Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Hey, it's not like Putin spent fifty gazillionteen dollars to host the Olympics, only to have his team eliminated from medal contention in the most highly anticipated event of the two week festival, while people in the gay bars in Sochi are raising mock toasts to him. Oh wait, it's exactly like that. :D

So Comrade Vlad, ya gonna root for the red, white and blue to win the gold?

He may be distracted by having his thugs kill demonstrators in Kiev.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I was about to say: roughing up, tasering and flogging a girl band in the name of "security" also takes up a lot of his time.

Vlad needs to loosen up a little. Frankly, I'd urge him to get together with The Flintstones, cuz, "when you're with The Flintstones, have a yabba dabba doo time, a dabba doo time, you'll have a GAY old time."

And seriously Vlad, in that scenario what's not to love?

:D

News from Bridgeport:
Getting Strome and Donovan back a big plus.
Scott Mayfield is a player who has been quietly consistent—he’s not a point producer like Donovan from the blue line, but he’s becoming a solid shutdown defenseman in the AHL. Given his size and ability, he’s going to get a look by the big club maybe as early as this season depending on what happens at the NHL trade deadline,” said Sound Tigers play-by-play man; Phil Giubileo

Mayfield stats 51GP 3 11 14 +8 and of course 80 penalty minutes 6'4" 205 still slim
Donovan Bridgeport stats 21GP 6 13 19 +6 only 19 penalty minutes 6'0" 202

Yeah, ya better not put Kevin Dineen in the D.U. Athletic Hall of Fame. I mean, the man doesn't even have a degree from the school. Some kinda transient hockey bum.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Speaking of the Olympics, here is an interview with DU Olympian Otto Tschudi. I am sure Old Pio will get a kick out of this. He skied in 2 Olympics; Grenoble in 1968 and Sapporo in 1972.

Thanks for posting that. Back in the Schaeffler* days, about the only time DU didn't win the NC$$ title was in Olympic years. One of my fondest memories is the time we went to the Dartmouth Winter Carnival and went through those delicate little east coast snowflakes like Attila the Hun. The Dartmouth student newspaper editorialized that DU should never be invited back. Because inviting the Pioneers to their precious little winter carnival was like inviting the Green Bay Packers to a touch football tournament!

The last time I saw Willy, he was setting the course for the women's slalom at Sapporo, won by Barbara Cochran of the US. Some guy named Killy was working the booth next to ours and we shut him up but good.

*In addition to honoring our hockey immortals, it's past time we do something significant to remember Willy.

I'm honestly a little surprised. This is about as boring and quiet a Gold Pan week as I can remember. Let's hope the games (and DU's play) aren't flat. Maybe a good crowd would help prevent that. I know I could use a boost of energy.

You know our friends in the athletic department will be doing everything in their power to drain the event of any excitement or intensity. For instance, we certainly wouldn't want to have the giant Boone in the stands. Jelly donut in the locker room of course, but no Boone in the stands. Our 3rd World students (most of whom wouldn't be caught dead at a sporting event) approve.

And remember a sellout means there may be as many as 4,350 people in the building.

Wouldn't be caught dead at a sporting event? But what about CC's power play featuring: Lonnie, Jugdish, Mohammed, Flounder and Neidermeyer [who, by the way, is a dead man]?

It's not the "3rd world students" that are the problem, it's the "first class" students who would rather be in the mountains or drinking downtown that are responsible for the lack of energy. Don't give the small minority of Boone detractors too much credit, here. I know how much we all love Boone, but c'mon, do you really think there are that many students out there saying "well, since we don't have Boone," or "since we have a jelly donut in the locker room," I'm not going to bother going to the game, not going to cheer, or whatever...?

It doesn't matter what goes on to try and stifle things, if the students show up and care, the otherwise unexciting manufactured environment is irrelevant. The atmosphere comes first and almost entirely from the crowd. Not the big screen, music, mascot, or logos.

And remember a sellout means there may be as many as 4,350 people in the building.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how full it actually is. Though to have no tickets for sale is a good sign at this point in the day.

The powers that be at any university, including ours, should be doing everything they can to improve the experience (and thus the attendance) at sporting events. If only from a P & L point of view. And the powers that be at DU chose to pander to a microscopic minority and sh*t can Boone. You can try to argue your way 'round that reality, but them's the facts. Of course DU students traditionally have other things to do on weekends, especially during ski season. But we're talking about a modest sized building here, not some giant football stadium. Students get the message about what's expected of them. Just as they did for a couple of decades when DU was the only DI school, with a college of music, that never played its fight song. And some of them will (and probably have) gotten the message about Boone, too. It's a matter of enthusiasm and expectations. We can do better is all I'm suggesting. And I would never describe school spirit as "unexciting and manufactured."
