Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Chevy has to be back for the UND series. Thank God that DU has a bye week coming up to get healthy. I don't think we have played one series with a full squad. Maiani's suspension, Colborne's broken finger, Chevy's cut leg and now Wiercioch. Those players are arguably 4 of our top 5 guys and Chevy is the best player on the team this year, bar none.

DU's goalie stats both conference and overall. The stats don't lie.

Are those stats updated from this past series? Murrays stats seem too high for his performance this past weekend. His save % on Saturday was .625.

You guys know that I always root for DU when they aren't playing UAA. We have so many relatives in Colorado, I always pull for them, and they are my second favorite team. I hope Chevy heals up soon, that was a very unfortunate accident (but good timing for UAA).

Good luck the rest of the season, until our teams meet again that is.

I think Murray will be a fine goalie in due time, as evidenced by the two good games that he had this year. But he's been very inconsistent, with a propensity to give up goals in bunches. Lalonde needs more time to work with him. When Murray gets some aspects of his game corrected, he'll be a good back up to Chevy, and worthy of the occassional start, maybe once every four or five games. But for now, we all know Chevy is da man.

I'd love to see Chevy back in the net ASAP, but I don't care too much whether he plays against North Dakota. It's a long season, and I'd rather see him take his time, and make sure that he's 100% when he comes back, even if it costs us a game or two in the meantime.

So how did Wiercoich get hurt, anyway? Was it a cheap hit? Is there a prognosis on when he'll be back?

They are updated stats thru Saturday's game.

Depends on who you ask. Here is what Donald put on his blog about the situation this afternoon. :)

The first thing to talk about today is the hip-check that Kane Lafranchise put on Patrick Wiercioch. The idiot zebras we had decided it was a penalty. That was their first mistake. Their 2nd was to initially hand out (as announced at the rink) a DQ. There is ONE source to trust with regard to statistics in NCAA college hockey games. That source is the official boxscore. This isn't the boxscore from a newspaper nor is it the boxscore from an SID at a school.

Those two sources can contain mistakes for one reason. WCHA referees (and I imagine all other leagues as well) are allowed to adjust their scoresheets prior to signing and submitting them. Newspapers and SID's want to get their stories out as quickly as possible. So it's understandable that from time to time they'll have discrepancies versus the official boxscore. So what does the official boxscore show about the Lafranchise/Wiercioch incident? It shows that Kane was called for a 5 minute major for "Clipping" and a 10 minute game misconduct.

Kane will NOT be missing the next game. There has to be a DQ for that to happen. There was no DQ. The likely explanation (and there is lots of precedent for this) that the referees reviewed video of the event after the game was over. They adjusted their initial call. It happens all the time in the WCHA. You will never see them take a penalty completely off the board. They have to defend their initial call on some level. So even if they thought it was a completely clean hip-check after reviewing it (and that's likely the case) they couldn't take it off the board. And since they'd sent Kane off they had to defend that. But they did so by going with the smallest misconduct available. The official boxscore reflects that.

Kane did not foul Wiercioch. It's that plain and simple. Assertions made otherwise come from people who did not witness the event. Wiercioch played effectively after the event. No doubt the hit stunned him somewhat initially. Getting flipped end-over-end will do that to you. But his knee WAS NOT INJURED as it simply wasn't involved; any inury would have been evident in his skating.

I watched closely anticipating all this sort of hoohaw. He was not injured. He was ready and willing to play immediately after the referees sorted out what they were calling. The referees however did not allow him to making him take a seat on the bench. When the trainer comes out to attend to you ... you have to go to the bench before playing again. In any case, the next shift change saw Wiercioch hop over the boards nimbly and play a large portion of the 5 minute power play.

Any assertions made otherwise you may or may not see from George Gwozdecky are P R O P A G A N D A . DU has a bye week. Gwoz may or may not choose to "play this up" by claiming (as he did post-game) that Wiercioch knee was involved. There's little to no risk for Gwoz in doing so. He knows Wiercioch will be ready for their next series against UND in two weeks. But why let the UND folks know that. Coaches in this league love to play fast and loose with injury reports when it suits them. Gwoz is the master manipulator by which all others are measured.

"Donald" is a first class, frostbitten jerk.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Part of the DQ controversy is our radio announcer(s. The former EGulls announcer too.) Stinkey has been prone to casually label every major a DQ. I was half asleep and ill-temepered, but i might have heard him throw out the DQ word Saturday, even before the PA guy had announced the penalties. I couldn't hear if that is what went out to the arena, let alone say how it was entered in the official record even before it was signed.
Sometimes it is medically hard to distinguish frostbitten from opinionated...

