Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Green menace? That is not the issue. The issue is safety, and food preparation. Have they added extra support beneath the concrete at Magness? More importantly, have they added 1,000 extra pounds of hot dogs to the menu tonight? North Dakota is here, and accommodations must be made! It's XXL weekend.

Also, I predict 3 points for the Pioneers. An 11-11 tie tonight, and a 24-2 win for DU tomorrow.

Go DU.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Gonna be pretty tough getting slapped around by someone without a name.

If that happens, you are correct. How strange it would be, to get slapped around by a nameless force. I don't think it will happen, though. But ***, who knows, that is one of the things I don't like about college hockey--how can a team win 5-1 one night and lose the next night. It's really kind of stupid, this unpredictability.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

I hope DU can play just as level headed tomorrow. Nice job by North Dakota, letting the centerman on the #1 line get sent to the showers for a stupid hit early in the game....that's not how you help your team win. On the post game, they said UND will be angry and upset tomorrow - GOOD. Rack up those penalties! DU supposed to play Jalliet in net.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

North Dakota certainly didn't look like a number 1 team tonight. How can a team play so undisciplined? Oh yeah, it's Hackstol... Fed right into DU's hands. Kudos to Montgomery for having his team better prepared. And Cowley was outstanding. Expect a better effort tomorrow night from North Dakota. DU better play Cowley again, and the rest of the team will have to play even better, especially on the power play, for the sweep. Great job tonight, Pios.

Yesterday's 'Jersey of the Game Award' goes to the intrepid Denver fan who sported a Lars Paulgaard sweater. Ahhh, the Lars Paulgaard Era....I remember it so fondly. Probably the most influential player in D.U. history. Well, apart from Joey Brehm.

Go Denver. Sweep the NoDaks. :D

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Curious as to how Adam Plant has been this year. Would have loved to see him at Harvard, but I hope he has success at Denver as well. How has he performed?

Sounds as if the Sioux did not play especially well last night, but this team is not the type that will look like a #1 team most nights. They do not have a lot of top-end talent, especially at forward. They usually win their games with solid goaltending, good defense, and hardworking forwards who have decent talent and experience up and down the lineup. Losing their fist line center early hurt, and they are without their best defensive Dman, but even with those players in the lineup, this team will not impress may as a powerhouse. It just isn't. It's a pretty lunch-pail team, but one I really like. They do not play as physical a game as recent Sioux teams and they have not been in the box too much this year, believe it or not. But against a team like Denver, they have to stay out of the box. Otherwise, they will be chasing a lot and losing any advantage they might have with 4 dependable lines.

This is a good rivalry to have, with UMinn and UW in a different conference and absent from the schedule, for the most part. Hopefully, it stays intense.

Interesting that you should ask this question. While attending last night's game I paid particular attention to Plant during several of his shifts on the ice. Although it is still quite early in his division 1 college hockey career, I was deeply impressed with how quick he is on his skates and how much speed he's able to generate getting from Point A to Point B. I can envision Plant being a major contributor as an "offensive defenseman" during his college career. There is no getting around the fact that for a defenseman Plant is small, but in certain situations his speed may enable him to overcome his lack of size.

Junior Nolan Zajac has played as both a defenseman and a wing in his career--particularly last season when Denver stuggled to score goals--and Plant strikes me as having the speed, puck handling ability and skating acumen to see duty as a wing if coach Jim Montgomery chooses to go that route. In short, when Denver fans attend a game this season I strongly suggest they take the time to pay close attention to Plant when he is on the ice. He gives every impression of being a player who will "run" the power play from the blue line as his career progresses at Denver.

Again, it's very early in his collegiate career, but I think Denver has recruited a solid player in Adam Plant.

