DU #1 on INCH Power Rankings.

#3 in Pairwise.

If they win every Friday night game for the rest of the season they should be OK. :D

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Is anybody here going to Magness Arena next weekend to see a couple of the Women's Olympic Gold Medal-hopefuls? I haven't seen the event marketed too much around town, but should be really cool. One word... VETTER! Can she shut out Canada??
On Tuesday night the US Women's team will play a high school boys team in Minnesota. I'll be interested to see how that goes.

Many NCAA womens hoops teams practice against male students including DU. They feel it toughens them up and practices a more physical game. Many womens libbers don't like the practice philosophy.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

While Rock and Ruegs score the big goals, Chevy makes the saves and gets the glory, it seems to me that DU would not be where it is without the play of Jesse Martin, who may be one of the most underrated two-way players in college hockey.

Martin leads the team with a +7, has chipped in with 12 points offensively, and is probably the best PK guy on the team. He also blocks shots, finishes checks and does all those hard-hat things that makes the team successful.

Keep it up, J-Mart. We've almost forgotten your bad junior hockey pumpkin-making....

The "Jailbait Line" was tearing it up all weekend. Martin (#14), Ruegsegger (#15) & Maiani (#16).

Jesse Martin has been the best surprise of the year.

I think what women don't like about playing men in practice in hoops is more that you've got the top 5 women playing against the guys, and the other 10 roster players either standing around and watching or playing against the other reserve women, which is seen as a reduced opportunity vs playing against the top women. I don't think there is any question playing against men is a good practice tool in almost any sport where men offer a higher level of competitive hurdles.

They beat Hopkins HS 3-2 last week. Shots were slightly in favor of the women. Hopkins is decent, but just outside the top 20 in the state.

"bad junior hockey pumpkin-making" "jailbait line"
???
You can read all about Jesse's Pumpkin here. Unfortunately a photo of his Edmonton Oilers pumpkin no longer exists, so you will have to take our word for it. It was pretty sloppy. If somebody knows how to Google cache the photo we might be able to locate it.

As far as the "Jailbait Line," you really should have been in Colorado Springs on Friday Night during the 1st period when the joke was making the rounds. Big laughs.

Franklin: "Hey. 14, 15 & 16 are really flying around out there for DU."

Dave: "Whats that called when you date younger women?"

Me: "Jailbait"

For the rest of the weekend everyone called them the Jailbait Line.

Kind of amazing when you think about it, but looking at the progress of the entire DU athletic dept since going back to all D-I in 1999, DU teams continue to make strides on the national scene:

Top 5 NCAA Programs: Men's Hockey, Skiing (Men and Women)

Top 10 NCAA Programs: Women's Golf

Top 30 NCAA programs: Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Gymnastics, Women's Soccer, Mens and Women's Swimming

Top 50 NCAA programs: Men's Soccer, Men's Golf

Top 150 NCAA programs: Men's Basketball, Women's Volleyball, Mens and Women's Tennis

Program that is struggling: Women's Basketball

Denver Swimming is really coming up in the world and may breakl into the top 20 this year-- The University of Denver swimming and diving teams turned in strong performances on the third day of action at the Georgia Fall Invitational, finishing second behind the Georgia Bulldogs with a combined team score of 1,604 points.

Tallying 861 points through the three-day Invitational, the Pioneer women finished behind No. 3 Georgia and ahead of No. 5 Florida (678 pts), No. 17 North Carolina (33 pts), No. 6 Auburn (33 pts) and Boston University (17 pts).

On the men’s side, the Pioneers slipped one spot to finish in third place with 743 points, behind No. 12 Georgia (1374 pts.) and No. 7 Florida (758 pts.). Denver finished ahead of No. 20 Harvard (558 pts), and No. 5 Auburn (69 pts).

The women's basketball coach is only in his 2nd season. Obviously he needs some time.

Great to see swimming doing well.

