Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

The last time we played BC in the NCAA Semifinals
March 15, 1973
W, Denver 10 Boston College 4

There was a decided talent imbalance in those days. By '73, the Golden Era was drawing to a close. But it was fun while it lasted. We used to look forward to playing BC/BU the way the Wehrmacht looked forward to playing Poland.

I've told the story before about the time BU came out to play a series. Their SID was also their play by play guy and he spent the entire weekend working assiduously to prove what a jerk he was. "No way we can lose these games", etc. After giving up 10 goals and scoring 2 on the weekend, one young announcer (who shall go nameless) suggested to this dipwad (with the rest of the media applauding) that the next time they came west, maybe they should bring the varsity.

I am planning on being in attendance!!

I'm coming up from NJ. I know of at least 1 other Jersey alum coming up. DU is having a pre-game party in Worcester at a restaurant name Restaurant 99. I expect if we make Philly, Boone will be there. He was there for last spring's Lax tournament. Hopefully some of you guys are on Facebook and have seen videos of that. They were probably also on DG's blog, which we miss a great deal.

I was in Boston for the 73' tourney. I didn't remember that we won the semis so handily. I do remember us losing to Wisky in the finals, although we were the better team. Wisky was just so sky high riding the momentum of their Semifinal win. They were down 3 goals to Cornell with 2 minutes to go. I sat with Peter McNab for the game and twice we were walking out, only to have Wisky score a goal each time and bring us back to our seats. In OT, Cornell had a 2 on zero breakaway and failed to score.

Old Pio--nice old stories, but the entertainment value could be heightened without jokes about the Nazi's overrunning Poland. Just a thought!

Anyway...too bad those days of domination over the eastern teams are long gone. The best one that I enjoyed was DU beating UNH 9-2 in the NCAA tournament a few years after I started following DU hockey. But when RIT beats DU in the NCAA's, you know the landscape has changed.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

DU can win the regional by duplicating the scores from the last game played against the opponent.

First, DU 4 BC 2

Then,
DU 5 UML 1
or
DU 3 MSU(Kato) 2

With you on all your thoughts Pablo. Back in the day, our Canadian imports plus some Minnesota kids versus the eastern colleges prep school kids was no-contest. I was embarrassed when we lost to an eastern team, which was not very often. In a way I still am; for at DU, we win championships.

Probably a difference in generations here, but losing to Jerry York coached BC doesn't cause me much embarrassment, especially in a year like this. Former D-II Lowell is pretty good this year too, and Mankato is not a joke, should we be so lucky as to play one of them on Sunday.

Getting swept by Scott Owens and CC? Different story. Can't believe we overcame that to get this far

Would it have been better if I'd said: "DU looked forward to playing BU/BC the way Duke looked forward to playing Mercer?" Oops.

I take it neither version of To Be or Not To Be appears on your list of all time great films:

Josef Tura: [disguised as Colonel Ehrhardt] "I can't tell you how delighted we are to have you here."

Professor Alexander Siletsky: "May I say, my dear Colonel, that it's good to breathe the air of the Gestapo again. You know, you're quite famous in London, Colonel. They call you Concentration Camp Ehrhardt."

Josef Tura: "Ha ha. Yes, yes... we do the concentrating and the Poles do the camping."

On the other hand, I never thought Hogan's Heroes was funny. :)

Brief interview with Joe Scott and Monty on Denver Channel 4.
RT @DU_Pioneers: Did you miss @DUCoachScott and @DUCoachMonty on @CBSDenver @XFINITY Monday Live? Watch it here http://j.mp/1l4q9HT

There's a 3 min newsbreak at about the 10 min. mark, but they do come back briefly after that.

Did you know Monty coached BC's Johnny Gaudreau at Dubuque?

Monty has definitely gotten better with the media over the course of the year. I thought he did an especially good job handling the Gwozdecky question, which is such a pointless thing to ask about, in my opinion.

Seems to me that an @S$-whooping by CC has spurred the Jelly Donuts on to bigger and better things before. Could it happen again? Why not - it's just four games, and someone has to win them all. Good luck to the Pioneers...

Old Pio, you have lost me with the WWII references, but I will just assume it's something vaguely offensive, and move on. Nothing to see here...

Thanks for the good wishes, Roger. Gotta give Owens credit for having DU's number in games where CC should have no business winning (and sweeping!) Probably good that CC has the Gold Pan--DU seems to lose that thing whenever they make a good run in the NCAA's.

Listen you officious bloviating font of irrelevant twaddle, [but I mean that in only the most demeaning way], the Pioneers are t-h-i-s close to playing the Boston Yorks so knock off the waxing poetic about the Gestapo and start putting on your game face.

[P.S. Never thought Hogan's Heroes was funny? That'll be two weeks in the cooler for you.]

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Beau Bennett recalled by the Pens today--played 3 games for WBS in the AHL.
and
- After posting back-to-back shutouts for WBS, Peter Mannino’s shutout streak ended on Saturday versus Utica at 194:48.
Guess he's out of the doghouse now.

Being "offended" by lame World War II references must be something of a full time job, no?
