Austin Smith Colgate

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

Colgate has played Nebraska-Omaha, Miami (2), Merrimack, Cornell (2), and Union. I'd be interested to see his statistics in those games.

I've seen Austin play and he's a good hockey player, but I'd be willing to bet that he'd have 15-20 goals if Colgate played in the WHAT or Hockey East.

You want to ignore Ferris State? #1 team in the country?
So in the 7 games against the teams you listed he had 5 goals, 3 assists for 8 points. Including FSU, he's got 6 goals, 4 assists in 9 games.

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

And if straight statistics were all that mattered for the Hobey Baker, he'd have a very good shot. However, level of talent you play to get your stats, as well as academic and community involvement are a large contribution to the voting process. He'll be in the Hobey Ten, maybe even the Hat Trick, but I don't see him winning it all playing the competition he is playing.

Take off the maroon tinted glasses, when is the last time a guy had this many more goals than anyone else being considered for the hobey and didn't win?

Umm. Chill out. I didn't mean yo ignore FSU. He is a good hockey player.

I never said he wasn't a good player. Yeah, I have maroon tinted glasses on, because I get to see Jack Connolly play every day. Not many people get to see that. Does Austin Smith play in the town he grew up? Has he started 156 straight games? Has he been a two time All-American? No, he hasn't. He's a good player in a mediocre conference. He'll be there at the end, but Hobey criterion requires more than just goals. Hobey likes them, but it's not all that matters, and I'm betting we'll see that in April.

No worries, just pointing out that you missed FSU, wasn't trying to be obnoxious towards you...

So this is career achievement award now? When someone does what he does offensively, it's hard to deny him. First off, the WCHA is far from being that much better than the ECAC this season. The WCHA is definitely third behind the CCHA and HEA this season so what Connolly is doing should also be devalued...if you believe that. We're not talking about a player in AHA like Eric Ehn, Jacques Lamoureux, Nick Johnson, or Paul Zanette.

I personally wouldn't put the ECAC and WCHA on the same pedestal even this year, but that's just me. Like I said, great player, we'll just see where his team and he is come the end of the year.

According to KRACH, Colgate has the 36th ranked SOS, while UMD sits at 29th...

Re: Austin Smith Colgate

Total goals: Smith 32, Connelly 17

Goals per game: Smith 1.07, Connelly 0.57

Goals per game against the bottom 29 teams in the KRACH rankings: Smith 1.24, Connelly 0.71

Goals per game against the top 29 teams in the KRACH rankings: Smith 0.66, Connelly 0.44

I'm sure Connelly would have great numbers playing for Colgate. But if you think Smith wouldn't have great numbers playing for UMD you're nuts.

Yeah, and if I had to choose between playing Union, Cornell, and Colgate or play Minnesota, Denver, or Colorado College...I would probably choose the first option.

As would most WCHA fans, but that doesn't change the fact that Connolly vs Smith is more Apples to Apples than Apples to Oranges despite what you might think...

I wasn't saying it was apples to oranges. I think that he is a fine player, and would do well in any league he played in. Would he have 30 goals in the WCHA? Probably not, but he'd still probably be in that 20-25 range. But, as I said, it's about a little more than just goals. I don't know his credentials to merit that statement, but things other than amount of goals are taken into account. As much as you think past accomplishments and downfalls don't matter, ask Matt Frattin about that? They shouldn't, but they do, and that's just the way it is.

Yes, more is taken into account but I highly doubt the Hobey committee cares that Connolly plays in the town he grew up. As far as I know Smith hasn't thrown lawnmowers or been anything like the typical UND player, those things sure seem more like disqualifiers than actually pushing someone over the top, otherwise someone like Eric Ehn would have won because who can deny the extra requirements of playing hockey at Air Force?

I disagree, I think they will take that into account. I think they'll take his previous successes into account. I think they'll take the fact he's the Captain of the defending national champions into account. They'll take into account he has a more points in his career than any player currently in college hockey, and it's not close. All of it will be taken into account, and it will be weighed against Austin Smith's 40 goals in the ECAC.

This was a thread intended to talk about how good a player Austin Smith is. I agree that he is a great player, and if he wins, he's deserving. I shouldn't have even brought up who he played, and clogged the thread with it.

Austin Smith had a disappointing Junior year or he would be right there with Connolly, currently he trails Connolly 185 to 150 for their careers, but Smith still has more goals at Colgate than Connolly has at UMD (75 vs 63).
