B1G Championship in Detroit

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

The worst crowds at the Thursday games of the old CCHA "Super Six" were many times larger than what I've seen at either game today. Conservatively I'd say the crowds when Notre Dame was playing the first Thursday games in the early 21st century generally numbered around 2000. Box scores were in the 6000+ range, with that number largely driven by MSU fans. What they have at the Joe today is an absolute embarrassment, and there can't be more than a few hundred people in the building. I cannot imagine ad revenue for TV spots on the BTN can possibly justify this kind of a format.

I've been coming to college hockey at the Joe since 1996. This is by far the smallest crowd I've ever seen, Super 6 included. Michigan may have 300-400 fans in the building right now.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

I think you could get groups of students there supporting their respective schools IF the conference would make student tickets available for say 10 bucks apiece?
Do you really think the average student can afford what they're currently charging for seats?

This is the result of zero promotion by the big ten. No hotel, no banquet, no reception, nothing.

Which is really lazy on their part, I've organized a convention, and that should be really easy for the big ten.

This is nuts.

Not Kaytee nuts, but they are trying to feed the wild birds that happen to attend.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Collegehockeystats.net lists the attendance for the first game as 0. They may be more accurate than they realize.

The B1g Tourney will be permanent in either St Paul or Chicago, like many predicted. I still say St Paul, but fear Chicago.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Most member schools will never agree to that.

Look at the money being brought in DET, vs St Paul. And the "great" minds of the B1G Mistake will think the most central location (CHI) will bring the most people and therefore the most money.

I thought about asking the MSU student section what they were offering but figured they would've said something if they did have anything.

The only student deals I've seen have been an essentially unadvertised "Bring your ID to the box office" for $15 that was stuck at the bottom of an article, and the Red Wings tweeting you can get $15 upper $30 lower with an ID.

The Big Ten is pricing themselves out. They're essentially asking for double what fans are used to paying for the GLI and Duel in the D games. No one is going to pay for that, on a Thursday, when one game involves teams no one cares about and the other game involves playing a team with its worst season ever.

It'll be interesting to see how this MSU/UM game fills up tomorrow. They filled up the GLI final pretty well and sold out the regular season game, but that was also with a 50 year tradition and a 25 year tradition that was advertised heavily. And also wasn't majorly overpriced.

I'd watch what you say. That team from the game "no one cares about" may be the one to send your team home!

t

Other conferences are not much better. I'm buying off the street for the WCHA tourney tomorrow, and if I don't find anything for $20 or less, I'll head to the bar and watch the MN game on TV for the same amount (or less). I'm not paying $25 to watch two teams I only kinda care about.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

That game was the definition of fool's gold. Larkin had a pretty sweet goal, but I'm really still wondering how Michigan scored goals 1 and 3. And making some of those dumb choices on the ice will usually result in goals given up against teams that have more than 4 wins on the season.

Anyways, onto tomorrow. This team knows how to beat state: Go up 2-0 on them. Preferably early. If Michigan goes up 3-0, it's game over. This will be the first conference tournament meeting in the series since the 2010 CCHA Tourney when Michigan went on the road and ended the sparties season in a sweep en route to the 2010 CCHA Tournament Championship.

And with that factoid, a side note: the two ********s that you can thank for this crappy neutral site format are Barry Alvarez and Gene Smith. They are the ones who didn't want the original tournament format.

NOBODY down here likes Gene Smith. He's an overpaid idiot!

Are you saying you would rather have the WOW factor? Because I know a man who needs a job.

Brandon? Yeah, that is a WOW.
I think we could get a well qualified Ohio State alum who would do a much better job for a fraction of the one & a quarter million a year they're throwing away on Smith.
Personally I don't think anyone working for a public institution should make more a year than the Governor of the entire state!
If he wasn't so up there in years former football coach Earl Bruce would be the perfect guy.
He bleeds Scarlet & Grey and is honest with ETHICS!

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Day 1 in St. Paul sold 14k tickets. That is almost 5 times the tickets sold as the Joe without Minnesota playing that day. I doubt this tourny is at the Joe very many years in the future.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

I would guess they'll at least give the new Olympia/Joe/whatever it's going to be called one or two shots at hosting before writing off Detroit.
