Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I'm just glad DU has the type of dedicated fan base that doesn't prematurely bail on their season...

Oh, wait...What did I just say?

I could honestly rant and will not...well, just a teenytiny bit....

All the people who chose to not support our amazing Pioneer Hockey Program this season, for what ever lame reason, are just, well....LAME. Monty is every bit the coach we could ever need.

GO DU!!!

Guilty as charged, my apologies!!!!

"Morning safari findings"

Chris Dilks‏@ChrisDilks
Dan Doremus was named most outstanding player. I voted Zac Larraza. Could have been Ty Loney too.
OMG They just showed a clip of Gwoz hoping the boards in Grand Forks on the jumbotron!

@1DanMyers I'm pretty sure drunken North Dakota fans have crushed the will to live of the elevator operator here.

From helmet cam-=-On WMU's disallowed goal, Murray waves off explanation, referee calls "Offsides" as he leaves WMU bench area. But it surely looked like Leggs pushed into Sam=interference.

Josh Archibald won't score on DU next year--going to the Pens.

In case you hadn't heard Pioneers are going to the NCAA's--Northeast region. Deposed the ugly helmets from Ann Arbor for the 15th seed. (MaKES IT EVEN BETTER )

Chris, was going to respond as one of the faithful. But I, too, found myself in rant mode. Decided to enjoy the moment.

I think he was yelling "outside," for where the faceoff was going to be.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Well, the joy of being a Cub fan is that the fact that the team is having a tough year doesn't take away from my support.

Going into the NCAA tournament, I think the bad is that we open up against BC, who are awful tall cotton. The good is that I think that the late recovery, the inspired team play, and the fact that we are putting on our dancing skates at all makes for a pretty good final outcome to the season.

That said, I really believe that Sam Brittain, with a little help from guys like Leggs, Didier, and Zajac, can shut out anybody on any given day. Add to that that we have a number of guys capable of scoring on even the toughest defenses and goalies, and DU is in this game. I have to think that BC feels like they got the toughest draw of any 1 seed, and I'd like to see our guys drive that point home. (I readily accept that North Dakota fans will dismiss this premise out of hand.)

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Ha, I guess we DU fans should have our own awards for best and worst fans, most faithful, least faithful, most critical, least critical, best Monty supporter, worst Monty detractor, first to give up on the season, last to give up on the season. Or we could all just realize that we're all DU hockey fans, and enjoy the success the team is having. Tall order indeed vs. BC...but I feel more comfortable being a 4 seed coming in on a roll, than a 1 seed that's coasting and waiting to be upset. I kinda like our chances vs. BC, and it's hard for me to imagine DU going in and laying an egg. It should at least be a competitive game, and I'll predict a 3-2 DU win.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Hard to believe with so many good teams for both programs over the past 15 years or so we haven't had any meetings yet in the NCAAs. Finally going to happen. Good luck.

Anyone coming East to support the Pios? PuckSwami? Can we expect to see Boone?

Alas I can't make it out there from Denver this weekend, but I do know of at least one fellow alum who lives nearby and will make it for Saturday's game.

Wow, I hadn't thought about the lack of BC and DU meetings in the NCAA's. Kind of odd. Though I wonder if it has been partly due to the fact that DU and BC have typically been higher seeds, not playing each other in the first round, and then DU has not advanced much beyond the first and second rounds since 2005. In any case, it will be a fun match up. Hopefully DU as the lower seed gets to wear their crimson unis, and BC plays in white.

If the past is any indication, most of us DU fans will wait and see if we make it to the Frozen Four, and not travel for the regional action. I stand corrected--way to represent, Dmann!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I am really excited about this weekend. I find it so much better to have a mediocre season and finish big than to be strong all season long and disappoint quickly in the post-season.

If DU can stay out of the box, Brittain be on his normally great form, and get three players to contribute offensively, I think they'll be in good shape. Do I expect DU to win the regional? Um, well I will say my excitement will be so much more pronounced if they do.

Going back a little further than 15 years: DU and BC met in the first semi-final game of the '68 Frozen Four. My friend, the late Frank Daly, got the only start of his career in goal and posted a 4-1 win. Incidentally, it was during that Frozen Four that Tim Sheehy, the first American to whom Murray had offered a scholarship (he had dual citizenship) complained that he wanted a college coach and instead got a priest. He was referring to BC's legendary John "Snooks" Kelly. Sheehy was on the '72 US silver medal winning team at Sapporo.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Just want to cycle back to Saturday's game and congratulate Rico and his team for the amazing effort they put forward. If you haven't watched his presser after the Sioux game, check it out on the NCHC page. He speaks very poignantly about the lessons the team learned from the incredible struggles they went through this year and how proud he was of them for digging down deep and getting to the championship game. I have so much respect for him and the Miami program. Then when they are down two goals with three minutes left on a night where DU had very effectively shut down their explosive and super talented forwards, they dug down deep one more time and threw everything they had at the DU net. HOLY C-R-A-P was that hard to watch!

I'm still in a state of shock that this team made it to MSP and then won two more elimination games and is headed to a regional. This is their first four game winning streak ALL YEAR! End of the day, I don't care what happens from here on out. Our prospects for next season have sky rocketed. All these young kids have just gotten so much more championship experience than any of us would've guessed and that equals more wins next year. Hats off to Monty and his staff for pulling this run off. Loved seeing Gwoz's text Saturday. Classy move. To the few of you who will be in Worcester, enjoy yourself and cheer as loud as you can for the boys!

Good post on Miami, and of course Gwoz is still the man. Very happy to see him doing so well, but it's still strange to not see him on the DU bench, walking across the ice at North Dakota, and all that good stuff.

Nice story on the 68 Frozen Four, Old Pio.

BC is of course a great team, but I can't imagine they are too psyched about having to play DU in the first round, with Brittain, a great defensive group who can score, and a suddenly resurgent forward group. Also--the announcers were complimenting Q Shore on his play during the NCHC tournament, but overall I think it was a relatively "quiet" performance from him, as he's probably still recovering from his injury. If Quentin can get close to 100%, yet another "resurgent" weapon for DU to use.

It all starts with Sam, though. I'm sure he will be happy to get away from that rink and the crazy boards that were behind him.
