Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

I finally was bored enough to watch Hobbit Battle of Five Armies...uhhh...well it didnt suck as much as the first two installments.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Saw two A+ movies Sunday: Zootopia and Hail Caesar.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

The family went to see Dory today. All in all it was enjoyable and had nearly as much charm as the first one. I had to get past the first 10-15 minutes which to me were very dull, then it found it's groove, I stopped wanting it to be Nemo, and in the end it was a fun movie with plenty of laughs.

Zootopia was very well done. I like the Breaking Bad reference in a kid's movie.

There were a million adult references, like Disney typically does. The slam on Frozen was beautiful -- my daughter worked for Disney for three years and everyone there is sick to death of it.

To date, this was the best movie about terrorism and civil liberties. No "serious" drama has touched it (though Battlestar Galactica was close).

The 1st season of BSG would be an excellent Poli Sci course on the role of civilian vs. military after the collapse of the government. The book Starship Troopers would be another good course.

Yeah, I liked it too.

Top Spin

Doc on three US teenagers trying to qualify for the table-tennis Olympic team. It's a bit more intense than I thought it would be. The physical training they go through is insane. I've only heard of one of the other players mentioned/shown in the doc (Chris Xu, Canada, and she's RUTHLESS on the table, a much older player, too), and seeing explanations of things, etc really helped me appreciate the movie.

If you're curious about a niche sport, definitely recommend.

Woman In Gold

Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, takes on the Austrian government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family.

Mirren was spectacular (duh) as Altmann, and Ryan Reynolds (yes, the same one you're thinking of) did very well as her lawyer. Based on a true story, and I really enjoyed it.

Saw this in the theater, great great movie.

I'm so happy for Netflix, because many of these smaller/indie movies, I either never hear of, or if I do hear of them, they play at some artsy-fartsy theater/area I have no interest in going to. It takes a LOT for me to go to an actual theater for some blockbuster I want to see. Main reason? Fellow audience members. I like to zone in on a movie.

I like how the people in charge of the new Independence Day movie have it premiering on June 24th. You know, don't wait a week to have it be the Friday of the Independence Day weekend or anything, that would make actual sense. Gotta get it out a week early, because of all the pent-up demand for it 20 years after the first one.

I don't know the schedules of other movies, and the 4th being on a Monday, but that could have something to do with it.

They are giving it the Fant4stic Four treatment - all reviews are embargoed until the movie is released. Odd because that movie is critic-proof. I think we all know it will be a mindless popcorn flick that will require us to turn our brains off for a couple hours and just go with it. No one is expecting Spielberg-level of film brilliance here.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

It is critic proof for a week...the nostalgia for this is not up there with some of the other films that have pulled this maneuver. Plus...it looks absolutely terrible. And I say that as someone that loves the first one.

Did Ghostbusters give up advertising the actual movie? The only ads I've seen for it are promos with the NBA, Progressive, and something else. None of which actually included the actresses or any scenes.

The actresses have been doing a lot of promotion work. They probably got off the trailer BS because of all the ****ing Internet dicks that are having a bolt popping over a movie.

They are no worse than the Social Justice Warriors attacking anyone who dare not like the movie and accusing them of hating women and being misogynistic. Some of us think the movie looks bad that isnt a crime...

Feig knew what he was getting into when he decided to reboot the franchise. People hold Ghostbusters in high esteem. It would be like remaking Back to the Future.

It's not a remake it's a reboot. Nothing they are doing does anything to diminish the original. Reboot and remake are two different things. Hell, Bill Murray is onboard. Dan Akroyd is onboard. That's all I need to know.

Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd likely have financial stakes in the movie. I'm waiting on that movie, if I see the thing it'll only be after reviews are in from the Average Joe and they're well beyond 'Meh.'
