Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Pioneer women's soccer team lost to #2 overall Portland 4-0 at the NCAA tourney first round game before 3,000 fans in Portland, Ore. The Pilots are 19-1 on the year so the whuppin' is not much of a surprise. DU only had 2 shots on in the game, but both were great shots by a Freshman, Kaitlin Bast, that forced the Portland goalie to make great saves.

Good year for the Pioneer women (17-6-1) that once again ends on some higher seeds' field in the NCAA tourney.

So, DTP has the UAA fans' evidence up on his blog that the hit on Wiercioch was clean. Pretty shady evidence, if you ask me, and does not come close to "exonerating" LaFrenchy (or whatever his name is).

Looks like other hits that have been called similarly over the years, so I will defer to the on-ice officials that their call seems appropriate.

DTP also states that it could appear that there was knee-to-knee contact, for what that's worth... (or, he says that someone could argue that in one frame it appears knee-to-knee, but the other frames prove otherwise, even though he just rewinds basically the same frame.)

I just don't get the apparant collective obsession some of their people have over this incident. Look at Suze, a lady our posters generally like, who for some reason, spent 20 posts or so trying to convince us our coach and one of our players were "lying" about this incident. Not hyping, or game playing but "lying." Why would an otherwise reasonable person think that by repeating the slander over and over, she'd eventually win us over? I mean, that reminds me of the moron who keeps hitting his head on the wall because it feels so good when he stops.

Seems to me, if it were a solid hip-to-hip check, that Wiercioch would have been flattened or knocked backwards -- not flipped forward.

I'll just take care of it for them. 3....2....1, cue the UAA fans' response: "You obviously have no clue and do not understand hockey..."

I was watching on Pioneer Vision, which we know can be an adventure, but my first reaction was "I hope he's not hurt," and my second reaction was "while this hit is a crowd pleaser, it's also an unnecessary shot," given that they were winning a laugher at the time. Seemed to me Pepe Le Peu was showing off for the home fans.

But where their analysis breaks down completely is the claim, based only on a piece of tape, that Patrick COULDN'T have been hurt, therefore any assertion to the contrary is a LIE. This is nonsense on steroids, you ask me.

To me, it still seems like the refs viewed it as unnecessary and, thus, a deliberate attempt to injure. It's their judgement and once judged that way, they must call a major. Le Peu's knee was leading, so even if there was hip-to-hip contact (with knee-to-knee to begin with), it's still a penalty.

I think erring on the side of protecting players from injury is not a bad thing, if indeed that's what happened here.

And I think we've got some posters who understand hockey perfectly, you for instance, Swami, DG and many others. It's not a matter of "understanding" hockey it's a matter of drawing different conclusions based on the same evidence.

In the end, that is a primary responsibility of the refs -- to control the game in a fashion that does not lead to injuries based on recklessness.

Genoway hurt for UND last night on a check from behind by Marvin. He was down on the ice for a while and did not return to the game. Marvin is out tonight for SCSU for the hit. I haven't seen any reports on Genoway but next weekend against DU both team's could be missing their top d-man.

I sure hate to see that. Hope his injuries aren't serious.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I just think back to the UVM series earlier this year, where Ruegsegger got destroyed by one of their HUGE d-men with a hip check. The difference was that the UVM guy did NOT lead with his knee.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Looked somewhat similar to the hit Sean Hill put on Mike Aikens back in the early '90s that ended Aikens' career. I hope Genoway is OK...

Yeah, it looks like he elbowed him in the back of the neck and mashed him face first into the boards/glass.

That's almost exactly the way Aikens ended up with a broken neck -- Hill took his forearm and drove Aikens' head into the glass.

The elbow certainly came up. Looks like Genoway may not be hurt seriously, hope so.

I was in the Arena press box the night after Aiken's injury. And some Wisconsin punk made himself appear to be even more jerk like by asking ME
why the big fuss? I replied, truthfully, that I'd been in a meeting the night before and hadn't seen the game. But whenever a guy is taken off on a stretcher and has his career ended, fair minded people want to know why.

Dirty posted a video of the it in the SCSU/UND thread.

I hate North Dakota, that's no secret...but I hate cheap shot hits like that even more. I hope Genoway is ok and able to play again soon. Marvin needs to be suspended for a while. That was an obvious attempt to injure.

It's listed as a game misconduct, which (at this point) would not lead to any suspension. That hit is probably worse than Le Peu's, so if LaFrenchy got a game then Marvin should also.

Again, back to Frenchy Le Peu, he probably did NOT deserve the DQ but a game misconduct was definitely warranted, since it does not matter if you make hip-to-hip contact which occurred after knee-to-knee. Dude just needs to make sure he makes good, solid hip-to-hip contact and not lead with his knee.
