Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

Re: Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

So? They made a new rule. Kids are told to turn their controversial t shirts inside out or go home all the time. It happened at my kids school on a regular basis. The dress code is a book there.

You understand this is a basketball game, not school, right?

Personally, I hope one of the parents wears the shirt and gets told to leave. That would be interesting. Do parents also lose their First Amendment rights on school property?

As a parent of a high school athlete, I have no problem with political statements being banned from high school events.

Priceless - I would ask you this. What if a team from Alabama wanted to wear t-shirts with an aborted fetus on it during warmups? You good with that?

What if they mentioned... brace yourself... God! :0

Back to the point though... teams wear uniforms.

There's a reason for that. It's not to restrict individuality either.

I'm sure the NBA would love to have come down on Rose and James, but the political climate wouldn't allow it at this point so they claim to have no problem with it.

Most likely he'll say that's fine until some team tries to pray before a game six months from now.

High school sports are about being on a team, representing your school/community and competing.

It's not the time or place to make political statements.

Don't make the story about something other than coming together to compete. You allow one political expression, you have to allow them all and yes, it is in fact a slippery slope.

The exception being personal as in to support a fellow classmate or faculty member who may have something bad happen to them, but then that's not political.

I'm not a parent, and I agree. I went to Catholic school, where of course the "Right to Life Month" field of crosses was perfectly OK, but an unapproved, left-leaning student publication was immediately shutdown and its writers threatened with expulsion. I didn't like it then or now, but I think legal precedent has largely determined that the free speech rights of minors can, to an extent, be curtailed in a school setting. Granted, private schools are different from the pubbies.

Cool. I don't even have to respond since it's already done for me!

I would say that they don't wear these during games, only during warmups. The same as the NBA players...did you really think LeBron wore this instead of his Cavaliers uniform?

Cool. You don't have to answer a question that may expose a double standard. ;)

And yes, I know that the NBA players wore the shirts during warmups. Teams have team-issued warmup gear - which is what I'd guess the powers that be at the NBA would prefer that the players wear.

I'm not the one trying to limit speech here. If someone really wants to wear an anti-choice shirt during warmups that's their call. See, part of living in a Democracy (actually a Republic. but that's another matter) is that there will be all kinds of opinions out there - some of them you might not even like! Freedom of Speech is not a Freedom from Being Offended.

You're changing the subject.

Youth sporting events are neither the time nor the place.

Well done with "anti-choice" though. ;) And no, it's clearly not their call. Nor should it be.

You asked me a question and I answered it...and *I* am changing the subject?

A "youth" game probably isn't the best place for dissent. I would argue a high school tournament isn't "youth" sports however.

I didn't ask you a question. I accused you of dodging (at the time of the post).

A 16 or 17 year old is a "youth." It's called high school "boys" basketball.

Not the time or place for political statements - whether they are statements that I agree with or not.

That sure looks like a question to me. That's why those things at the end are called "question marks."

Re: Bad Cop, Bad Cop, Whatcha gonna do?

Lol. Remember when you told me to watch my language?

Stay classy. Or I'll have to report you to the board. Which might get a little awkward.