Random DU hockey stats:

-Rhett Rakhshani has 20 points and is the first Pioneer to hit the National Top 20 in scoring (Tied for #20). His 9 goals are good for #15 and his 5 PPGs are good for 9th nationally. He has 3 GWGs which ties him for third nationally.

-The next Pio on the scoring list is Ruegsegger, who sits 51st in national scoring.

-Chevy is #6 nationally in GAA at 1.77, second in saves percentage at .940, and second in winning percentage at .850

- DU's offense (3.0 GPG) sits at #21 nationally.

-DU's Defense is #22 nationally at 2.69 GPG given up

-DU PP is 23rd nationally at 19.4%

-DU PK is 10th nationally at 86.9%

- Joe Colborne is a -6 along with Brian Gifford. Would be nice to see some improvement here

- No DU freshman are in the top 50 NCAA rookies in scoring. Time to pick up some points, boys.

Analysis:

DU is a decent offensive team, but not the 3.5-4.0 GPG team I expected. Rock and Ruegs are leading the show as expected from seniors. Salazar's point drop off has hurt. Weircioch being often hurt or recovering has affected his production. Martin has really improved from last year. Colborne is obviously capable of great things, but has been streaky this year. Maiani also is streaky. Power play is improving, which helps. Would like to see more offense from Drew Shore, Shawn Ostrow, and more contributions from third and fourth line.

Defensively, DU is about where I expected them to be. Wrenn and Donovan have made great strides adjusting to the WCHA, while the others d-men (Nutini, Ryder, Brookwell) are what they are - effective and no frills. Philips is still an adventure out there when he plays. PK is terrific, and really helps the Pios stay high in the rankings.

Goaltending is a mixed bag. Chevy has been outstanding, and Murray has been a major disappointment in limited action. The Pios will go as far as Chevy can take them this year.

While waiting for Ruegs to make the Century Club, thought I'd take a peek at how little sis, Becca, is doing as the primary goaltender for the Wisconsin women.
WCHA stats
2 Becca Ruegsegger FR 5- 3- 1 .611 winning %
GAA 2.10 Sav % .922

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I have a theory on how DU has been able to make this happen. What does DU have that virtually every Division I School doesn't have?

Free Beer at Jordan's during the Denver Cup for the first one to get the right answer.

Also, Wiercioch cleared to practice tomorrow per Chambes' Blog.

Was wondering, so that is good news for Peter.

Maybe she should be backing up Chevy.

You folks that dis JP for his support of Mikey are incomprehensible to me. While i'm sorry DU didn't win, it's easy to understand JP's support for his brother. It finally makes sense when i remember that y'all think that the team mascot is an important issue. imvho NOT!
but thanks for the pumpkin, jailbait.
Its a joke. Of course he should support his brother.

Do we have to draw you a map every time we make a comment?

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

At 10-4-2 overall and 8-2-2 in league play, Denver is looking good heading into the second half of the season. Assuming the Pioneers can follow the old WCHA adage of winning at home and splitting on the road in league play the rest of the way, and winning three of the four remaining non-conference games (which they should do), it would put DU at 24-10-4, which should put the Pios in pretty decent NCAA/PWR position heading into the playoffs.

The critical stretch for Denver will be the back to back Wisconsin and North Dakota trips in late January. If the Pios can just win 2 of those 4 games, they should be in good shape.

If they stumble at home in league play, it means they need to step up and win an extra road game to make it up.

Remaining games projection:

Dec 11-12 @Minnesota Duluth (split)
Jan 01 Nebraska Omaha (win)
Jan 02 Boston College (lose)
Jan 8-9 Alaska Anchorage (sweep)
Jan 22-23 @Wisconsin (split)
Jan 29-30 @North Dakota (split)
Feb 05 Mercyhurst (win)
Feb 06 @Air Force (win)
Feb 12-13 Minnesota (sweep)
Feb 19-20 Michigan Tech (sweep)
Feb 26-27 @Minnesota State (split)
Mar 05 Colorado College (win)
Mar 06 @Colorado College (lose)
