Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Did You Know...

Pioneer hockey players average 5' 11 1/4" in height--that is 57th out of 59.
Canisius College is the tallest team at a hair below 6' 1". Only the gophers and Ferris State have less personal altitude 5' 11 1/8" and 5' 11" respectively.

Pioneers average weight--185 lb 11.5 ounces--45 of 59. Notre Dame is the heaviest at 199.5 lbs. Heavy #2 Western Michigan averages 195 lbs 1oz. Quinnipiac is the lightest at around 170.

Our team's average age is 20.48 years--49 of 59. (Yes, we do have a lot of freshmen.) The oldest team is UAA at 22.04 years.
BC and Quinnipiac are the youngest at less than 20 years old..

Evan Cowley at 6' 4" is the tallest Pioneer and is the 5th youngest player in Division I Hockey, Wade Bennett at age 23 is the oldest Pio.

Sophomore Gabe Levin and Freshman Matt VanVoorhis top out at 5' 7". Levin is also the least weighty. On the other end of the scale, Sam Brittain, Grant Arnold, Josiah Didier and Larkin Jacobson weigh in at 216.

(Pioneer averages are effected by the inclusion of 2014 recruit Cody DePourcq--1995 birth year, 5' 5", 134 lbs. Cody is 4 months older than Evan Cowley.)

Amazing. I'd like to see similar data (including cholesterol count, BP and blood alcohol levels) for the fans. In the case of Sioux fans, we could include tooth counts.

I would think trying to find a denver fan would be the hardest part for this survey...

Matt Donovan with a goal last night in Isles 6-4 win over Preds.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Hey, How about those 4-1 University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds? Packing thier suitcases this weekend for a road trip to Colorado. You think they'll be a little fired up after just losing to an American team (Portland AHL)?? Don't blow it, CC! Send those guys to Magness with a fresh loss ! LOL Those guys could leave the US with 3 losses in a row.......if CC does thier job.

UNB needs to work on a few issues. In the game against Portland Coach MacDougall said that the V-Reds were "making one pass too many, too many times". This has been a common problem for UNB over the last few years - they've got enough skilled and overly unselfish guys that they'll keep passing the puck around looking for the perfect shot, or make a drop-pass on the rush. Drives you nuts at times.

Friday at home against Carleton, the Ravens took it too them early and the V-Reds beat a path to the penalty box, giving up two 5-on-3 power play goals in the first period. All were legitimately called reactionary penalties. They eventually hauled their heads out of their posteriors in the last half of the game for the come-back 3-2 win. After the game Coach talked about his team playing like they were "entitled" in the first period and not reacting well to being outworked, outhit and beat to the puck. I agree with his assessment, but that's why you play exhibition games, right?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Jason Zucker reassigned to Iowa.
Had a groin injury earlier in camp. Didn't have a great camp. Coach Yeo said he would be back in Minnie again.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Matt Donovan made Isles' 23-man roster. Mayfield sent to Bridgeport.

Beau Bennett sent to Wheeling of ECHL. Now before you all freak out, this was a cap move by the Pens and Beau should be back for the home opener. I doubt he even left Pittsburgh.

Look for Beau to play on the 2nd line with Malkin and Neal.

Freddy, How much Olympic-sized ice does UNB see usually? Of course this weekend they'll have big World Arena one night and Magness' NHL rink the next. Coupled with the altitude - you think it will be a factor?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Freddy, thanks for the updates on the V-Reds.

"making one pass too many. they keep passing the puck around looking for the perfect shot," Boy have we heard that a lot over the past couple of Years.

Hope we won't hear that refrain this year.

Acadia is the only school in UNB's conference with Olympic-sized ice, so they play two away games a season there, and usually do okay. The first time in Wolfville is often an adventure for the rookies, particularly the defencemen. Last year they opened their US weekend at UNH, and unfamiliarity with the wider ice certainly cost them for an early goal. UNB has three new starting defencemen this year, so they could have a rough start since this will be their first Olympic ice this season ...

The altitude may be a bigger issue, especially with the three games in three days. They play at sea level or near sea level out here in their home conference.
