10 Cloverfield Lane. A minus. Really enjoyed it.

Please do not post spoilers for people who didn't see it.

There are some videos on YouTube that go through the movie and explain some of the connections to the first movie and how this really is a sequel to Cloverfield. Lot of subtle little details that I missed when I watched.

The Monuments Men. Hmm. This movie suffered terribly from not knowing whether it was to be a comedy or something more serious. Matt Damon was good but the rest of the cast looked and felt out of place to the point where the movie looked like a spoof even though it was telling a true story. I'd give this movie a c-. And they should provided more exposition or an epilogue because even when they have Clooney talking with the president it just seemed so far fetched that this occurred. Spielberg could have saved this movie and done it right I think

The Martian:

The science used to explain the movie wasn't at all baffling, contrary to some of the reviews I've seen, except for one piece: somehow they defied natural law and allowed Sean Bean to live.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Money Monster. This felt contrived and in the end was a hot mess. I thought the antagonist's motives and execution were very poorly written, I didn't like Clooney in his role, the directing was terrible, and during the last 15 or so minutes of the movie I couldn't wait for it to end.

The Conjuring 2. Whether or not you believe there are spirits powerful to move objects etc. (I do not) I often enjoy a good haunting and this was no different. Unlike MM I thought the cast was well utilized, the movie was crisp, creepy in all the right places and was well worth the watch.

Spotlight:

Very well done. I was going to rip Keaton's inconsistent Boston accent, but after reading up on imdb, apparently he was quite accurate in the portrayal of the reporter.

I initially thought this movie was a money-grab, due the the subject matter, but after it won a couple awards, figured I'd give it a watch. I'm glad I did. Definitely recommend.

Just saw another new trailer for Ghostbusters. Had the funniest line I've heard yet. Wish they wouldv'e saved it for the movie.

Antarctica: A Year on Ice

Pretty good doc about what it's like to survive and work at the McMurdo (US) research station down there, especially the "winter-overs".

That is high on my list right now. Probably gonna watch it this week.

I don't know if this film has been mentioned in this thread but my wife and I watched Following on Netflix last night. Spectacularly good film. It apparently is considered Christopher Nolan's first movie. About 20 years old. It's basically a film noir suspense film that involves about four characters. I won't give any details because I will undoubtedly include a spoiler or two.

It is somewhat confusing for the first half hour because of the way Nolan tells the story, but stick with it. Terrific ending. Only about 70 minutes long so even if you end up hating it, you haven't wasted much of your life.

This is one of my favorite movies. I think it's Nolan's best movie, though Memento is also great and Inception isn't bad.

One thing I thought was hilarious, and curious, was the Batman symbol on one of the apartment doors. This film must have been made a solid 7-8 years before Nolan ever got involved with the Batman franchise.

Wow the ID4 sequel bombed...

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Why are you surprised it sucks? The idea as a whole was stupid, and not stupid in the "action movie shut your mind off" kind of way but in the "we have nothing better so lets just try and see if 1990s nostalgia will get people's money" kind of way. The movie was 2 decades late...it was like MIB3. No one cared for another but lets do it anyways...

They could have played off the unintentional idiocy of the first one by making a self-consciously idiotic but entertaining second one.

The tree was already up; all they had to do was put on the **** ornaments.

And yes, remakes and sequels are lame and lazy, but Hollywood has been lame and lazy since D. W. Griffith said "let's shoot a cautionary tale about a Kenyan Muslim senator!" If you want subtlety and intelligence then you call an indy art studio. If you want the one trillionth retelling of the Three Primary Plots of a kid with Downs (drama) or dangling from a roof (comedy) or a kid with Downs dangling from a roof (thriller), then you call Hollywood. That's all they do, but they do it great.

Don't go to the shoe store if you want pants.

True. But, they made a movie instead. Some of the writing at the movie and TV level has gotten very good and some of the producers etc. fail to see that and insist on running the same formula over and over again.

This is a great time for TV and a terrible time for high budget movies.

There have been a few periods in which high budget Hollywood movies were also good movies: the 30s, the 50s, etc.

This is not one of them.

There are still some movies that are doing good work. It's a small subset but they're out there.