He has passed the eye test per ASaaG and taken a firm hold of a spot on the blueline.
Coach Monty has been very complimentary in post game intervews and even went so far to say he is a LaLeggia type--size, speed, skills. Being compared to the National Rookie of the Year(2012) and an All American(2014) not too shabby,

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

It's always fun and nostalgic to watch Army/Navy even though the games no longer have any national significance. It's the quality of the kids and the rivalry that's important. I thought Army had a chance to end their losing streak today. It'll happen sooner or later. And in the interest of accuracy, we should remember my great nephew's AFA Falcons beat 'em both this year.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

No offense, but I saw that the army-navy game was on, and wondered who is still watching that game. One of those old rivalries, but without current relevance...its tough to find the interest. Guys in the military acadamies have much different opinion than mine, no doubt. North Dakota looked much better tonight, a couple two on one's and their ability to finish did the pios in. ND goalie was good, but most shots were right at his gut. And I will never understand the goalie rotation...you got a guy who just beat a good team the previous night with a super solid game, and you don't play him the next night. Jaillet played ok, but there is no good reason to sit Cowley for the sake of the sacred rotation. One last positive:..DU's good energy level when down 3-0. They kept on the pressure, just couldn't get that magical second goal.

Jaillet played "OK"??? Huh? He kept DU in the game when it could have easily gotten out of hand quickly...It could have been 3-0 midway through the 1st period. Most of the talk around the rink in regards to Cowley is pretty much in agreement that he leaves way too many rebounds. Those rebounds, with the way UND came out, would have likely put DU in a way bigger hole early. For Cowley to be the clear #1, he needs to improve in this area of his game. Can't be leaving all those rebounds right in the slot in a one-and-done in the NCAA's...

Interesting...I didn't think that Jaillet played that great, but maybe I missed some good saves that happened on the other side of the rink from where I was sitting. In any case, Cowley is our best goalie--.927 save ptg vs. .904, 1.89 GAA vs. 2.51, and 2 shutouts vs no shutouts. If Cowley left a lot of juicy rebounds for UND in the first game, the defensemen must have done a good job in clearing them out!

Jaillet is a fine goalie. But the 2nd game vs. North Dakota at home with an opportunity to sweep is a big deal, and I don't know why you don't play your best goalie in that situation. I thought Gwozdecky was occasionally stubborn with sticking to the goalie rotation, and I just hope that Montgomery plays the goalie that gives the team the best chance to win, especially in important games like Saturday's.

Anyone hear anything about Grant Arnold? It looked like he left the game in the 3rd with an injury, and it didn't look very promising the way he left the ice.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Yahoo reports Beau Bennett's "couple of weeks" to return due to a lower body injury has now become indefinite.
And now... now he is being tesred for mumps:eek:

In the postgame, Monty mentioned Grant had an ongoing "issue". Wasn't sure to what extent or whether this was involved.

Yeah... DU had 15 of the game's first 17 shots fired at their goalie with probably more quality chances than UND had the whole entire Friday game...Yet Jaillet somehow sucked? He was DU's sole positive for the first 15 minutes of Saturday's game. All 3 goals, he was hung out by a combo of solid UND action and lackluster DU 'd'.

You may not get what the coaching staff is doing...but it doesn't matter what YOU get. I also remember you thinking Big Sam was nothing special at one time.

Also, don't get all googly-goo over personal stats...that's really irrelevant right now...and if you so desire stats, check WINNING percentage. After all, winning is the end-all stat...

I never said Jailett sucked. I said he played OK on Saturday, and I said he is a fine goalie. If you think he is better than Cowley, that's cool. But most people would probably disagree. Part of the fun of discussions, you know...people having different opinions and all.

Hmmmm...I don't recall saying much negative about Sam. I'm sure he had a few bad games, but Sam was so consistent that it's hard to fathom anyone saying that Sam wasn't an excellent goalie, especially over the long haul. DU has been so good in the goalie department for so long (Dubie, Manno, Berkhoel, Brittain, Cowley, others), that there really isn't much room to criticize the goalies themselves. There has, however, been room to criticize the coaches' decisions about who to play over the years. Once again...differences of opinion are OK.

If GAA and saves percentage are irrelevant in evaluating goalies, then...hmmm....not sure what to say about that. If Jailett tears it up, I'm sure you will remind me about my libelous statements. Ha...all I'm doing is saying that I think Cowley is playing better right now, and that Cowley deserved two starts against ND.

I see you are getting a bit riled up, so I will peace out. Will check back, though, to see if anyone has any injury reports...kind of worried about Arnold, and hope he is OK.
