Re: America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 - The USCHO debates

People with Medicare defend it fiercely, so apparently it isn't the program that is in trouble but perhaps its funding. Good question for debate.

Agreed, and don't even call Medicare a "socialist program", or imply that current taxpayers are footing the bill for current recipients. God knows the Depends crowd will have none of that talk from us "wing nuts".

The typical conservative at a health care forum:

Look, people have the right to speak, but is this guy really adding anything, or is he just an old crank using his one chance to confront a politician to release 60 years of pent up frustration at his life.

Lynah - will respond to you later.

Perhaps this will help for starters...

What did he say that was incorrect? Sounded to me like some ordinary Joe who is tired of all the BS that comes out of Congress (from both sides).

The survey, insurers and some economists say, shows the sort of irrational pricing of medical care that is an integral part of the nation’s health care problems and that is largely being ignored, some say, in the current debate.

insurers’ low payments to doctors who enter into contracts with them and the doctors’ difficulties, in many cases, in getting paid at all. That is why, he said, doctors may simply abandon insurance plans. Then patients end up with extra fees because they have to go outside their networks to get the care they want.

But, in general, patients hit with high bills from out-of-network doctors and hospitals may have little recourse,

It sounded like he was drunk. :D

To be fair, this link is a necessity to debunk some of the craziness out here.

So let me get this right. According to the taglines in the videos:

1) Insurance companies will have to stop rationing so much, so they'll be paying for even more procedures
2) Nothing will change in the area of euthanasia (I believe this to be true, BTW)
3) Coverage for veterans will be "greatly" expanded, leading to more health care spending
4) Small companies will pay less to cover their employees with no effect on coverage, so the insurance companies get less money
5) The government will pay even less to reimburse insurance companies for Medicare expenses, so again less money for insurance companies
6) People who are covered under the current system (which is so irrevocably broken that we ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO OMFG! SPEND $1T NOW NOW NOW) don't actually have to change a thing.

Sounds to me like private insurance companies are going to be squeezed out of business - expected to do more with much less income. I'm more than a little suspicious that this is the intent, so that when this happens the government can come riding in on its single-payer white horse to save the day.

If this is the best sales pitch the White House can put together, then it does make you wonder how bad the REAL story is... :(

I'm shocked Rover never answered the question, kinda like congress. Maybe Rover is Barney Frank:cool:

Lynah,

Yes, somebody is going to make out less well in all of this, and that somebody is insurance companies. They realize this, and are on board with reform most likely for the very reason you mention - they don't want to compete with a government option. To that end, they are willing to have their profit margin squeezed by 1) not being able to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions and 2) some limits on out of pocket costs. Pharma also realizes they'll be making less, just like the medical community does. They're all on board with that and have come out in favor of what's being debated in Congress now. Just because they can now profit from a disorganized system isn't a reason to keep that system in place.

I'll throw two other things out there from the town hall meeting today.

First, any public option needs to be self sustaining - as in its premiums need to be able to pay for who it insures. No tax dollars thrown at the entity to keep it afloat. How then would it have an unfair advantage over private industry?

Next, efficiency is a big driver here. You won't get paid per procedure anymore, but the point is for example to have more electronic record keeping so you aren't ordering the same test again if you get treatment at a different place. Again, even if this means less money going from the govt to a hospital or insurance company, thus reducing their profits, why would we not want to do this?

... outlined in sections 440 and 1904 of the House bill (Page 838), under the heading "home visitation programs for families with young children and families expecting children." The programs (provided via grants to states) would educate parents on child behavior and parenting skills.

Why would they have to visit?

The Ministry of Love would have the Thought Police use the telescreen to monitor crimethink and ensure doubleplusgood rightthink.

... on Page 840: The state "shall identify and prioritize serving communities that are in high need of such services, especially communities with a high proportion of low-income families."

Oh, so this is this just for the proles. Blackwhite.

So long as it also doesn't have tax dollars for its initial setup costs, salaries, capital expenditures, real estate purchases, etc, then it wouldn't. But I guess the public option has died anyway, so it's moot.

You know Sicatoka, I think under this bill tin foil might be covered as a medical expense. Might help you be able to afford to replace that hat of yours. :D

Spin,

Is that why you're always checking me out at games? :p

Re: America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 - The USCHO debates

The more things change, the more they stay the same......

From Cicero, Letters to his brother Quintus, 2.3.2 (56 B.C., tr. D.R. Shackleton Bailey):

Milo appeared on 7 February. Pompey spoke—or rather tried to speak, for no longer was he on his feet than Clodius’ gang raised a clamour, and all through the speech he was interrupted not merely by shouting but by booing and abuse. When he wound up (and I will say he showed courage; he was not put off, delivered all he had to say, sometimes even managing to get silence by his personal authority)—well, when he wound up, Clodius rose. Wishing to repay the compliment, our side gave him such an uproarious reception that he lost command of thoughts, tongue, and countenance. That lasted till half past one, Pompey having finished just after midday—all manner of insults, ending up with some highly scabrous verse to the address of Clodius and Clodia. Pale with fury, he started a game of question and answer in the middle of the shouting: ‘Who’s starving the people to death?’ ‘Pompey,’ answered the gang. ‘Who wants to go to Alexandria?’ Answer: ‘Pompey.’ ‘Whom do you want to go?’ Answer: ‘Crassus’ (who was present as a supporter of Milo, wishing him no good). About 2:15 the Clodians started spitting at us, as though on a signal. Sharp rise in temperature! They made a push to dislodge us, our side countercharged. Flight of gang. Clodius was hurled from the Rostra, at which point I too made off for fear of what might happen in the free-for-all.

So, why did Obama keep saying the AARP endorses the bill when it doesn't? Why lie like the other side does?

Dumb.

Who knows? The WH has lost control of the message, and it's starting to lose complete control of the issues.

Chuck Norris, on the other hand, never visits houses. Houses visit Chuck Norris.

Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas. ;)

We started down this path with Medicare/Medicaid. I can't find where the Federal Government had that power and I can't find where it has authority for this. If a state like MA wants a program like they have, well, bully for them. People can choose to live or not live in MA and still be an American under the Constitution. However, a national program seems to fly in the face of the Tenth Amendment.
