Arizona State Moving To D1

Re: Arizona State Moving To D1

Ive been hearing this for years. Then Penn State and ASU happended. And UAH is somehow still a thing.

Exactly. People keep saying that these things won't, CAN'T happen. Yet they do.

I think it's far more unlikely that expansion stalls at this point.

Re: Arizona State Moving To D1

I can't imagine ASU would have pursued this (which it appears they did, rather than waiting for an alum to say 'I've got $30 million here if you start hockey') if they thought they would remain a geographic outlier for a long time. ADs talk to each other.

Absolutely zero chance Air Force leaves Atlantic Hockey. Too easy of a schedule, guaranteed games against Army, and the potential for Navy to join as well.

Such an easy schedule that gets them to the tournament once every 5 years. It apparently isn't easy enough

Re: Arizona State Moving To D1

Watching the press conference seems like the Pac12 conference is behind ASU's move and is encouraging other Pac12 schools to join. They have their own TV network and some big money programs potentially.

Are there really 5 Pac12 schools with donors ready to step forward with $30M each? Are there even 5 schools in the entire country with that?

Re: Arizona State Moving To D1

There already is and will be lots more speculation about where ASU ends up and what is the best fit. Ultimately I think, ASU is going to (at least initially) end up in whatever situation makes the best sense for them. And let's not kid ourselves; that means the best economic situation. So when you're all speculating it's best to remember that if the WCHA and NCHC are going to "compete" in some way for this team to join their conference, then whoever can offer the best financial incentives is probably going to win the battle. I don't see either conference in a strong position to offer financial incentives. The WCHA does have the exemptions for playing in Alaska which does add up to additional home games. At minimum that is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 dollars a year with the high end of perhaps even double that amount. Being already geographically disadvantaged is going to weigh into the decision as well. Go to Alaska and gain the exemptions but you also have to go to Houghton and Marquette and Big Rapids and Alabama. There are two relatively close schools in the BHHC (Denver and CC) but those are still flights for ASU and the rest of that conference is no better than the WCHA in terms of travel profile for ASU.

Should be interesting.

Re: Arizona State Moving To D1

Are there any fans of ASU...?
Yeah, the Coyotes are just killing it down there - certainly a hockey hotbed with tens of thousands of fans just screaming for a hockey team. Can't wait until the NCAA has to subsidize the team or the NCHC has to share their revenue with them.
They won't end up in the Bi6 and the NCHC can have them. I have no interest in adding some mega-troplis university like that to the WCHA where their hockey team will be the 27th most popular team on their campus right behind the recently added women's sand volleyball team. Good luck to them, hope they last longer than NAU, US International and other programs in the desert SW.

This is a bit harsh. I hope you know what you're talking about.

They play in a rink that seats 500 (no I'm not missing a zero, five hundred). Multiply that times 10 and you MIGHT have a team that hangs around a while in that area. Paying $5 to watch a club team is not the same as paying $20-$25 to watch a D-I hockey team. How many of those fans are going to come to games at 5 times the cost just because they're suddenly playing teams they don't play in any other sports. $20+ is what they'll be charging if they don't want the team to be a drain on the university - then again, maybe they don't care, there will be another 20,000 new tuition paying students each year they can always drain fees from. Hockey survives at small schools with small budgets because at most of them hockey is the biggest sport and has all the attention.
