Austin Smith Colgate

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

You write for the website, and when you post links to the site over and over in multiple threads to advertise the site, it's called spamming.

This thread is supposed to be about Austin Smith. Any time a kid puts up 32 goals in 30 games, he should be in the running for the award. I don't care if he plays in the ECAC or the WCHA. Smith has had a great year, and if he can get to 40, I think he has a tremendous shot at winning the award.

If you have a problem with me posting links, then report me to USCHO, and they can make the decision that they feel most comfortable with. I will abide by that decision. There is no reason to hijack yet another thread Jdubbs (BTW, also against USCHO Terms and Conditions).

well it certainly isn't spamming in this instance because it relates to the thread topic...you don't like FS23 and his lists so you constantly complain about it, thats way more annoying than him posting a link to something related to the topic at hand.

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

You do realize spamming the board with requests to visit your website is a violation of the terms and conditions of this board, correct? Please stop.

you might find that the rules are different for people who are paying members of uscho...
they are allowed to spam, to plug political candidates, to troll...

is that a surprise?

when's the Smith Hat trick against a top 10 team coming?

DaCosta scored 5 in his very first game against Army... does Smith have a 5 goal game?

So DaCosta padded his stats against a weak opponent, and then you're asking how Smith has done against the top 10.

Double standard much?

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

I thought this thread was discussing the merits of Austin Smith's Hobey Baker candidacy? Consideration of head-to-head conference play including Colgate's team and Smith's individual performance does matter....regardless of history.

You thought correctly. However, we were specifically talking about the ECAC in comparison to the other leagues.

You make it sound like the WCHA and ECAC talent levels are like comparing the NHL & the AHL. The WCHA is better, Hockey East is better but I am sick and tired of all the comparisons that make it sound like the talent discrepency is so vast. If you look at the leagues as a whole its actually very close. The top teams in these leagues are where the bigger difference is and come tournament time it shows. ECAC vs WCHA & Hockey East is 14-23-8 and I'm sure with less home games. The Hobey is based on one year and one year only and Austin Smith, based on his performance, is the favorite at this time.

It would be nice for the EZAC to do anything of note in the tournament.

How many years do we have to hear cries from you, "No, no, no this team is different." Only to have them flame out when it matters.

Very Rare that the top ECAC teams will be as good as BC, Minn, North Dakota, Michigan and a few other top teams but as I said before, OVERALL top to bottom the talent level in each league is not as different as it is mad out to be.

If if they had won a title or two recently you would probably say that is not enough. Yale made it to the final eight the past two years and got knocked off by the eventual national champion, good luck to any out of conference that runs into Union or Cornell (if they make it). Continue to underestimate and then pay later.

"If they had one a title..."

You obviously didn't go to Yale with that brilliant piece of writing.

I think the progression was Austin Smith's performance against "better" competition, which transgressed into ECAC teams' performance(s) vs HE/CCHA/WCHA. I give no argument that the ECAC is on-the-whole not as strong as those three conferences. And as an ECAC alumnus, I would love to see an ECAC school make another run like my school did in 1990. But back to the topic: Against the "better" teams noted earlier, Austin has averaged more than a point per game. And he did that with supposedly-inferior teammates on a supposedly-inferior team. I think it stands to reason that if you put him on an HE/CCHA/WCHA team that he would have even more against those "better" teams.

But I am glad he's at Colgate. So let's examine that .... His performance has been high and consistent all season. He's the nation's goal scoring leader, 50% more than his nearest competition. Amongst the top five goal scorers, he has more assits than the others. On the majority (80%) of his assists, he was the primary helper (usually it's about a 50/50 split). He's only been held off the scoresheet three times all year. His numbers are not boosted by just a couple great games, 22 times he's had one or two points (for a total of 30 points). Nor is his point total inflated by the power play (when others get about 50% of theirs); PP points account for about 25% of his total. He plays on both the PP and PK. He has more (6) shorthanded goals than he does on the man-advantage (5).

So let's see .... The nation's leading goal scorer, more than just a goal scorer, consistently productive, productive against "better" competition, plays all facets of the game, scores more SH than on the PP, prodigious point total not inflated by either PP points or 2nd assists. Austin Smith should be the leading Hobey Baker candidate. He's that good.

And if my aunt had nuts, she'd be my uncle. Forget a title, try sending a team back to the FF...or how about trying to get a measly two teams into the tourney this year. How many times has an ECAC fan uttered that last sentence?

I think I just did that on Sunday....

Keith.
