Questions of the day:

When do we get a Captain?
Who will it be?
Who else will wear a letter?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Nick Shore got the 3rd star in the game last night against the AVs 1 goal 1 assist

Coming Attractions
Bozie and Colborne to play tonight on NHLN.
Donovan scheduled to be on the point for 2nd PP unit as Islanders take on Devils at the Barclay in Brooklyn. Game will be streamed only to New York.
Battle for Florida could see Shore and Carle, but no lineups yet.
Looks like Zucker and Bennett both have the night off.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Captain Makowski, Alternate Doremus?

Sam with an A also seems reasonable to me.

Could the 2 seniors be Co-Captains or can goalies be a Captain?
Could we have alternating "A"s to begin the season?

I never liked the co-captain option. Seemed like it was a way to smooth things over and not tee anybody off. Heck with that. Put some accountability behind the C. Make it 1 guy only. Oh btw.....UNB is already 3-0. They have 2 more upcoming games before they bury CC on the 5th.

I stopped by the Campus Lounge for a beer or two with a buddy last night. It's impossible for me to go there without thinking of Jimbo and smiling.

Oh btw.....UNB is already 3-0. They have 2 more upcoming games before they bury CC on the 5th.

UNB had their first two homes games of the preseason- the first-ever visit of the OUA's Windsor Lancers, who were upset by Waterloo in the playoffs and should have been at the University Cup in March.

The Friday game was close for two periods, but UNB's famous conditioning was the difference in the third period as they controlled the ice and added 3 goals to win 5-0. Saturday was a tighter game, as Windsor scored early in both the first and second periods and were up 3-1 (on 9 shots) when rookie goalie Joel Vienneau (he played behind USA Hockey star John Gibson in Kitchener last season) got the hook. UNB poured it on again in the third period, and scored three unanswered goals for the comeback 5-4 win. Interestingly the Windsor coach acknowledged the obvious (to us in Fredericton) in both postgames that his team needs to match UNB's off-ice conditioning comittment to be able to be at their level at the national championship.

The V-Reds travel to Portland, Maine for a Wednesday afternoon game against the AHL's Pirates and then are back home Friday to host the OUA's Carleton Ravens in another preseason game. The Ravens are big and play a bruising game, so it should be telling.

UNB has a number of new players due to veterans' graduations - they played three new defenceman in regular shifts (and they looked a bit shakey at time when under strong forecheck) and three rookie forwards (and a fourth on Saturday) in regular shifts. Both of their goalies are new, although the older Charles Lavigne formerly played at St. Thomas University before transferring across campus to UNB for his MBA and only played Senior league hockey last year.

Triskaidekaphobia factoid

The last Pioneer to wear #13 scored the game winning goal in the 2004 Frozen Four semi-final game.
Only to be suspended for the Championship game.

At the White House visit President George W. Bush even called out his name,
"Lukas Dora."

Dora was the 14th Pioneer skater to wear #13.

Welcome aboard! With a new coach and lots of players having left early for the pros, this team will be relying on a lot of young players. This year's team has 11 freshmen, 5 sophomores, 7 juniors and 2 seniors. The current senior class started out with 7 members with 3 having turned pro (Zucker, Bennett and Nick Shore) and two others having left for other reasons (J. Mermis and D. Olszewski). The current junior class started with 9 players with two having turned pro (Mayfield and Ulkinoura). The current sophomore class started with 6 players with Dakota Mermis having left midway through his freshman year to go to London in the OHL. The top returning players are seniors Sam Brittain (G), Daivid Makowski (D), juniors Joey LaLeggia (D), Ty Loney (F), Zac Larraza (F), Dan Doremus (F), Matt Tabrum (F) and sophomores Nolan Zajac (D) and Quentin Shore (F). Three of last years top 5 scorers graduated or left for the pros in Nick Shore, Chris Knowlton and Shawn Ostrow. They accounted for 89 points in scoring. The two returning top scorers are both defensemen in Joey LaLeggia and David Makowski. Ty Loney is the top scoring forward that is returning. The top incoming freshmen are goalie Evan Cowley, forwards Trevor Moore, Brad Hawkinson and defenseman Will Butcher. If DU is to make any noise this year, the returning players all need to have career years and the freshmen will have to contribute on a regular basis. With such a small senior class, the juniors and sophomores will have to have some leadership roles which normally fall to seniors. FYI, both goalies, Sam Brittain and Evan Cowley, are Florida Panther draft picks. DU has six NHL draft picks on this season's roster; Q. Shore, Butcher, LaLeggia, Larraza plus the two goalies.

Sounds like a bit of a rebuild, but those in the know must think we got some horses as we're tabbed for 4th in the toughest conference in the country. Stopped by the rink a few weeks ago after I got my kid moved into the dorms, and was fortunate to meet Coaches Montgomery and Miller while i was wandering around the place. Very friendly and happy to indulge a new fan...very impressive individuals and you could sense the fire inside Montgomery.

Welcome. I won't be able to help you with any of that stuff of course, but we're glad to have you.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Welcome jopio!

How cool that you got to meet @DUCoachMonty and "Killer" Miller in person. DU hockey fans have high expectations for their team, but it is safe to say, this year we don't really know what to expect. New coach, new conference, and lots of freshmen.

A couple of things remain the same:
1. CC Sucks
2. North Dakota, formerly known as the Fighting Sioux, and the Pioneers don't like each other.
:D :D