Often times, DQ's that are assigned at the time of the penalty are changed to Game Misconducts (DQs carry a mandatory suspension for the team's next game) when the official scoresheets are signed after the game. Sometimes, it's because the officials get another look at the video, and sometimes, it's because they really don't want to penalize a team further with a suspension for the next week. With the WCHA so tightly contested from top to bottom, a missing player can make a huge difference in an outcome.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Okay, the Pios have a bye week, so it's time for the coaches, medical staff and players to make some 'fix-it' repairs to a team that could really use it...

Here's my top 10 'fix it' items for the team to fix over the break:

1. Fix Chevy's leg so he's ready for the UND series.
2. Fix Murray's glove hand, five hole and his entire mental approach.
3. Fix the power play. There is no reason for it to sputter as it does now.
4. Fix the finishing around the net. This team should be a 4 to 4.5 GPG offense.
5. Fix the tendency to get caught overloaded on the PK on one side of the ice.
6. Fix Colborne's finger, so he can make plays again
7. Fix the mental make up of the team to compete for 120+ minutes per weekend.
8. Fix the defensive rotation so the top six players can get cohesive
9. Fix the faceoff problem - DU really misses Bozak here
10. Fix the breakout to get into transition faster - Weircioch is crucial here.

Gotta say, that's a lot of "fixin".

This post looks very similiar to a lot of mine last season for CC. ;)

Swami's list should be sent to the coaches: My comments, well...

Don't rush him he needs to be on top of his game for the rest of the season. A loss to UND now is preferable to one in the Final Five or NCAA's. Honestly no loss to UND is best.
2. Fix Murray's glove hand, five hole and his entire mental approach.
Definitely a work in progress.
3. Fix the power play. There is no reason for it to sputter as it does now.
Didn't we have this same discussion last year? That should be enough time to figure it out.
4. Fix the finishing around the net. This team should be a 4 to 4.5 GPG offense.
Couldn't agree more.
5. Fix the tendency to get caught overloaded on the PK on one side of the ice.
I believe you
6. Fix Colborne's finger, so he can make plays again
The bye week may help solve this problem
7. Fix the mental make up of the team to compete for 120+ minutes per weekend.
Yes, Yes, a thousand times yes. Chemistry, work ethic, mental toughness
8. Fix the defensive rotation so the top six players can get cohesive
What's going on with Ryder and Brookwell?
9. Fix the faceoff problem - DU really misses Bozak here
Who steps up here?
10. Fix the breakout to get into transition faster - Weircioch is crucial here
Isn't the transition game a key to DU's success?

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Thanks, Suze, but I don't think I'll rely on Donald's evaluation of the Wiercioch hit if I want to know the reality of the situation. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it, though. Did you see what happened?

As to our power play--I agree there's no good excuse for the sputtering. We're loaded with talented offensive players who should know how to put the biscuit in the net with a man advantage. Plus...Wiercioch on the point! Gwoz seems to have trouble getting power plays clicking, as we have this discussion every year. I'm all for getting the freshmen experience, but I think he may be relying too much on them on key situations, like the power play. I think I noticed 3 freshmen on the PP at one time.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Swami's list should be sent to the coaches

Denver has one of the best coaching staffs in the game today. They know exactly what needs fixing on the team. But the true test of success is in the game-day execution by the players of the solutions the coaches generate.

From a coaching standpoint, what worries me a little this year is that other teams seem to adjust faster and better to Denver after the Friday game, than Denver does in adjusting to the opponent on the second night of a series. This is where the coaching staff needs to stretch a little more.

I also don't know what promises were made to some recruits about playing time - that practice is likely costing the team in the short term. Some of these players are simply not yet polished enough to deserve the playing time they've been given.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

One of the difficulties that quality offensive players have on the power play is the tendency to slow things down and then overpass in looking for the perfect shot opportunity. That might work in the juniors, where there are more bad penalty killers, but it doesn't work as well at this level, where most penalty killers are not going to give up many clear shots.

I don't think DU needs to shoot more, but I'd like to see much faster puck movement to expose better shooting lanes. DU has 3-4 guys that are capable of one-timing shots off the pass, which can be very hard to defend.

DU also needs to be more physical in the crease area to get after more rebounds.

I did see it, it happened very close to where I sit. I have it on my DVR and have watched it over and over, even in slow motion. LaFranchise came across the ice laterally, he bent over and Wiercioch flipped right over LaFranchise's HIP, as far as I can see there was no knee involved.

My husband thought it was a knee initially (at the game) but after watching the replay he now thinks it was a clean hip check. Opposing fans are never going to agree on hits like this, and it really does no good to argue it over and over. The fact is, he continued to play and skated just fine. Watching him, there was no indication of him being injured in the least.

Since it was a clipping penalty, it doesn't matter what part of LaFranchise hit Wiercioch; it just matters where he hit Wiercioch. If it was below the waist(which I'm guessing it might be if he flipped), then it's a penalty.

It sounds like UAA could really use a lesson on how to hit people in the torso.
