And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

Re: And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

Bane isnt supposed to be Dr. Doom and doesnt have the history of any of those characters you named...now you are just being obtuse.
Clearly you are well versed on Bane's backstory/introduction story and are an excellent person to listen to on the subject.

Wow. Handy must have missed the part where I enjoyed the film. Immensely in fact. I guess he's mad because I didn't enjoy it in the proper way.

Nolan Bane /= Chuck Dixon Bane :)

Two different characters with two completely different motivations. But if you are trying to say I didnt read Knightfall and the subsequent followups and further comics with Bane in them (including his latest exploits) you can feel free to think that...you would be wrong but you have to be used to that by now :D Bane is no different than any other comic character, he changes depending on who writes him. He has been the supergenius venom freak who broke the Bat, the comic relief with a weird accent like in Secret Six, hired muscle on roids...you name it. He is Batman's version of Doomsday he shows up and gets his great storyline where he sits atop of the mountain after destroying the hero then inevitably loses and becomes another jobber later on. (though him not nearly as bad as Doomsday)

If this movie had been a comic I would have been upset at how Bane went out for many reasons. Hell if this was a movie based on any semblence of the DC universe I might feel the same way but it isnt. This is a world where Batman makes mistakes. (something DC almost never allows) This is a world where Batman actually gets a happy ending. (something they would never in a million years allow) This is an interpretation of Batman where I think it makes sense how things went down. You (and others...mostly hardcore comic message board people who complain about everything) disagree which is fine I am not here to change your minds. All I was saying to Scooby was this assertion he was given by his fellow moviegoer (which he now amazingly has adopted as his own) that there is never a 1a villain is just flat out wrong. It happens all the time.

Scooby,

I didnt miss it, I was just taking a pot shot at you because its fun and you have had very little to whine about this offseason for hockey. I should have added more emoticons my bad :)

(I was gonna pm you to make sure you got I was joking but I got uber lazy)

I think it's more that other's don't like Nolan's 'look how clever we are' twist to the bad guys as much as he did. Whether or not you enjoyed the movie overall is irrelevant.

She's welcome to bend herself over an oversized motorcycle again anytime. :D

I saw her in person at a Thom Yorke concert in LA a few years ago. Holy cripes, in person wearing nothing special she was more than welcome to bend herself over an oversized motorcycle.

Aaaah, I see. I was in the third camp. I didn't care enough about Bane or Batman to give two rips what Nolan did. Once it was explained to me how epic the screw job was I understood completely why people were upset.

Re: And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

Says you...as usual the vast majority of the people out there do not agree with you. You are in league with Foxton though so you got that going for you...which is nice. ;)

I never said it was a teamup btw I said whoever told you that in comics there is never a 1 and 1a villain is either an idiot or lying to themselves so they have something more to whine about seeing as it happens in the comics all the time :)

The Joker never played Second Banana to anyone. Dr. Doom didn't. Galactus didn't. Loki didn't.

I guess Bane is just another Silver Surfer, and not as cool.

Bane isnt supposed to be Dr. Doom and doesnt have the history of any of those characters you named...now you are just being obtuse. Every Batman villain has played "second fiddle" at some point even your precious Joker. (although he more often falls under the "plot device" ideal which is even more pathetic) Hell I bet if you wanted to you could even find stories where Dr. Doom was second fiddle, I just don't care enough to want to find them. Do you have any clue how often the "bait and switch" method is used in the comics where they tease one villain for 90% of a storyarch, usually a villain strong enough to hold the story themselves, then at the last second show someone was pulling their strings or putting the whole plan in motion all along? It is almost as cliche as supervillain monologues :)

But hey, I learned long ago you never let yourself enjoy anything. (and you have horrible taste in movies see: Jennifer's Body ;) ) Hell you are probably looking for reasons right now why Nick Bjugstad coming back next year is actually a detriment to the Gophers not helpful :D ;) I wont try and change your thought process any further my friend :)

Yes, the fact that this thread has descended into a battle of geeks could not have been predicted. :)

Re: And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

I thought the ending revealed some great psychological truths.....

Alfred: "Batman can't win this time, only Bruce Wayne can win."

Blake: "I could see the pain in your eyes."

The hero's archetypal journey: From Orphan to Wanderer to Warrior to Martyr to Magician.

Batman dies so that Bruce Wayne can be healed, and also the redemption of Selina Kyle becomes complete (her subplot: trust no one, oops, I trusted Batman, but he died, but then Bruce proved trustworthy after all).

Well, technically, Bruce Wayne died, too. At least that is what the world thinks. ;)

Re: And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

I saw this in another context and it struck me that it also would fit perfectly here.

Lately we are hearing a bit about ideology, but the work of a great political philosopher, Edmund Burke, is more pertinent. Burke respected reality, acknowledged human nature, and appreciated political context. In "Reflections on the Revolution in France," he wrote, "Circumstances (which with some gentlemen pass for nothing) give in reality to every political principle its distinguishing color and discriminating effect. The circumstances are what render every civil and political scheme beneficial or noxious to mankind."

I really loved the layers of nuance in this movie. The French revolution scenes with Scarecrow as the judge were great cinema.

"Your Reactions: Right Choice?"

Classic. :D

Re: And the new villain(s) for The Dark Knight Rises are...

Had a flashback on Tuesday to 9-11-01, I was in Manhattan that day. The scene in The Dark Knight Rises was so eerily similar to what many of us feared might happen to us that day: that the entire island might be cut off by the government to prevent a possible spread of biological / radiological material carried by people fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, by the end of the day we were cleared to leave.

Love it!

Ben Affleck has been chosen to play Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. This news has been met with much excitement. And when I say excitement, I mean....
