Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Hey, guys (gals?), you can watch Saturday night's game online, streaming, freebie. It's a hi-def feed, too:

http://netnebraska.org/interactive-multimedia/sports/maverick-hockey-denver-vs-uno

Nebraska Public Television (NETV) televises several games per year, statewide, on it's network and also stream it on their web site as well. Saturday is one of those nights. This isn't a part of any television schedule you'll see here at USCHO, or, over on CHN. Here is the press release from UNO about this:

Saturday’s game will be televised statewide on NET1. Dave Ahlers will call the game, and former Maverick David Brisson will have the analysis. Both games also can be heard live on 1180 The Zone 2. Ahlers will have the play-by-play on Friday, and Frank Adkisson will call the game on Saturday. Terry Leahy will handle the analysis both nights and Lester St. James reports. Coverage begins 30 minutes before game time with the First National Bank Pre-Game Show. Streaming audio, video and live stats are available at OMavs.com.

Enjoy.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Unsolicited advice is generally pointless drivel which fails to offer any constructive suggestion. Nevertheless, as Denver readies itself to play Neb-O this weekend I'll offer one idea to the Pioneers. When hosting the Mavericks earlier this season Denver lost both games, in overtime, by identical 3-2 scores, on goals each night scored by Josh Archibald. This weekend late in each period and especially if the a game goes in to overtime the Denvers should give strong consideration to having their best defensive center or forward shadow Archibald when he's on the ice as he has proven to be lethal when the game is on the line. Only two players in division 1 have scored more than his 21 goals this season. My $.02.

Terry Leahy is an old friend who used to work for me in Omaha.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Terry Leahy is an old friend who used to work for me in Omaha.

I feel badly for him because he is the ONLY really competent radio broadcaster UNO has and he has to work with guys that aren't close to as knowledgeable as he. Play-by-play man Dave Ahlers is a nice guy, but he is also the school's Director of Media Relations and he is trying to serve two masters there (badly, I might add) and you don't want to know what I think of Lester St. James. Frank Adkisson is the former voice of both the Omaha Lancers and what was then the Omaha Royals (now, Stromchasers) and he is very good as well, but, he only does UNO games when they are on local TV--just a few times a year at most.

UNO let Greg Harrington go, the finest hockey announcer I've ever heard, 3 seasons ago because he lives in Minneapolis and they didn't want to pay the extra 30 grand or so it cost in extra travel expenses per season for him any more. This after him being the ONLY play-by-play man UNO had ever had up to that point. An absolutely disgusting reason, in my book.

Red Cows, Just noticed your tagline and I have a suggested change for this weekend:
UNO shoots! The Great Brittain Saves!

I agree with you ASaaG, Archibald needs to be held in check. Monpetit was also a pest at Magness, but Ryan Walters wasn't. And Walters was a hobey finalist the year before.

Speaking of the Hobey,
Vote for Sam Brittain for the Hobey!

du78 are you snowed in yet? Still have power? Even more sick and tired of snow and ice?
(BTW 84 degrees here in SoCal today; warmer tomorrow)

DU vs Duke will be available online ESPN3

Cancelled as reported by Lacrosse Magazine just now because of weather related problems. They think some free video stream will be made available. LM just published the entire year's college Lacrosse TV schedule if anyone is interested. You should be interested,:) for we might win a National Championship this year.

Very clever. Touche'.

You have cited the key to the weekend, too, methinks.

I have no place left to throw anymore snow. Picked up another 13+ inches yesterday and now have 24+ inches of standing snow in the yard. Yesterday was the seventh storm since January 1st and 10th of the season. Idiot newspaper guy threw this morning's paper in the middle of the front yard. When I went to get it, the snow was halfway up my thigh not including the snow under my boots. Made it to work today. :)
Luckily I didn't lose power but their have been scattered outages in the area. Finally broke down and bought a big generator last fall that can power most of my house so I am not worried about losing electric anymore. Unfortunately, my snow blower is in the repair shop but the neighbors with them helped out yesterday. More snow due tomorrow :(

I did get to watch Stats pot 2 goals for Team USA yesterday.

It is GAME DAY!!!!

