All Things Denver XXXVII

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

On a far less serious note than choice of spectacles after sundown....it's almost time for game two of the Road Warriors or Roadkill Tour.

Denver plays seven of eight games on the road. There's a possible 21 points to be earned in that stretch. Having won the shootout last night the Pioneers picked up two points in the first game of the toughest part of their schedule. Denver has six more road games in this stretch [1@St.C., 2@Neb-O, 1@CC, 2@WMU]. If the Pioneers can split these six games that would give them a total of 11 points for the seven road games, slightly more than half the available 21 points. Frankly, earning ten or eleven points in this stretch would be a solid achievement and likely be enough to earn the team home ice for the first round of the NCHC tournament.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

With DU having only taken 2 points on the weekend and UNO beating UND on Saturday, DU sits tied in 5th with WMU. Not getting any points on Saturday against SCSU has knocked DU out right now for home ice for the playoffs. With 8 games left with 2 each against UNO (road), CC (home and road), WMU (road) and Miami (home), DU needs to go on a run to get back into a home playoff position. UND, UNO, UMD and SCSU are ahead of them in the standings and they only play UNO. That will be a critical series this coming weekend. It could make or break their chance for home ice. They are tied with WMU and need to put some space between them. CC and Miami are in the basement and DU can't afford to lose any points to them. DU really needs to run the table and I think the league will be in flux until the last game on the last weekend.

With DU at 23 in PWR, I doubt they will make the NCAAs without getting the autobid. Right now only SCSU and UMD are in the tourney at 8 and 14. If UMD falters they could be knocked down in the PWR. DU plays no one that is in the tourney as of right now so for them to jump up will be terribly difficult.

The team's current position in the conference doesn't surprise me. Putting all modesty in my back pocket for a moment, before the season began a buddy of mine asked me to give him my assessment as to how the Pioneers would do in the 2013-2014 season. This is what I wrote.

===>As for the Denvers...too many questions to know what the team will do this season. Scoring up front looks thin and the team lacks size among the forwards. Scoring on the blue line looks good, but other than Josiah Didier no size or 'stay-at-home' defensemen, and I think the defense may be vulnerable because of that. Questions in goal unless Brittain plays like he did as a freshman. My uneducated guess is that the team might be as good as two or three games over .500, but could as easily be four or five under .500. I'll go out on a limb and say the "up" side for the record is 17-15-4 and the "down" side is 14-18-4 based on the 36 game regular season schedule. I see Denver as a bottom-half-of-the-NCHC team. I'll be surprised if Denver makes the NCAA tournament.<===

As it stands now the range of 14 to 17 regular season wins makes me look prescient for one of the few times in my life.

Just got an e-mail from DU that both games will be webcast from UNO on Pio Vision this weekend.

"Prescient?" For cripes sake, remember who reads this: DU grads. Some of whom majored in FAC. Just remember the KISS principle, okay? ;)

Fits nicely on double wide letterhead. Or on rolls of butt wipe.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Hate to think of it, but DU/NoDak would likely draw the best of the options presented. Another option is to bring in a B1G school, The Michigans have massive alumni bases here in Denver.

r

How about North Dakota and Michigan? ;)

Old WCHA rivals, Minnesota or Wisconsin, might be a good draw.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

I heard about this on the news, and I right away thought that DU would jump on the bandwagon if it ever came to fruitation; or for sure the 'Cuts or Eagles. Heck, I'd like to see an outdoor marquee CC/DU matchup. The biggest hurdle has to be the sunshine that Denver gets, even in the dead of winter. Sunlight and ice rinks don't mix. And here, as the old adage goes, we're a mile closer to the sun. I think the ice conditions would be of grave concern, and deal breaker for the Avs.
