hard-working neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad -- mad with fear and apprehension of the dangers of adult life, the dangers of the world, the dangers he sees in every corner for his beloved boy.

As the long-suffering, desperately harassed mother tells her son, the father’s fear arises from love and pride. Perhaps, but it produces too much anger in Marcus for him to endure living with his parents any longer. He leaves them and, far from Newark, in the midwestern college, has to find his way amid the customs and constrictions of another American world.

Indignation, Philip Roth’s twenty-ninth book, is a story of inexperience, foolishness, intellectual resistance, sexual discovery, courage, and error. It is a story told with all the inventive energy and wit Roth has at his command, at once a startling departure from the haunted narratives of old age and experience in his recent books and a powerful addition to his investigations of the impact of American history on the life of the vulnerable individual.

There's a dialog scene in it between the main character and the Dean of the school that is awesome.

Two other films I'm planning on.

Equity. The film I wanted to see in Utah but it wasn't playing the weekend I was there.
Cafe Society. Woody Allen's new film.

Did anyone go see "The Killing Joke" last night? It was a Fathom Events limited run. The encore is tonight and I'm thinking of going. Mark Hamill as the Joker is awesome.

I ordered the disc, so figured I'd skip the theater for it.

I want to go but doubt I will...

We went. The movie was fantastic and there were interviews before and after that were very interesting.

One thing about Ghostbusters - I'm not so sure the nostalgia thing matters. At least not for me even as someone who was the target market for the original and saw it at least 3 times in the theater. For this one the idea seeing it in the theater never excited me. I'll watch it but on video.

When we saw Star Trek Beyond this weekend we were the oldest people in the theater by at least 20 years.

Unless it's an art house, the median age in theaters these days is really young (which explains why the cast of movies typically resembles a freshman dorm). It is apparently an excuse to get away from the folks so you can bang, which is nice because it means some things never change.

Cinema Paradiso:

Couldn't get into it. The final scene was a really good one, but other than that? Meh. I suppose it's worth watching, but there's nothing special about it.