DU Game Notes

DU INJURY REPORT...
• Freshman Brad Hawkinson is expected to miss the rest of the season and receive a medical redshirt due to an upper body injury suffered early in the season.
• Freshman Evan Cowley is out with a broken finger.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

It's time for weekend number two in Denver's Road Warriors or Roadkill Tour. Nebraska swept Denver in a pair of overtime games early in the season. Denver went 0-1-1 last weekend in Saint Cloud. My own thought is that another 0-1-1 this weekend would put the Pioneers perilously close to being unable to earn home ice for the first round of the NCHC tournament. Further, I think a minimum of three points is necessary if the Pioneers want to stay within striking distance of Western and NoDak--both of which have "seemingly" easy series this weekend. Good luck to the Pioneers this weekend.

I think DU really needs 4 to 6 points this weekend. Only 8 games left. I hope you are enjoying all the powder out there!

I agree that Denver needs four to six points this weekend. I hope the team can earn at least three. According to DU's team page on this site Denver is 4-3-5 on the road this season. Said in slightly different words, the Pioneers have played 12 road games this season and have won only 4 times, which makes me think 4-6 points this weekend is expecting too much from this squad. Neb-O swept Denver earlier this season. Frankly, I don't think this year's DU team is anything more than a run-of-the-mill squad destined to be dismissed early in the post-season conference tourney. I'm aware that Neb-O has allowed a number of goals in recent games, but the thought of Denver needing to score 4-5-6 goals to beat a team scares me. Entering the season I thought the team's forwards were ill-equipped to score goals and nothing the group has done has altered my opinion. I keep imagining a scenario in which NoDak finishes fourth in the conference and Denver fifth, meaning a trip to Grand Forks for the Pioneers in the first round of the NCHC tourney. Good luck to Denver if that happens.

The powder in Breck has been exeptionally good since January 1st and with half of February to go and all of March--Colorado's snowiest month of the year--this may be a memorable year for skiers. Breck's snowfall total for the season thus far is 304 inches with fifteen feet since January 1st. There's a possibility the resort may record only its third 500 inch seasonal total in fifty-four years of operation. My wife and I have arranged our work/vacation schedules so that we plan to ski twelve days in March and more in April if conditions warrant it.

It doesn't look like they'll have to do it in front of a large hostile crowd. Ticket sales for tonight and tomorrow night look pretty lackluster unless there is a big walk-up (the weather IS nice today for a change, though). 7,000-ish both nights, maybe?

If there are seven thousand people in the building either night that will represent more people IN THE BUILDING than is the case for any Denver home series excepting NoDak and CC. Denver announces "crowds" on the basis of tickets sold/distributed. The actual count of bodies in the building is never equivalent to tickets sold/distributed. As someone who's held season tickets for over forty years I know whereof I speak.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

We almost went to Nebraska for this weekend's contests. I've heard good things about their arena; and I guess the team hotel is attached right to the arena, so all you do is walk there, all indoors. But I checked and the Hilton-Omaha is not for the financially-challenged. It was like $260 per night. We've been on a couple trips, and we like to stay at the team hotels - and usually they're close to the rinks, but they're expensive and they fill up fast, since the visitor team books a block of rooms; and if there's other events going on that weekend, that fills them up. We had breakfast one time with Gwozdecky and some players in Minneapolis. I'm going to try to go to the Bronco's weekend in Michigan.

Good lord, where or how were you looking into booking a room there?

The Hilton attached to the Clink is 600+ room hotel. It's easily the largest hotel in the entire state of Nebraska. Maybe once or twice a season, Mrs. Red Cows and I will stay there just for the fun of it for a home series. We live at the polar opposite end of town from the Clink. We have never paid anywhere close to that number for a night there or we would never do this (at least, not there).

That's said, some gigantic girls volleyball thing (girls club volleyball in Nebraska would utterly shock you as to its scope and scale) is currently going on coincident to this series at the convention center portion of the Clink and maybe that's why you were quoted that ridiculous number.

I know you said you like to stay at the team hotel, but, their are NUMEROUS other options within walking distance of the Clink. With few exceptions, they would be less expensive than the Hilton, too, under any circumstances.

By the way, food and drink at the Hilton is overrated and overpriced. I'd personally avoid it unless you are looking for a martini or a scotch.

You want to see a hockey game in this arena, the countdown clock is ticking. The end of next season is the end there.
