I saw a headline that Melissa McCarthy said of the detractors of the Ghostbusters movie, "Get a friend."

I had somewhat good hopes about this movie, and the trailer sucked arse. And that is usually the best of what the movie has to offer.....

I can't prove it but I have long suspected Hollywood makes movies as terrible as they can just to laugh about the swill they have the power to inflict on the world during their endless spectacular orgies which make Caligula look like a middle school teacher in Duluth and to which I am not invited.

That was an awesome read. Thanks.

Ebert was my favorite writer of all time. He was amazing when he wanted to skewer a movie or actor. The closing paragraph of his review of Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo was the ultimate mic drop in my book.

If you liked that review, his write-up of North is also a classic:

ETA: Here's a list of what The Daily Beast offers as his best burns:

"Was there no one connected with this project who read the screenplay, considered the story, evaluated the proposed film and vomited?"

—from Last Rites review, November 19, 1988

"This is an old idea, beautifully expressed by Wordsworth, who said, 'Heaven lies about us in our infancy.' If I could quote the whole poem instead of completing this review, believe me, we'd all be happier. But I press on."

—from Baby Geniuses review, March 12, 1999

“I will one day be thin, but Vincent Gallo will always be the director of The Brown Bunny.”

—from The Brown Bunny review, September 3, 2004

“Watching Mad Dog Time is like waiting for the bus in a city where you're not sure they have a bus line."

—from Mad Dog Time review, November 29, 1996

"Valentine's Day is being marketed as a Date Movie. I think it's more of a First-Date Movie. If your date likes it, do not date that person again. And if you like it, there may not be a second date."

—from Valentine’s Day review, February 10, 2010

"Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo makes a living cleaning fish tanks and occasionally prostituting himself. How much he charges I'm not sure, but the price is worth it if it keeps him off the streets and out of another movie."

—from Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo review, August 12, 2005

"There is a movie called Fargo playing right now. It is a masterpiece. Go see it. If you, under any circumstances, see Little Indian, Big City, I will never let you read one of my reviews again."

—from Little Indian, Big City review, March 22, 1996

"Battlefield Earth is like taking a bus trip with someone who has needed a bath for a long time. It's not merely bad; it's unpleasant in a hostile way."

—from Battlefield Earth review, May 12, 2000

"If you want to save yourself the ticket price, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and get a kid to start banging pots and pans together. Then close your eyes and use your imagination."

—from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen review, June 23, 2009

"I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it."

—from North review, July 22, 1994

Forgot to mention, I finally saw Trumbo last weekend. It was good, though Hollywood did amp up the post-prison drama with the neighbors just a bit, since in reality Dalton Trumbo moved to Mexico in the 50s.

Kid Poker

Biopic on Daniel Negreanu, professional poker player. Very well done, doesn't really hide his faults/outspoken-ness. Interesting to see how he became successful in that world. One of the best "readers" in the game.*

*There is a story of when he went to a home game with a buddy, and said he'd only play his buddy's cards if his buddy folded before the flop. Yup, played the discards. And he STILL won money, due to his ability to read what the others had and bet accordingly. If you've ever seen him play, it truly is insane.

Janis: Little Girl Blue

Biopic on Janis Joplin. Great doc, tons of old footage of backstage stuff, concerts, etc. On a personal note, I don't hear or listen to her music. I FEEL it. She has that certain quality that makes the music come to life. Hell, I refer to her as Queen Janis. Such a powerful, soulful singer. Highly recommend.

Calling her Queen Janis or The Queen is what a lot of artists that knew called her. Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan released an album back in 83 or so, also aired on PBS, and Albert was telling Stevie about a time he, Jimi Hendrix and Janis were at some place and were going to just play something together. He was first with Jimi, telling him to "go get The Queen," because "that's what [they] called her back then."

I did not know that. I know one article in the movie mentioned "Queen" but didn't know it was that widespread. That's awesome.

Rattle The Cage:

Arabian movie about a former alcoholic who wakes up in a small town jail cell and is taunted and psychologically tortured by a cop. I thought it was well done, and the guy who plays the cop is absolutely brilliant in his acting. The emoting he does is quite superb.

Her music has always made me feel very uncomfortable. That's probably a testament to how much raw emotion comes through, but it's just unlistenable to me. It's too intimate. It feels like rubbernecking at an accident where a child's been hurt.

Audrey Hepburn or Sophia Loren?

He that hath a beard
is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than
a man; and he that is more than a youth is not for me, and
he that is less than a man, I am not for him. -- Much Ado About Nothing, Act II Scene 1

Veronica Lake FTW

Aaah, ok.

I'm kind of partial to a young Joan Crawford. She didn't age well but in the '30's she was something else.

Ingenue Crawford is lovely, I agree.

She has my vote as the G.O.A.T. Hollywood actress. She remade herself and was absolutely convincing in each of her personae. Plus just watching the technical detail of her acting is an entire theater arts degree. Probably smarter than half of her directors; certainly smarter than all of the executives. Like Hedy Lamarr, she must have found talking to other actors and actresses incredibly boring.
