B1G Championship in Detroit

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Day 1 in St. Paul sold 14k tickets. That is almost 5 times the tickets sold as the Joe without Minnesota playing that day. I doubt this tourny is at the Joe very many years in the future.
I brought this up before but no replies, if this is an open would financially for the conference do you think they'll try and scrap what's already in place and come up with something different or are the contracts all signed and it's a done deal for the next 3 years?

What changes can they make that will make the fans who dont care care? What rule can they put in place that will get Michigan fans to show up for a game not against State and vice versa?

Spartan,

My guess is the new Joe gets 2 years and if it cant beat St. Paul then it will be out.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

I was talking to some people high up in the B1G last year who were attending one of our games and when I asked about the future of the tournament beyond the initial 5 years they responded the conference was open to other cities hosting but what was said then and what will eventually happen may well be something entirely different.

BUT HOCKEYTOWN!

Friggin' MI. What a joke.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

It isnt the cities, it is the fanbases. The only reason St. Paul had better numbers is Gopher fan bought packages. They didnt exactly show up outside of their games but whatever.

If the games went to say, Columbus do yo really think that would make a difference? I watched when the Gophs played up there attendance was sparse. Add in that many years OSU will be playing b-ball still and no one will care. (not ripping your fanbase fyi) Michigan fans wont travel 45 minutes to watch at the Joe unless they play State we know they wont travel either.

This tournament sucks just like the Big Ten basketball tourny sucks. it is too expensive, the travel isnt ideal and the arenas are too big for the product. It is stale...I would rather they scrap it altogether.

The the BTHC would lose it's auto-bid.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

Much better NHL franchise. Don't even reply, the Red Wings are infinitely better than the Wild. Do you understand logic? Of course not, you're a gofer fan...

Here's some logic. I'm not a Wild fan.

And what does the NHL have to do with college hockey?

MI sucks at the following of the sport OVERALL. Can't pigeonhole one aspect of it.

BOX.

No it would not. It's the choice of the conference to award the automatic bid to the champion of a tournament. The only reason conference tournaments are a thing is due to $$$.

See: Ivy League not having a basketball tournament and awarding their league's automatic bid to the regular season champion aka the conference champion.

We like our teams. Wings, Griffins, UM, MSU all draw relatively well. So we don't follow the sport fanatically? Eh, whatever. How many states actually do? If we're going by that standard, everyone except Indiana sucks at following basketball and everyone but Texas sucks at following football.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

I said it before and I'll say it again, the B1G Tournament ever being in Saint Paul is a bunch of bull****. It's 7 miles from the Minny campus.

Don't insult my intelligence and call that a neutral site. Get rid of the stupid format and go to campus sites.

If they did that then the 2 seed would get screwed out of a home game

You're so cute thinking it is not about money.

Spartan4Life: Check out MN's HS tourney attendances. And then continue. And check the numbers for the college hockey tourneys. Give it up while you MAY have some pride to save.

Then don't complain when the championship is held at either UWs or OSUs practice facility.

Tough titty said the kitty, but the milk's still good.

Solution: win the conference. It gives you more of an incentive, no?

That was the format of pretty much every B1G Tournament sans Basketball until the schools with less-than athletic departments starting bleating about how it wasn't fair. So they went to a rotating site at campuses in most sports* instead of awarding the tournament hosting duties to the regular season champion.

*Baseball infuriatingly went to pro, neutral sites in 2011 where it continues to draw awful numbers for most games unless it's in Omaha and involving Nebraska.

Attendance has been strong throughout the years, with 22 tournaments eclipsing the 100,000+ barrier, and in 2004 a record setting total of 120,114 (both classes). In the 2006 State Tournament, the average attendance per game in the championship brackets was 18,000 people. The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament is currently the largest state sports tournament in terms of viewing and attendance, beating the Texas State High School Football Tournament, Florida's State High School Football Tournament, and Indiana's State High School Basketball Tournament.

OSU hasn't won a conference championship since Nixon was president and Wisconsin should clear up their arena schedule. It's not like they aren't the owners and operators of the Kohl Center.
