Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Hockey talk in Delaware: Had breakfast with some high-ups in athletic department as well as some connected alums. Former TV star present.(connected alums follow this site) 100% support for all Monty has done and what he will do in future. They feel any DU fan who is worried about the future should not be concerned and enjoy the coming years. I got the impression that they are more convinced today that Monty was the right choice then they were on the day he was hired.
Boone was at the breakfast, w/o costume yet. Hopefully you guys have seen the hockey shoot Boone did with Monty on DU ice. Before the shoot, Boone told Monty his saga and status and Monty replied: Cool, roll the cameras!! Apparently Monty, his wife, and kids are very popular and visible on the DU campus.
Okay now, Let's get #30!!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Shore and Donovan both score in 5-4 victory over Germany.
Team Germany answered 1:48 later with a goal on a rush, but Drew Shore (Denver, Colo./University of Denver/Florida Panthers) put the U.S. back in front with a shorthanded marker at 7:18. Team USA created a turnover just inside its defensive blue line and Jeff Petry (Ann Arbor, Mich./Michigan State University/Edmonton Oilers) sent an outlet pass to Shore in the neutral zone. Shore raced down the left wing, made a nifty move around a German defenseman and slid the puck through Aus den Birken’s legs to make it 2-1 USA.
A Germany power-play marker at 10:29 pulled the game back to even before Team USA answered with a power-play goal of its own at 12:53 to jump ahead, 3-2. Gaudreau picked up the puck at the right circle, turned to his forehand and feathered a cross-ice pass to Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla./University of Denver/N.Y. Islanders). Donovan one-timed the pass into the net for his second goal of the tournament.

From iihfworlds.com
but better was to come at the other end when Drew Shore's willingness to lead short-handed surges paid off. He pulled a dazzling piece of stick-handling on Constantin Braun before applying a close-range finish for America's 2-1 goal.

Modestly, Shore shared the acclaim with Jeff Petry, who started the move. "It was a good pass," he said. "Here on the bigger ice surface there is a lot of time to make a move so I as able to work it low and get it past the goaltender's five hole."

You can watch Drew's goal at:

USA finishes prelim in either 2nd or 3rd place. Waiting for Russia vs Belarus result.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Ok, that is just weird about Miller. Hasn't he only been in the Madison job for less than a year? And why would he come back to Colorado to take an assistant coach's job? Seems like a sizeable demotion, unless his family absolutely wants to live in Colorado. And I mean a demotion, not only from his Madison job. Most would say that being an assistant at CC is a bit of a demotion from being an assistant at DU (salary-wise, smaller city/bigger city, success of programs, etc.) Strange stuff, we'll see what this is all about.

BTW, I didn't realize until now that CC had hired a new head coach! Don't know what to think...seems like a good hire for them??

University of Denver women’s lacrosse junior Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) was voted to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America Second Team. Jill is only the 4th DU woman to be named an All American by the IWLCA. dupioneers.com

Congrats to Jill!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

"And I, for one, welcome our new (Tiger) insect overlords"

Overlords, indeed.

Hey, since we're talking about all kind of sports here, I will note that Denver's Tonje Daffinrud is tied for FIRST after the 1st round of the women's golf NCAA championship. I believe she is tied with one player from Stanford and one from USC. I don't know diddly about golf. But I think there are 2 more rounds to go. Impressive (and I'm sure unprecedented) for a DU golfer to be atop the leaderboard at this stage. We'll see how she holds up!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Tonje's being tied for the lead is great. Tonje shot 3 under with a double bogey. I'm excited for her and DU. A few years back, Sherlock and Kemptner did real well for the gals individually, but I don't remember anyone having had the lead after round 1. As a team we came in 5th overall after having won a regional. Winning a regional was huge; it's like getting to the final 4 in hoops.
How was Vegas? I know books have bets this year for the final 4.

GO DU LACROSSE DG coming to Baltimore. Boone outfit in my car trunk.

Just don't get pulled over by suspicious cops on some traffic beef. And if you do, have an answer ready when they ask: "Do you mind if I look in your trunk?"

Hey, Vegas was awesome. Didn't get to bet on the Pioneers' last game when I was out there, but oh well.

Looks like Tonje isn't having as good of a second day as her first, but maybe she will stay in the top 10???

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

74 today, T8 overall at +1, 6 strokes off the lead

Still a helluva showing so far, hopefully she can regroup and put in a solid round tomorrow.

More Honors for Gabe Levin

Sophomore forward Gabe Levin has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. Gabe was also named to the NCHC Scholar-Athlete team as well as Academic All Conference. Gabe is now eligible for the Academic All American team.
Levin was selected to the NCAA Division I District 7 Team, which includes schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. A 3.30 GPA is the minimum requirement. Gabe's 3.96 easily meets that standard. (Even if Larkin Jacobson's 4.0 beat him out for highest GPA on the team.)

BTW, Tyler Ruegsegger was an Academic All American. Third team as a sophomore, 2nd team as a junior and first team as a senior
